Federal forces committed abuses in Amhara region, including kidnappings, massacres, sexual violence and attacks on humanitarian personnel, in an attempt to quell the Fano insurgency in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, the Guardian newspaper said in its photographic report.

It added that the situation is out of control, with more than 2 million people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance in a region that is also hosting refugees from the war in Sudan.

According to the Guardian newspaper in its photographic report, the Ethiopian federal army is regularly accused of massacres, arbitrary arrests, sexual violence and drone attacks targeting civilians in Amhara. #Somali defense minister, army chief travel to Egypt as #Cairo plans troop deployment in Somalia

Somalia’s Defense Minister, Ahmed Macalin Fiqi, accompanied by the country’s army chief, arrived in #Egypt on Monday for a previously unannounced visit aimed at strengthening strategic ties and regional security cooperation, government sources said.

The visit comes as Egypt prepares to deploy troops to Somalia to support the underfunded African Union mission, #AUSSOM, which faces logistical and financial challenges.

Egypt is currently engaged in a political dispute with Ethiopia over the Grand Renaissance Dam on the Nile, and analysts suggest the troop deployment may also be part of a broader strategy to counter Ethiopia’s regional influence while expanding Egypt’s military presence in the Horn of Africa.

“Focus of the trip is on strengthening military cooperation, training ...

#Ethiopia: President Tadesse says budget freeze leaves #Tigray unable to pay civil servants, banks short of cash, warns fragile peace at risk

Tigray Interim Admin (#TIA) President Lt. Gen. Tadesse Worede has warned that the region’s fragile post-Pretoria peace is under serious strain as a federal budget freeze has left the administration unable to pay civil servants or maintain essential services.

He said the economic pressure extends beyond unpaid salaries, with severe cash-flow shortages leaving banks “running out of cash” & preventing residents from accessing their own money, describing the measures as “absolutely unacceptable.”

Speaking at a mass gathering in #Aksum during the Hidar Zion celebrations on Sunday, President Tadesse said the delay in federal budget subsidy transfers has intensified existing pressures at a time when the administration is “making every effort to prevent a slide back into war.”
He noted that the budget subsidy has not been sent ....

#UN calls for unhindered humanitarian access in #Sudan as #RSF's violations persist

The UN has renewed its urgent call to all parties in Sudan to guarantee "safe, unhindered humanitarian access" for civilians and aid workers, as violations by paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue to drive massive displacement and rising needs.

"We once again call on all parties to urgently guarantee safe, unhindered humanitarian access to protect civilians, including, of course, aid workers," spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters on Monday.

He said UN humanitarian teams recently met displaced families who urgently require shelter, essential items, health services, and sanitation assistance.

While the UN is providing food and psychosocial support, Dujarric warned that "funding shortfalls have left critical gaps," stressing the vital need for donors to commit additional resources.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023, has already killed thousands of people, displaced at least 12 million and led to one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

#Sudan Offers #Russia Its First Naval Base in Africa

Red Sea port would give Moscow a vital edge in the strategic waters

Sudan’s military government has offered Russia what would be its first naval base in Africa and an unprecedented perch overlooking critical #Red_Sea trade routes, according to Sudanese officials.

The deal, if it happens, would be a strategic advantage for #Moscow, which has struggled to deepen its foothold on the continent. It would be a troubling development for the #US., which has sought to keep Russia and #China from controlling African ports where they could rearm and refit warships and, potentially, choke off vital sea lanes.

Under a 25-year proposal Sudan’s military government presented to Russian officials in October, Moscow would have the right to station up to 300 troops & dock as many as four warships—including nuclear-powered ones—at Port Sudan or another, yet-to-be-named Red Sea...

#Allied discovers five new targets at #Ethiopia gold project

Allied Gold said recent drilling at its #Kurmuk property in western Ethiopia has identified at least five new target areas, underpinning plans for a high-volume gold operation. The stock hit an all-time high.

Hole TSDD041 in the Tsenge–Hiccup Hill zone cut 16.4 metres grading 13 grams gold per tonne from 43 metres depth, while hole TSDD036 in the Tsenge–Setota zone cut 10.5 metres at 1.85 grams gold from 161 metres downhole, Allied said Thursday in a statement.

The company’s update highlights “the potential upside at the Kurmuk asset in terms of exploration,” National Bank Financial mining analyst Mohamed Sidibé said in a note. He called the drilling results “constructive.”

Allied Gold shares jumped 9.3% to C$29.47 Friday morning in #Toronto, their highest level since the stock began trading in September 2023. ....

#Eritrea, #Somalia and #Sudan are among African countries affected by US. Green Card review

The #United_States has announced a sweeping review of Green Cards issued to citizens of 19 countries—ten of them in Africa, among which are Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan—following the November 26 attack on National Guard troops in #Washington, D.C.

The Trump administration confirmed the move after authorities identified the detained suspect as a 29-year-old Afghan national who had previously worked with U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (#USCIS) Director Joseph Edlow said on X that President Trump had ordered a “rigorous re-examination of every Green Card for every alien from every country of concern,” adding that safeguarding Americans was “paramount” and blaming the previous administration for “reckless resettlement policies.”.....

#Policy_Brief: #Assab vs #Berbera: Weighing #Ethiopia’s legal, operational options for maritime access

Ethiopia’s renewed pursuit of sovereign access to the #Red_Sea has reignited tensions with #Eritrea, writes Gulaid Yusuf Idaan. He contends that Ethiopia’s loss of coastal access remains legally ambiguous, citing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s recent remark that “there is no official record or institutional decision” documenting Ethiopia’s maritime loss, rendering Ethiopia’s claims grounded more in historical narrative than in enforceable international law.

Given these legal constraints and the operational risks, Idaan argues that the MoU with #Somaliland enables access without violating state borders or provoking conflict.

Ethiopia has launched its fourth National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (#AMR), reaffirming its commitment to tackling a growing global health threat, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (#Africa CDC).

#Trump says he doesn’t want #Somalis in the US, urges them to go back to their homeland and fix it

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he did not want Somali immigrants in the U.S., saying residents of the war-ravaged eastern African country are too reliant on U.S. social safety net and add little to the United States.

Trump’s contemptuous denoscription of the entire immigrant community is the latest example of him pointedly attacking the Somali diaspora in the United States. Somalis have been coming to Minnesota and other states, often as refugees, since the 1990s. The president made no distinction between citizens and non-citizens.

The president’s comment came days after his administration announced it is halting all asylum decisions following the shooting of two National Guard soldiers in Washington. The suspect in last week’s incident is originally from Afghanistan but Trump has used the moment to ...

Civil Aviation Authority of #Bangladesh clarifies baggage theft claims of out-pass returnees

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (#CAAB) and airline officials have clarified that alleged missing items from the baggage of out-pass returnees arriving from #Saudi_Arabia stem from consolidation and handling procedures abroad, not from airport staff or airline misconduct in #Dhaka.

According to a CAAB media note issued today, 78 Bangladeshi nationals arrived in Dhaka on 14 November aboard #Ethiopian Airlines after being repatriated by Saudi immigration authorities via Addis Ababa.

After completing immigration and official procedures at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, the passengers collected their baggage from Arrival Belt No. 1, where they found several bags cut open with contents missing, leading to confrontation with airline staff.

CAAB said the affected passengers had been detained in Saudi Arabia for various reasons, and their belongings were handled ...
