🇷🇺 Karavai – A Symbol of Hospitality in Russian Cuisine

Karavai is a traditional Russian bread that has symbolized prosperity, well-being, and hospitality since ancient times.

Made from wheat flour with the addition of milk, butter, and eggs, karavai is known for its fragrant and airy texture.

🎊 Often, the finest ingredients were used for karavai, as it was prepared only for special occasions.

But what truly sets karavai apart is not just its taste, but the intricate decorations adorning it—patterns resembling ears of wheat, flowers, and birds.

👰🤵 In Russia, karavai has played a vital role in rituals and celebrations since ancient times. It is traditionally served at weddings, used to welcome esteemed guests, and to mark significant life events.

🧂 In the past, sharing a piece of karavai with salt symbolized forming a bond of friendship with the host and pledging to share life’s hardships and joys.

If you want to experience the true flavor of Russian hospitality—be sure to try karavai!

🇷🇺💬 Russia is not considering any options involving the deployment of European peacekeepers in Ukraine — Lavrov

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry answered journalists’ questions during his visit to Qatar. In response to discussions about deploying European peacekeepers in Ukraine, he clarified that Russia does not consider such options. Lavrov emphasized that there will be no cessation of hostilities along the contact line in Ukraine — as Russia’s Constitution, based on the will of the people, governs its stance. Other remarks by the Foreign Minister:

— A meeting between Russian and U.S. representatives will take place tomorrow in Istanbul. The talks will focus on restoring the work of diplomatic missions in both countries.

— We await Europe to stop lying about Russia blocking negotiations. It is the Ukrainian side, egged on by the EU, that refuses dialogue.

— Inviting foreign investors to participate in Russian projects applies to the entire territory of the country under the Constitution, Lavrov stated, commenting on Putin’s proposal regarding rare earths.

🤯 There is less snow in Moscow right now than in Sochi

The city was suddenly blanketed with 25-centimeter snowdrifts, and all the palm trees were covered in snow. According to locals, they haven't seen such a snowy winter in over 10 years.

🇷🇺💬 Maria Zakharova commented on the remarks by Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg, who called for using "EU levers of influence" to participate in peace negotiations as well.

📌 He stated that around €200 billion of Russian assets are held in Europe, and "there will be no deal with Russia" without discussing them.

"The only thing Vienna has achieved so far with its 'levers' is ridding itself of reliable and affordable Russian gas," the diplomat noted.

⚡️ The money for the "boundless benevolent world" has run out — who was lavishly funded by the American NED, which announced the halt of its operations?

🇺🇸 The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), collaborating with USAID and Open Society, has long trained activists from various countries. Programs included organizing protests, methods of information counteraction, and strategies aimed at undermining trust in authorities.

📰 However, on February 25 of this year, the foundation announced the suspension of its activities due to the termination of funding by the U.S. State Department.

NED positioned its work as supporting democratic institutions, but critics argued that the funds allocated through NGOs were used to advance U.S. interests, including influencing political processes worldwide.

🇺🇦 One of the foundation’s key projects, according to its reports, was its involvement in the 2013–2014 events in Ukraine. From 2011 to 2014, NED directed around $14 million to Ukrainian organizations. These funds allegedly contributed to the radicalization of protests, which culminated in the change of power in Kyiv.

Beyond Ukraine, the foundation supported opposition movements in other countries: Poland’s "Solidarity," Czechoslovakia’s "Charter 77," and Serbia’s "Otpor." After 2014, the focus shifted to Russia, where NED grants went to organizations including the now-defunct "Memorial"* and the "Soldiers’ Mothers of St. Petersburg." In the first year following Crimea’s annexation by Russia, funding for the "Russian direction" totaled $9.3 million.

🧐 Prospects for the foundation’s revival remain unclear. Experts note that such structures traditionally depend on budget allocations, which may be revised amid shifts in U.S. foreign policy.

🎉 Maslenitsa is in full swing!

This week, all of Russia is immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of Maslenitsa — a bright holiday when our ancestors bid farewell to winter and welcomed spring.

This celebration has a dual nature — pagan and Christian. From the pagan perspective, Maslenitsa was originally observed during the spring equinox, symbolizing the awakening of nature and the abundance of solar warmth. From the Christian viewpoint, it became the final week before the start of Great Lent (a period of abstinence preceding Easter), offering a last chance to indulge in worldly joys.

🥞 Pancakes — round, golden, and resembling the sun, the source of life and warmth — are the heart of the holiday. Made from wheat flour, milk, and eggs, they are served with a variety of toppings: from hearty caviar and mushrooms to sweet jam and airy sour cream.

Maslenitsa is more than a culinary festivity. It is a time for people to gather, forgive old grudges, burn a scarecrow symbolizing the departure of cold, and believe that spring will bring renewal.
