PIETER KRIEL: POLITICAL FREEDOM WITHOUT ECONOMIC POWER IS A SCAM

In this clip, author and activist Pieter Kriel describes South Africa’s democracy as a ceasefire rather than a peace, and he is not mistaken.

Despite Black South Africans holding political power since 1994, they have remained systematically locked out of the country’s white-controlled economic engine.

The African National Congress (ANC), the party that led the way to South Africa’s independence from white rule, ascended to power with promises based on the Freedom Charter, which called for land reform and equal rights. However, under pressure from foreign actors, including the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, the ANC government welcomed free trade and privatisation. It also introduced a ‘willing buyer, willing seller’ policy that restricted land reform.

Continued……As of 2022, white settlers owned 72 per cent of private agricultural land, and according to the World Bank, South Africa is the world’s most unequal country. Just as Kriel explains, Black townships are still crowded, schools are underfinanced, and youth unemployment stands at 45.5 per cent, based on a 2024 report done by the Department of Statistics South Africa. Meanwhile, predominantly white suburbs are retrofitted with electric fences as hunger drives protests amongst working-class communities.

Throughout the continent, liberation movements have taken control only to discover that they inherited colonial economies built to extract, not develop. From Nigeria’s oil wealth, which has not benefited most Nigerians, to Kenya’s colonial land grabbing, most postcolonial African states remain in economic bondage.

Until Africans reclaim land, labour, and capital, any claim of freedom is token.

Ghana’s economy appears to be on the mend, with the latest economic data showing cooling inflation and a national currency steadily gaining value.

Under President John Dramani Mahama, who was inaugurated for a second term in January, the gold-rich West African state is implementing a range of fiscal reforms to balance its budget after years of dependency on bailouts from neo-colonial institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank.

Swipe on for details on Mahama’s bold policies to revive Ghana - including establishing diplomatic relations with the neighbouring Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

A regional African economic and security bloc has blocked Rwanda from assuming the rotating chairmanship - prompting Kigali to quit in protest. The Economic Community of Central African States’ decision is seen as punishment for Rwanda’s role in the conflict in eastern DR Congo, with mounting evidence pointing to Kigali using proxies such as the M23 rebel group to destabilise the region and secure its Western backers’ resource interests. But the Rwandan side sees it as a sign the bloc is no longer credible. Swipe through for a breakdown of the key facts.

STUNNING: POLICE SHOOT WOMAN DURING LOS ANGELES UPRISING

A US police officer was caught on camera shooting a woman in Los Angeles at close range during a days-long uprising against US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in migrant communities.

Police shot rubber-coated bullets, which has maimed and k*lled people in the past. However, no information is available on the shot woman.

Citizen journalist Alexandria Alott, who had been documenting events in the city following days of widespread protests and state-inflicted violence, filmed the 10 June incident.

More than 33 per cent of people in the Los Angeles metropolitan area were born outside the United States, according to the US-based think tank Vera Institute. While US President Donald Trump hasn’t deported the most migrants amongst US presidents, his rhetoric has sparked dread in their neighbourhoods.
🤬12
Continued……We are clear US presidents’ long-standing hostility toward migrants ignores the role of colonisation and imperialism in creating the conditions often blamed on newcomers.

For example, Mexican migrants are victims of centuries of territorial expansion and capitalist exploitation. The US-brokered North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Canada and Mexico, which came into effect in 1994, displaced 4.9 million Mexican family farmers between 1991 and 2007, according to US-based progressive think tank Center for Economic and Policy Research (@cepr_org on X). The agreement forced 20.5 million more Mexicans to live below the poverty line, as of 2014. It is then no surprise that Mexican immigration into the US spiked by 79 per cent between 1994 and 2000.

Like Mexicans and other groups, some have blamed Haitian migrants for crimes, a claim that obscures the long history of US crimes against Haiti, including three military occupations and looting the country’s gold. Now, about 252,000 Haitian migrants risk losing their Temporary Protected Status on 3 August, a designation that had allowed them to remain in the US amidst the Western-instigated violence riddling the world’s first Black republic.

We condemn politicians conflating migration with crimes, while other politicians stand by and wring their hands, claiming to be victims of right-wing machinations.

GLOBAL MARCH TO GAZA KICKS OFF

In the shadow of what UN experts have called ‘g*nocide,’ a global movement is rising to stop Israel’s bombardments and escalated siege of Gaza.

Israel has sealed Gaza’s borders, blocked aid and flattened the majority of the strip. Yet, activists worldwide are preparing for what may be one of the boldest solidarity actions in recent memory: The Global March to Gaza to demand an end to the siege.

More than 2,000 people from 54 countries and 150 NGOs have pledged to march June 12-15 near the border crossing.

Among the participants is Nelson Mandela's grandson and South African politician Nkosi Zwelivelile (@nkosizwelivelile on IG), who in a video that @africa4palestine posted on 12 June, reported that the demonstrators had been stopped at a checkpoint one hour outside Cairo, with Egyptian authorities confiscating their passports.

Continued…….. African Stream got to interview Saif Abu Keshek, a member of the International Coordination Committee for the Global March to Gaza and chairman of the Global Coalition Against the Occupation of Palestine. He’s helping organise the protest heading toward Rafah, Egypt, the only border crossing Israel doesn’t control.

The march comes as the situation in Gaza reaches a breaking point. Israel's Western-backed military onslaught has k*lled over 62,000 Palestinians and injured more than 120,000, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. However, the Lancet medical journal reported in July 2024 that as many as 186,000 had been k*lled. Further, Israel has bombed hospitals, schools, food convoys and refugee camps. More than 2 million people are now displaced.

The march is a call to reclaim moral clarity in a world drowning in complicity.

BUSTING MYTHS ABOUT BLACK FATHERS

Happy Father's Day!

Whether it's right-wing politicians, the media, or structural racism in the United States, the stereotype of the absent Black father, perpetuated for decades, is simply a lie! This myth remains pervasive despite numerous studies debunking it. That includes a 2011 Pew Research Center study that found Black fathers are among the most active in their children's lives, even when not living with their children.

In this video, journalist Salifu Mack sets the facts straight about Black fathers in the United States today.
