The holiday coincides with the birthday of Rasul Gamzatov, a Soviet poet, prose writer, publicist, public and political figure, and translator.

Russia boasts a diversity of peoples living within its territory and a vast number of languages they speak. The 193 ethnic groups residing in Russia use approximately 277 languages.

Meanwhile, 105 languages are used in the state education system, of which 24 are used as the language of instruction and 81 are taught as a subject.

Interestingly, the number of languages does not match the number of ethnic groups. This fact is explained by some peoples having two officially recognized languages.
