At this point, it's widely understood that Benjamin Netanyahu helped to support the rise of Hamas. “Anyone who wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support bolstering Hamas,” Netanyahu said in 2019.

But there is less discussion about how US foreign policy set the stage for the events of October 7, 2023.

In an article published in 2006, we suggested that one way to understand the Bush administration's otherwise incomprehensible decisions in Iraq was to assume that they were not trying to suppress jihadism, but to foster it.

At the time, the text was received as imaginative speculation—but 17 years later, it looks prescient. It foretold the rise of the Islamic State in Iraq, predicted the extension of the label “terrorist” to ordinary activists in the United States, and foresaw how the situation in Palestine foreshadowed other ethnic conflicts and forms of mass repression.

On the Republican Party, though it could just as easily be said of Netanyahu:

"By a process of natural selection, they have come to pursue policies that tend to get their supporters shot down, blown up, and kidnapped, because these unfortunate effects drive more supporters into their arms."

On the platform previously known as Twitter, Elon Musk has apparently given orders to automatically remove those who follow the account of Palestine Action US (@Pal_ActionUS). Many people have reported that after following that account, their accounts automatically unfollow it. We can confirm this ourselves.

Whatever your politics in regard to Palestine, this is an important precedent. It confirms that Elon Musk bought Twitter in order to make it impossible for people to communicate except in ways that align with his personal agenda as a billionaire and racist.

Relying on X/Twitter to communicate means enabling Elon Musk to personally determine whom we can hear and whom is silenced.

A court in Rome has denied the request to release the anarchist political prisoner Alfredo Cospito from solitary confinement under the cruel “41bis” regime. Starting a year ago, Alfredo undertook a life-threatening four-month hunger strike demanding to be transferred. This coincided with solidarity actions throughout Italy and around the world.

Even Alfredo's worst enemies, officials from the anti-terrorism departments, recommended his transfer. But the court is determined to impose as much suffering as possible.
