Project Context

The project is part of the HARNESS MSCA Doctoral Network and explores digital identity, privacy, and data governance. The focus lies on the ethical and political implications of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) and its compatibility with EU digital policy, particularly European Data Spaces. The candidate will conduct conceptual analysis, foresight methodology, and anticipatory ethical framework development.



Doctoral Research Objectives
1. Analyze differing concepts of SSI (EU policy, academia, tech industry, activism)
2. Investigate political/moral theories behind SSI (e.g., libertarian, kantian, republican)
3. Conduct foresight analysis on technological trends and risks to SSI
4. Assess compatibility between SSI and data sovereignty frameworks
5. Build a normative framework to resolve tensions between personal and political data control

Possible Secondments:
Rathenau Institute (NL) – Societal impact (remote, 3 months)
Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) – FAIR data processing ethics (6 months)
