USAID Shutdown Causing Funding Shortage For Ukrainian, Russian ‘Independent’ Media

Donald Trump’s shutdown of USAID has had a significant impact on several media outlets in Russia and Ukraine. Worldwide, the agency has provided nearly a half-billion in funds to media outlets.

“The suspension of USAID has had a dramatic effect on both Ukrainian and Russian independent news outlets that relied on the grants to operate and produced work often critical of their governments,” the Washington Post reports .

The Post labels the outlets as “independent” even though the article explains they were dependent on the US government for funding. Within days of Trump ordering a freeze on foreign assistance programs, several Ukrainian outlets began requesting donations.

The article adds, “Some organizations are saying that they are just weeks away from slashing staff or closing down entirely.”

The funding for Ukrainian and Russian outlets are just part of a global network. “USAID has pushed nearly half a billion dollars ($472.6m) through a secretive US government financed NGO, ‘Internews Network’ (IN),” Wikileaks posted on X. “Which has “worked with” 4,291 media outlets, producing in one year 4,799 hours of broadcasts reaching up to 778 million people and “training” over 9000 journalists (2023 figures).”

While USAID funding projects are often portrayed by the US government and the Post as “democracy building,” the money is often given to organizations that promote Washington’s objectives, even at times, subverting democratic election results.

Israel Expands ‘Open Fire Order’ In West Bank, Resulting In Surge Of Civilian Killings

The Israeli military is also using Palestinian civilians in the West Bank as human shields by making them check buildings for explosives

The Israeli military command overseeing operations in the occupied West Bank has expanded its “open fire orders,” leading to a surge in the killing of Palestinian civilians by IDF troops, Haaretz reported on Monday.

One of the orders allows Israeli troops to fire on unarmed Palestinians if they are “messing with the ground.” The claim is that this order is necessary to prevent explosives from being planted, but sources told Haaretz it has made soldiers “trigger happy.”

The other order allows Israeli troops to open fire on any vehicles approaching Israeli military checkpoints that are leaving combat zones to force them to stop. Since the combat zones are residential areas, this means the IDF can open fire on civilians trying to flee.

These orders led to the killing of a husband and his wife, Sundus Shalabi, who was eight months pregnant. Initial reports said Shalabi’s husband was “critically injured” by the Israeli military attack, but Haaretz said he was shot dead.

Sources told Haaretz that the husband was shot and killed while driving near Tulkarm, and Shalabi was shot dead after managing to get out of the car. According to an IDF investigation, Shalabi was shot because she “looked suspiciously at the ground.” No weapons or explosives were found in the car, which was carrying their two children. Palestinian officials said paramedics couldn’t attempt to save Shalabi’s unborn baby because IDF troops blocked the ambulance.

Independent Autopsy Finds Openai Whistleblower's Bullet Wound Was Not Consistent With Suicide

San Francisco's medical examiner ruled OpenAI whistleblower Suchir Balaji's death last year a suicide — but the young man's family claims in a recent lawsuit that their own pathologist found differently.

As Decrypt and other outlets report , the 26-year-old whistleblower's parents, Poornima Ramarao and Balaji Ramamurthy, say the independent autopsy they commissioned suggests that the gunshot wound that killed their son was inconsistent with suicide — building on claims they've been making since November that their son was murdered rather than having taken his own life.

In a lawsuit filed against San Francisco and its police department, the grieving parents are now accusing authorities of covering up foul play and demanding they release all files about Balaji's death.

"The lawsuit demands that the city, police department, and medical examiner release public documents withheld under the Public Records Act," the family's attorney Joseph Goethals told Decrypt . If authorities fail to do so expediently, the lawyer said that he would seek a court order to force the issue.

Just a month prior to his body being found in his apartment, the New York Times published a bold claim from the former OpenAI employee: that the company was, in spite of its half-baked insistence to the contrary, using "enormous amounts" of copyrighted materials without permission to train its models. Balaji knew this because he'd help gather said data before ChatGPT was released in November 2022.
