#Policy_Brief: #Assab vs #Berbera: Weighing #Ethiopia’s legal, operational options for maritime access
Ethiopia’s renewed pursuit of sovereign access to the #Red_Sea has reignited tensions with #Eritrea, writes Gulaid Yusuf Idaan. He contends that Ethiopia’s loss of coastal access remains legally ambiguous, citing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s recent remark that “there is no official record or institutional decision” documenting Ethiopia’s maritime loss, rendering Ethiopia’s claims grounded more in historical narrative than in enforceable international law.
Given these legal constraints and the operational risks, Idaan argues that the MoU with #Somaliland enables access without violating state borders or provoking conflict.
Click the link below to read the full article and examine the author’s perspective on the most viable, lawful, and peaceful option for Ethiopia to regain its maritime access.

The #South_Ethiopia Regional State Health Bureau, where the outbreak was detected, also announced that two young people who had been under medical follow-up after contracting the virus have recovered and been discharged.
Endashaw Shibru, Head of the Regional Health Bureau, said the two had previously been in contact with their father, who died after being infected with the Marburg virus. “They showed symptoms of the disease, were tested in the laboratory, and once confirmed positive, underwent medical follow-up,” he stated.

#Ethiopia launches fourth national plan to combat antimicrobial resistance
Ethiopia has launched its fourth National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (#AMR), reaffirming its commitment to tackling a growing global health threat, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (#Africa CDC).
The plan positions Ethiopia among African countries with structured strategies to address AMR, which occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites evolve to resist medicines designed to eliminate them.
The initiative is supported by Africa CDC, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the World Bank, and the East, Central & Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC).

#Ethiopia: OFC squeezed into fielding just ten candidates to escape deregistration ahead of mandatory deadline
The #Oromo Federalist Congress (#OFC) has been pressed into registering only ten candidates for the 7th national election to avoid deregistration under Ethiopia’s electoral law, as the National Election Board’s deadline for candidate submissions expired on today 2 December 2025.

#Trump says he doesn’t want #Somalis in the US, urges them to go back to their homeland and fix it
President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he did not want Somali immigrants in the U.S., saying residents of the war-ravaged eastern African country are too reliant on U.S. social safety net and add little to the United States.
Trump’s contemptuous denoscription of the entire immigrant community is the latest example of him pointedly attacking the Somali diaspora in the United States. Somalis have been coming to Minnesota and other states, often as refugees, since the 1990s. The president made no distinction between citizens and non-citizens.
The president’s comment came days after his administration announced it is halting all asylum decisions following the shooting of two National Guard soldiers in Washington. The suspect in last week’s incident is originally from Afghanistan but Trump has used the moment to ...

#Commentary: From Governance to Accountability: Roadmap to avert #Tigray’s crisis
In this commentary, Donek Zemo argues that Tigray faces an existential crisis stemming from war, siege, and political instability.
Despite widespread despair, she highlights that many continue to envision a future grounded in “stability, dignity, and self-governance.” Realizing this vision, however, depends on “constructing a credible system of governance capable of delivering services, managing divisions, and earning public trust.” Donek further contends that survival hinges not on military power but on “accountable governance.”
Click the link below to read the full article and explore the author’s proposed “tested accountability framework,” a model that integrates hierarchical, legal, and professional accountability, alongside robust citizen oversight, to help Tigray restore order, protect rights, empower capable leaders, and secure a legitimate path forward.

'The only solution is to leave': #Ethiopians driven into exile by poverty and insecurity
Numerous Ethiopians have been taking the northern route every year toward #Europe via #Sudan and #Libya. Growing poverty and regional conflicts have been sapping the country for years, driving many young people to leave in search of safety and opportunity.
It’s a violent image that has become all too common. Salih Suleiman, excruciatingly thin and crouching, begs throughout the video: "Save me", "I’m dying of hunger, please", "send money". The 27-year-old, detained in Libya along the migratory route that leads to Europe, gets beaten with a stick after each of his pleas. His persecutors are demanding a payment of 1.4 million birrs [the Ethiopian currency, equal to 7,900 euros] in exchange for his freedom.
The video of the former teacher from the University of Raya in the #Tigray region has become viral. Yet it is not rare: similar images of migrants being ....

The decision was published in the German Federal Gazette (Bundesanzeiger) on 1 December 2025, representing a major milestone in bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
