"Israeli forces have been accused of executing handcuffed Palestinian medics before burying them in a mass grave underneath their crushed ambulances in southern Gaza's Rafah.

Fifteen humanitarian workers went missing last week after responding to a distress call from civilians being attacked by Israeli forces.

The workers include eight paramedics from the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), six members of the Palestinian Civil Defence search-and-rescue teams, and one UN staff member.

They were found over the weekend in a mass grave with at least around 20 multiple gunshots in each one of them, according to Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for the Palestinian Civil Defence in Gaza.

At least one of them had their legs bound, another was decapitated and a third topless, he added.

The Palestinian health ministry said some of the bodies were found with their hands tied and with wounds in their heads and chests.

...Jonathan Whittall, head of UN's humanitarian affairs office in Palestine, said the mass grave was marked with the emergency light from one of the crushed ambulances.

The killings are the single deadliest attack on Red Cross/Red Crescent workers anywhere in the world since 2017, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

‘They were killed in their uniforms’

In a series of posts on X, Whittall explained what happened.

On 23 March, 10 PRCS and six Civil Defence first responders were dispatched to the area in Rafah where Israeli forces had advanced, to collect the wounded.

Israeli forces then struck the five ambulances and the fire truck, along with a UN vehicle that arrived later. Contact was lost with them.

The Israeli military said in an initial statement that trucks were struck because they were being used by Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Both groups deny using ambulances for military purposes.

...The UN teams “encountered hundreds of civilians fleeing under gunfire” and “witnessed a woman shot in the back of the head”, he added.

“When a young man tried to retrieve her, he too was shot. We were able to recover her body using our UN vehicle,” he said.

...“After hours of digging, we recovered one body - a Civil Defence worker beneath his fire truck,” Whittall said.

The recovered body on Friday was that of Anwar Abdul Hamid Al-Attar, a humanitarian mission officer.

“On the first day of Eid, we returned and recovered the buried bodies of eight PRCS, six Civil Defence and one UN staff,” Whittall continued.

“They were killed in their uniforms. Driving their clearly marked vehicles. Wearing their gloves. On their way to save lives. This should never have happened.”

Israeli forces have killed at least 105 members of the Civil Defence, 27 PRCS paramedics, 284 UN agency staff and nearly 1,400 health ministry workers since the war on Gaza began in October 2023..."

This is not a new tactic, Israel claiming ambulances were carrying Resistance fighters. Israel has made these claims since I lived in Gaza, and before.

Turkiye Readies Plans To Take Over Central Syria’s T4 Airbase: Report

Construction plans are said to be already underway, as Ankara looks to beef up the T4 base with a complex air defense system

The Turkish army is preparing to take control of the Tiyas Air Base in Syria’s central governorate of Homs, also known as the T4 base, sources told Middle East Eye (MEE) on 1 April.

Ankara is “preparing to deploy air defense systems there,” and construction plans are already “underway,” according to the report.

“Turkey has begun moving to take control of the T4 air base, located near Palmyra in central Syria. A Hisar-type air defense system will be deployed to T4 to provide air cover for the base. Once the system is in place, the base will be reconstructed and expanded with necessary facilities. Ankara also plans to deploy surveillance and armed drones, including those with extended strike capabilities,” the sources clarified.

They went on to say that this would help Turkiye consolidate aerial power across the region and “support efforts to combat ISIS,” which still has cells in the country’s central desert regions.

The report says Ankara plans to eventually equip the site with a complex defense system that would have short, medium, and long-range capabilities against jets, drones, and missiles.

Another source claimed “the presence of Turkish air defense systems and drones would likely deter Israel from launching air strikes in the area.” According to reports from this week, Israel is uncomfortable with such a plan.

The Turkish Defense Ministry has not commented on the MEE report.

The ministry had confirmed last month that there is ongoing coordination between Ankara and Damascus regarding plans to train Syria’s new military and the establishment of a potential training site in the country.

“The project has received regional consensus, and work is currently underway to bring it to life,” it said in a statement. Syrian interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa (former Al-Qaeda chief Abu Mohammad al-Julani) visited Turkiye in February, and reportedly discussed plans for a joint defense pact between Turkiye and Syria.

Turkish newspaper Turkiye reported around the same time that the Turkish army is planning to establish two new military bases in Syria that it will use to train the new Syrian armed forces.

Booz Allen Unveils ‘Brilliant Swarms’ Satellite Concept For Missile Defense

The technology and consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton unveiled a concept for a mega-constellation of satellites designed to fulfill the Trump administration’s “Golden Dome” vision for a comprehensive missile-defense shield to protect the United States.

The concept, dubbed “Brilliant Swarms,” would consist of up to 2,000 small satellites operating as an interconnected network powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning technology, according to company executives.

“Unlike today’s ground-based, single-shot interceptors, Brilliant Swarms delivers a multi-shot capability to defeat missile launches during the boost-ascent and early mid-course phases of flight,” Chris Bogdan, Booz Allen executive vice president and head of the company’s space business, told reporters March 27.

The satellites would serve dual purposes as both detection systems and “kill vehicles” that would de-orbit, target, and physically slam into threats without requiring missiles in space.

Cost and timeline

Trey Obering, senior adviser at Booz Allen and a former director of the Missile Defense Agency, said the system could be developed and fielded for approximately $25 billion, significantly less than the $65 billion spent on current missile-defense systems focused on threats from North Korea and Iran.

Obering clarified that $25 billion would be for all 2,000 satellites but the system is scalable so the cost could be lower, depending on the actual number of spacecraft.

The company has pitched the concept to the Missile Defense Agency and believes it could demonstrate the capability to intercept a cooperative target in orbit within three years, with the ability to intercept multiple uncooperative targets by the fourth year. Full deployment could occur within five to seven years.

Obering emphasized that the current missile defense system “does not address threats from Russia and China.”

Israel Prepares To Occupy '25 Percent Of Gaza' In Coming Weeks: Report

Netanyahu recently outlined the 'final stage' of the genocide in Gaza, which includes the complete disarmament of Hamas and the ethnic cleansing of two million Palestinians as per Trump's 'Riviera' plan

The Israeli army is preparing to “expand” its ground invasion of Gaza and occupy 25 percent of the strip over the next several weeks as part of a “maximum pressure” campaign aimed at forcing Hamas into accepting a new prisoner exchange deal.

“Reoccupation could go beyond Israel's stated objectives of the war and could serve as a pretense for pressing Palestinians to leave Gaza,” Axios journalist and former Unit 8200 member Barak Ravid reported on 31 March, citing an unnamed senior official.

The Israeli scheme has already begun with the forced displacement of Palestinians who had returned home after the January ceasefire. If no new agreement is reached, officials say the military could reoccupy most of the strip and force over two million people into a small “humanitarian zone.”

“Some Israeli officials say reoccupation is a step towards implementing the government's plan for ‘voluntary departure’ of Palestinians from Gaza and is necessary to defeat Hamas,” Ravid reports.

The news comes one day after Hamas accepted a new Egyptian proposal to resume the truce in Gaza.

Forever Chemicals Found In Sea Foam On New Hanover, Brunswick County Beaches

It’s white, fluffy, and may be bad for your health. —Sea foam is now added to the growing list of things impacted by forever chemicals, known as PFAS, in the Cape Fear region.

Samples of sea foam collected by researchers with Clean Cape Fear along New Hanover and Brunswick County beaches show extremely high levels of PFAS, according to a study called Going Upstream: The Environmental State of our Waterways.

“Our area has some of the highest levels of recorded PFAS in foam,” Emily Donovan of Clean Cape Fear said.

Donovan says the chemicals can sit on top of the ocean, like oil on water.

Just as bubbles form in a bubble bath, when the chemicals are agitated by the waves, they create foam that sits along the coast.

Sea foam occurs naturally in the ocean, however, instead of an off-white, brownish color, PFAS sea foam is a bright white and resembles shaving cream.

NC State Senior Research Scholar Jeffrey Enders, who analyzed the data, says the PFAS sea foam samples have upwards of hundreds of thousands to millions parts per trillion of PFAS. For context, federal drinking water standards have a 4 parts per trillion limit for forever chemicals in drinking water.

“Those levels are a surprise,” Enders said. “There’s probably dogs that walk along the beaches that lick it and eat it. I wouldn’t want my dogs eating it and I wouldn’t want my kids playing in it.”

Enders team found some of the highest PFAS observed are known Chemours-specific compounds.

Chemours has a manufacturing facility in Bladen County and has been held responsible for contaminating waterways in the Cape Fear for years.

“Sea foam is a symptom to an underlying problem,” Enders says. “If you don’t change things it’s just going to continue to get worse. The sea foam is already incredibly contaminated. The only way to make it better is to stop it at the source.”

Donovan is calling on state legislatures. Currently there is no drinking water standards at the state level in North Carolina.

“There’s no excuse at this point for state regulators to allow PFAS to be discharged in bodies of water when we know that we have been severely contaminated for decades and when we add to that burden, it’s putting everything here at risk,” she said.
