شورای اجرایی سازمان یونسکو در دویست و پنجمین اجلاس خود، با توجه به نقش ریاضیات در پیشبرد سایر علوم بویژه در فهم مسائل بزرگ اجتماعی، زیست محیطی و معضلات مربوط به آنها مانند آثار تغییرات آب و هوایی، مبارزه با نابودی تنوع زیستی، پیش بینی و برآورد نیازهای رشد جمعیت از جمله غذا و کمک به یافتن راهکارهای علمی، ۱۴ مارس را به عنوان روز بین المللی ریاضیات نامگذاری کرد.
