Verses 24-25 have always given me motivation to encourage others and meet together with friends in the faith.

Verses 26-27 (red underlined) might be the scariest verses in the Bible. How many times have I knowingly, willfully sinned even though I had knowledge of the truth?? WHAT could this mean for me??

I turned to Matthew Henry’s commentary for insight:

“The author of Hebrews is here describing the sin of apostasy. This is sinning wilfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, sinning wilfully against that truth of which we have had convincing evidence. This text has been the occasion of great distress to some gracious souls they have been ready to conclude that every wilful sin, after conviction and against knowledge, is the unpardonable sin: but this has been their infirmity and error. The sin here mentioned is a total and final apostasy, when men with a full and fixed will and resolution despise and reject Christ, the only Saviour,—despise and resist the Spirit, the only sanctifier,—and despise and renounce the gospel, the only way of salvation, and the words of eternal life and all this after they have known, owned, and professed, the Christian religion, and continue to do so obstinately and maliciously. This is the great transgression.”

Faith is a big deal in Gods eyes.

“Faith demonstrates to the eye of the mind the reality of those things that cannot be discerned by the eye of the body.” - Matthew Henry

Even Paul, Gods chosen instrument to minister to the Gentiles, dealt with serious fear and weakness at times. Fear is not a sign that God isn’t calling you or cannot use you. In fact, it may be in the humility to acknowledge your own weakness where the Holy Spirit can take the reigns for you.

How often do we confuse talent and eloquence with the power of the Holy Spirit?

Matthew Henry on the Beatitudes (1714):
This sermon by Jesus is designed to rectify the ruinous mistakes of a blind and carnal world. The general opinion is, Blessed are they that are rich, and great, and honourable in the world they spend their days in mirth, and their years in pleasure they eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and carry all before them with a high hand - those are the blessed.

Now our Lord Jesus comes to correct this fundamental error, to advance a new hypothesis, and to give us quite another notion of blessedness and blessed people, which, however paradoxical it may appear to those who are prejudiced, yet is in itself, and appears to be to all who are savingly enlightened, a rule and doctrine of eternal truth and certainty, by which we must shortly be judged. If this, therefore, be the beginning of Christ’s doctrine, the beginning of a Christian’s practice must be to take his measures of happiness from those maxims, and to direct his pursuits accordingly.

David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s founding father and first Prime Minister, played a crucial role in shaping the policies and strategies that led to the creation of the State of Israel in 1948. His views on the need for a Jewish majority in the newly established state included the idea of population transfer, which became a significant aspect of the Zionist movement’s approach to securing territory. This strategy culminated in what is known as the Nakba (“Catastrophe” in Arabic), during which over 700,000 Palestinians were forcibly displaced from their homes as a result of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The Nakba left deep scars on the Palestinian people, as they were uprooted from their homelands, often facing violence, loss of property, and the destruction of entire villages.

While Ben Gurion saw the displacement of Palestinians as an unfortunate consequence of the broader conflict, his policies and decisions contributed to the widespread displacement that occurred during the Nakba.

In contemporary times, the legacy of Ben-Gurion’s views on the displacement of Arabs and the prioritization of a Jewish state continues to influence Israeli policy. The United States, as Israel’s most significant ally, provides billions of dollars in military and economic aid to Israel each year. This financial support has been crucial in bolstering Israel’s military capabilities and enabling its ongoing military operations in Palestinian territories, including the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Critics argue that this U.S. aid indirectly supports policies that perpetuate the suffering of Palestinians, including continued settlement expansion, military occupation, and actions that many view as a continuation of the Nakba’s legacy of displacement and dispossession.

Supporters of Israel, however, argue that U.S. aid is vital for Israel’s security in a hostile region and that the Israeli government’s actions are necessary for the survival of the state amidst persistent threats. They view the conflict primarily through the lens of security and see the displacement or marginalization of Palestinians as an unavoidable consequence of the broader struggle for Israel’s survival.
