In the 13th century, swiss territory was under rule of the Habsburg, the probably most famous noble family in Europe who ruled over today Austria and inherited the thrones of the Holy Roman Empire and Spain for example by marrying into countless noble families.

... The swiss however did not like their overlordship and yearned for independence, thus the legends say on the 1th of august the "Rütlischwur" came to be. In which represantives of the cantons Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden swore an oath to each other which goes as follows:

“ We want to be a single People of brethren,
Never to part in danger nor distress.
We want to be free, as our fathers were,
And rather die than live in slavery.
We want to trust in the one highest God
And never be afraid of human power. “
