The meeting began after a reception in honor of the heads of delegations attending the summit, as well as guests invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"Very glad to see you and have an opportunity to talk on the margins of today's and tomorrow's event. It has been a long time since we have seen each other, we have accumulated a lot of issues of all kinds, bilateral, regional, international. I hope our today's meeting with you <...> will be useful and informative," Putin said.

The events are taking place at the Meijiang International Convention and Exhibition Center in China's Tianjin.

While expressing Russia's position on the Ukrainian issue at the summit, the Russian leader pointed out that the conflict occurred "not as a result of Russia's attack on Ukraine."

He named the actions of Western elites as the main cause.

Putin recalled that the 2014 coup d'état in Kyiv was provoked by the West, which persistently attempted to "drag Ukraine into NATO."

The Russian side had emphasized for many years that such a policy posed a direct threat to its national security, the President also stated. According to Putin, the coup resulted in the removal of Ukrainian leaders who were opposed to the country joining the alliance.
