Australian GP - Wing Thursday!

🔴 Ferrari going all-in on the 4 DRS zones: their upper plane is the most loaded among the top teams!➡️Should aid with quali perfo and tire wear but might make them easy to attack in the race.💡

🟠 McL's is much less loaded.
⚫️ Merc is in between the 2.
🔵 RBR: shallower, but full-width, lower plane.

Fascinating choices! 🔥

AUSTRALIAN GP - FP2 DATA 📊

1) SECTORS:
🔴 LEC was quick everywhere, already demolishing 🔵 VER's 2023 pole (0.293s quicker).
TSU, DOO, PIA got the fastest sectors, however!

2) TOP SPEEDS:
Minimal drag for 🟣Alpine (and 🔵RBR).
Mercedes and Williams ran draggy wings and didn't turn up the PU to compensate.

3) 🔴LEC vs 🟠PIA:
Were head-to-head until the last corner, where LEC gained 1 tenth through a 6km/h-higher minimum speed!

Everyone expects McL to be quick, but Ferrari should be a threat, too. 💡

We're in for a fascinating Australian GP!

AUSTRALIAN GP - FP2: LONG RUNS

🟡Mediums (s/lap)
1 )🟧NOR Fastest
2) 🟧PIA +0.161
3) 🟥LEC +0.219
4) 🟦VER +0.275
5) 🟥HAM +0.307

Mercedes, onHards, matched McL! Either the Hards are a superior racing tyre, or Mercedes will be quick.

Excellent Ferrari deg: look at their laptime progression!

Race will be likely wet, but in the dry, at least 3 teams look competitive.

This season start is:

- A nightmare for Ferrari;
- A dream for Williams (and sweet ‘vengeance’ for SAI);
- A continuation of ‘24 for McL, but without their opponent;
- Positive for RUS;
- Yet another proof that VER makes the difference.

Ferrari’s top speed was the same as McLaren’s, and their performance in the fast corners was no better.

This means that they didn’t sacrifice quali performance due to a rain-focused setup.

(Track is unrepresentative and this is just Quali.)

Australian GP - Qualifying

Strengths and Weaknesses (Best Laps)

Has Ferrari made a gamble?
Top Speed↔️Drag
Min. Speed @ T9/10↔️Downforce

🟠McL's high drag was worth the gain in downforce
🔵RBR had the lowest drag AND solid downforce
🟢Mercedes lacked downforce
🔴Ferrari was draggy yet still lost in cornering/traction to McL

LEC: "We must have lost a bit of performance. It's the right thing to do for this weekend, but I don't want to go into details" ➡️Wet-focused setup?

Likely not in terms of downforce (Ferrari had the most loaded wing, yet its high-speed cornering was not better than McL's or Red Bull's).

He could be referring to the suspension setup instead. This would explain:
- The sudden lack of pace;
- Their cornering performance deficit despite the loaded wing.

Scuderia Ferrari could be screwed, or could have made the right gamble: the race will tell!

What’s your prediction for the race? 🤔

AUSTRALIAN GP - QUALIFYING
LAPTIME IMPROVEMENT

Alpine (-1.637s) and Williams (-1.393s) gained the most.

McLaren (-1.219s) and Mercedes (-1.178s) improved significantly over their decent '24 performance!

Red Bull, Ferrari, and Aston failed to take a big leap: only 4 tenths gained (losing 8 to McL).

AUSTRALIAN GP - RACE PACE ANALYSIS

1)🟠McL (NOR)
2)🔵RBR (VER) +0.63s/lap
3)🟢Merc (RUS) +1.29s/lap
4)🔴Ferrari (LEC) +1.79s/lap
5)🔵Williams (ALB) +1.86s/lap

Strategy:
- Allowed VER to battle with NOR, although McL's pace was out of reach.
- Made Ferrari fall behind ALB/ANT/STR/HUL

2024:
1) Ferrari‼️
2) McL
3) RBR (VER out)
4) Aston❗️
5) Merc❗️

AUSTRALIAN GP - RACE PACE ANALYSIS 1)🟠McL (NOR) 2)🔵RBR (VER) +0.63s/lap 3)🟢Merc (RUS) +1.29s/lap 4)🔴Ferrari (LEC) +1.79s/lap 5)🔵Williams (ALB) +1.86s/lap Strategy: - Allowed VER to battle with NOR, although McL's pace was out of reach. - Made Ferrari fall…
My take:
- McL has built a rocketship.
- Improvement by Williams, RacingBulls, Sauber, Alpine.
- Per Sky Italy, LEC's comment ("We must have lost a bit of performance. It's the right thing to do for this weekend, but I don't want to go into details") referred to raising the car to keep the plank wear to legal levels, and NOT a wet setup. This would be the cause of Ferrari's lack of performance.

AUSTRALIAN GP - TOP SPEED PER LAP

LEC reached 333km/h, but HAM's top speed was consistently high: he used DRS on many laps, averaging 326km/h.

RUS (as OCO) NEVER used DRS: qualified well, avoided mistakes, and got on the podium!

Without DRS: ANT highest (317), NOR/OCO lowest (307).

Who surprised you the most in the season-opener? 🤔

LEC was SLOWER in all the last 4 corners in ⚫️Quali compared to 🔴FP2!🤯

Ferrari's overnight changes (probably raised the car to limit plank wear) killed its downforce and balance:
- Lost 8km/h and almost 1g in T11;
- Had to lift more in T12;
- Lost 2km/h and 0.4g in T13.

Another weird thing happened in qualifying (noted by @GaborWeber): Ferrari switched repeatedly between low and high power modes in qualifying, something I've never seen before (and which has no logical explanation).🤔

Ferrari's performance in the season opener left us with more questions than answers...

CHINESE GP PREVIEW

- More representative track than Australia; one-step-harder compounds (C2-C4) due to high tyre stress;
- Stability under braking and lateral grip will be important;
- Medium wing load provides the best drag/downforce compromise;
- Most stressed tyre: Rear Left.

Will Ferrari solve their issues?

Will the stricter wing flexibility tests impact the pecking order? 🤔
