The two-day BRICS summit opens today in Rio de Janeiro. On this occasion, more than 30 delegations have arrived in Brazil – representing not only the member countries of the bloc but also partner countries, as well as several guests invited by Brazil as the current chair.

The event is being held in such a broad format for the first time, as the partner country status for nations wishing to actively cooperate with BRICS was only recently established – following the summit held in Kazan in 2024. Belarus, Bolivia, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan are currently acting in this capacity.

🇷🇺 The Russian delegation is headed by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. President Vladimir Putin will participate in the plenary session via video conference. Due to Brazil not providing security guarantees for Putin at the BRICS summit, it was not officially guaranteed that the arrest warrant for the Russian president issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) would not be executed. The ICC in The Hague issued the warrant in March 2023.
