🇧🇦 Bosnia (#Bosna) written in Arebica using the Diwani Jali noscript

Arebica is a writing system that was used by Bosniaks between the 15th and early 20th centuries, until the Latin noscript was imposed during Austro-Hungarian rule. It modified Arabic letters to represent sounds that Arabic does not have.

Diwani Jali is a highly ornamental, ceremonial style of Arabic calligraphy that developed in the Ottoman Empire.

I combined these two to create this piece. Any mistakes or inaccuracies are due to my lack of skill or incomplete knowledge of either subject.

🇧🇦🇭🇷 This morning, the Croatian police (Donji Lapac Border Police Station) illegally transferred ten migrants from Egypt into Bosnia and Herzegovina. Most of the migrants had previously been beaten, and they were pushed into BiH without shoes or proper clothing. This is a continuation of the Croatian police’s pushback policy, under which the majority of migrants found on the territory of the Republic of Croatia are illegally transferred to Bosnia and Herzegovina without following the regular readmission procedure.

The moment when Golden Lily (Highest military decoration of the ARBiH) recipient Nijaz Malkoč destroyed a Serb tank

"From the direction of Šturlić toward Cazin, a column of M-84 tanks of the SAO Krajina Army launched an attack. Our fighters withdrew to the Fajić Hill area. Reinforcements arrived in the form of a recoilless gun crew from the MPOAD unit, led by Nijaz Malkoč from the village of Jezero. Nijaz and his comrades prepared the gun and hit the enemy tank, stopping the attack. During this action, he was severely wounded."

Amir Hasanović: FROM MY WAR DIARY (1993 – UNDER SIEGE) 10.02.1993 – Gornji Vukšić – Martinovići

"After 24 hours of rest, we are back in combat operations. After our forces took control of Gornji Vukšić and Martinovići, the Chetniks launched extensive operations to retake these places and seize our defensive lines. At 11 a.m., we repelled a strong combined armored-infantry attack. In trenches 12 and 13, our defensive line was almost breached. We reinforced the right flank of the line and, while inflicting losses on the Chetniks, managed to push them back.
On two lightly passable routes, we have two RPGs and a recoilless rifle with two shells. Aside from anti-armor weapons, we lack all other types of small arms.
At 1 p.m., the Chetniks launched another strong counterattack. First, they shelled us with large-caliber artillery, and then, under heavy barrage fire from 120 mm and 82 mm mortars, they launched a fierce attack. At the very start of the assault, Fikret Šabić and a young man from the 108th Brigade were hit in the shoulder. We conserve ammunition by letting the Chetniks get as close to our defensive line as possible.
On the left side, Hamza’s machine gun keeps firing continuously, which encourages us because we know the left flank still holds.
The enemy tank constantly shells us, trying to prevent our defense as their infantry approaches our trenches.
The attack lasted almost two full hours. Down in front of us, across the road, lie 6–7 dead Chetniks, whom they are trying by all means to retrieve. They are retreating back toward the small forest ahead of us. The tank fires on our trenches again.
It is terribly cold. The wind practically freezes the face and fingers.
In the trench, they brought in two of our men who were killed, right next to us. It is already past 3 p.m., and it is even colder.
I thought I would write this down when I get back to the barracks, but I am not sure… only Allah knows. Even though my fingers are freezing, I took the time to record this day.
One of the fallen is an older man, big with a mustache. He was hit by shrapnel in the head.
The other is very young, with beautiful smooth brown wavy hair. Completely pale, with a smile on his lips, as if he were sleeping. He was hit in the heart and shoulder. They say he was dead on the spot.
In the whiteness of the snow, his face looks so calm and serene.
My fingers are freezing, but I chose to write this down precisely for them.
To remember them, so I do not forget. Neither them nor the large pool of blood that seeped from the stretcher onto the white snow. I write this because tomorrow there may be no one left to record it for us.
And perhaps someone will read it and know what kind of heroes once walked through Bosnia…"

No Salvation on the Iron Cross - Halim Malkoč
On 8 February 1947, in Bihać, the life of Halim Malkoč ended before a firing squad of the new communist authorities. Born in Bihać and trained as an officer of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Malkoč later emerged as a key figure within the 13th SS Division Handžar. He did not view cooperation with Nazi Germany as ideological devotion, but rather as a calculated step he believed was necessary to safeguard the lives of Muslims in eastern Bosnia.

While the division was undergoing training in southern France, a rebellion erupted among Bosniak recruits led by Ferid Džanić. Many of them had come to believe they had been deceived - that instead of defending their homeland, they were being prepared as cannon fodder for deployment to the Eastern Front. The rebels sought to join the French Resistance and turn their weapons against the Germans.
Malkoč faced a defining choice: join the uprising or remain loyal to the chain of command. He chose order over revolt.

Drawing on his authority as both officer and imam, he persuaded part of the unit to stand down and suppress the rebellion. The uprising was crushed, and in the brutal reprisals that followed, around 150 Muslim soldiers were executed by the Germans. Džanić was killed during the fighting.

For his loyalty, Malkoč became the only Bosniak awarded the Iron Cross First Class, reportedly presented to him by Heinrich Himmler.
As Germany’s position collapsed later in the war, mass desertions followed. Many soldiers defected to the Partisans. Malkoč, bound by his oath and marked by the Iron Cross, remained loyal to the end. In May 1945, he retreated toward Austria, hoping to surrender to the Western Allies. Instead, he was captured at Bleiburg and returned to Yugoslavia, where he was treated as a high-value prisoner and a symbol of collaboration.

In the end, his people survived the horrors of the Second World War and the horrors that followed afterwards. The difference was that later generations placed their trust in themselves rather than in foreign powers.
