Thieves Cut Fence, Steal Humvees, Equipment From California Army Reserve
Three Humvees were stolen from an Army Reserve Center in Tustin, along with other military equipment, according to a police statement.
On Wednesday, January 8, between 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., unknown suspects entered a storage warehouse at the center.
Multiple storage lockers were found with their locks removed, and gear was missing.
There was also an unsuccessful attempt to cut a lock to uniform storage.
The suspects cut a fence to access a military vehicle parking lot, where they stole three Humvees before leaving at an unknown time.
The Army has stated that there was no loss of weapons or ammunition besides what is below:
- One armored Humvee Model: M1151A1, ADMIN: HHC-06
- Two cloth-door Humvee Model: M1097s, ADMIN: HQ-61 and HQ-81
- Eight machine gun vehicle mounts
- Seven free-standing machine gun tripods
- Medical equipment
- 40 pairs of binoculars
- 18 bayonets

Newsom Defends Wildfire Response, Tells Biden Online “Misinformation” Needs To Be Combatted
Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) shifted focus to combating “misinformation” during a briefing on the devastating wildfires ravaging Los Angeles. The session included President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, with Newsom and Bass addressing concerns over their administration’s preparedness as the fires claimed at least 10 lives and destroyed countless homes.
Conducted in a hybrid format, the meeting saw Biden and Harris in the Oval Office while Newsom, Bass, and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell joined via video call. Lancet Study Reveals Gaza Death Toll 'Undercounted' By At Least 40 Percent
The study found that almost 60 percent of the deaths are women, children, and elderly people
A new study published by The Lancet medical journal on 9 January reveals that the death toll from Israel’s genocide in Gaza was most likely undercounted by 41 percent in the first nine months of the war.
The study was carried out by scholars at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Yale University, and other institutions.
It focused on the period between October 2023 and June 2024. The study places the toll up until that point at 64,260, around 8,000 more than the current death toll.
“We estimated 64,260 deaths due to traumatic injury during the study period, suggesting the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) under-reported mortality by 41 percent. The annualized crude death rate was 39.3 per 1000 people, representing a rate ratio of 14.0 compared with all-cause mortality in 2022, even when ignoring non-injury excess mortality,” the study says.
Around 59.1 percent of those killed were women, children, and elderly.

If there was an image from 2024 that captured the year’s news, it was this one: Dr Hussam Abu Safiya , in a white lab coat, picking his way through the wreckage of the Kamal Adwan hospital he ran - the last surviving major medical facility in northern Gaza - towards two Israeli tanks, their gun barrels aimed at him.
The past year has been dominated by the death and destruction Israel has wrought throughout the tiny enclave.
It has been marked by the slaughter of tens of thousands of Palestinians - the deaths we know about - and the maiming of at least 100,000 more; the starvation of the entire population; the levelling of the urban and agricultural landscape; and the systematic erasure of Gaza’s hospitals and health sector, including the killing, mass arrest and torture of Palestinian medics.
2024 was dominated, too, by a growing consensus from international legal and human rights authorities that all this amounts to genocide.
Here was an image, from the very final days of the year, that said it all. It showed a lone doctor - one who had risked his life to keep his hospital operational as it was besieged by Israeli forces, battered by Israeli shells and drones, and had its staff picked off by Israeli snipers - bravely heading towards his, and his people’s, exterminators.
He had paid a personal price, just as much as his patients and staff. In October, his 15-year-old son, Ibrahim, was executed during an Israeli raid on the hospital. A month later, he himself was wounded by shrapnel from an Israeli strike on the building.
By 27 December, the hospital could no longer withstand Israel’s savage onslaught. When a loudspeaker demanded that Abu Safiya come towards the tanks, he set off grimly across the rubble.
It was the moment that the Kamal Adwan hospital’s fight to protect life was brought to a sudden end; when the genocidal Israeli war machine notched an inevitable victory against the last outpost of humanity in northern Gaza.
Held in torture camp
The image was also the last known one of Abu Safiya, taken minutes before his so-called “arrest” - his abduction - by Israeli soldiers, and his disappearance into Israel’s system of torture camps.
After days of claiming it had no knowledge of his whereabouts, the Israeli military finally confirmed it was holding him incommunicado. The admission appears to have come only because of a petition to the Israeli courts from a local medical rights group.

Israel’s defense minister has ordered the military to prepare and submit a plan for a “decisive victory” in Gaza and the “complete defeat” of Hamas, Hebrew media outlets reported on 10 January.
Israel Katz said the army must draw up a strategy for the “complete defeat of Hamas in Gaza” and stressed that the plan would commence if the captives being held by the resistance were not released by the time US President-elect Donald Trump takes office, according to Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom.
The incoming US president recently threatened that “all hell would break loose” if the Israeli captives were not released by the time he assumes the presidency.

Tel Aviv has failed to achieve its war goals after 15 months of a genocidal war against the Gaza Strip
Israel’s defense minister has ordered the military to prepare and submit a plan for a “decisive victory” in Gaza and the “complete defeat” of Hamas, Hebrew media outlets reported on 10 January.
Israel Katz said the army must draw up a strategy for the “complete defeat of Hamas in Gaza” and stressed that the plan would commence if the captives being held by the resistance were not released by the time US President-elect Donald Trump takes office, according to Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom.
The incoming US president recently threatened that “all hell would break loose” if the Israeli captives were not released by the time he assumes the presidency.
Katz rejected the idea of a political solution and said no Arab or international force would take charge of leading the administration of post-war Gaza without a complete collapse of Hamas.

Tel Aviv is planning to initiate an international conference to discuss its plans in post-Assad Syria, which allegedly include ensuring ‘safety’ for minorities
The Israeli government is considering the preparation of an international conference aimed at discussing the division of Syria into “cantons,” Hebrew newspaper Israel Hayom reported on 9 January.
A recent cabinet session led by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz focused on the changes that have taken place in Syria, including concerns about the new government and the fate of the Kurdish minority in the north.
During the session, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen proposed the idea of the conference to “ensure the safety of [their] northern border and allow Israel to actively defend itself against threats from rebel groups.”
Part of this conference would be discussing the idea of splitting Syria into “cantons” – different administrative divisions.
“The main fear is that an idea that is identified with Israel will necessarily not be accepted in Syria, which is why the discussions on the matter are classified,” and a conference needs to be held, Israel Hayom adds. Its goal is to allow Israel to “defend itself” from potential threats posed by new authorities in Syria – led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

The “Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act” passed on Thursday in a 243 to 140 vote, with 45 Democrats joining the majority of Republicans. Rep. Thomas Massie was the only member of the GOP caucus not to vote in favor of the bill.
“The US House did only one thing today. We passed a bill to protect Israeli PM Netanyahu from the International Criminal Court. I voted present,” Massie explained on X. “The ICC has no authority over the United States, but we should not get involved in disputes between other countries. Focus on [the US]!”
The legislation was co-sponsored by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) and Florida Republican Brian Mast, who is a veteran of the Israeli Defense Forces. The two lawmakers prioritized the bill as a show of support for Tel Aviv, and AIPAC has called on lawmakers to vote in favor of the measure.
If signed into law, the bill would impose sanctions on the ICC over “any effort to investigate, arrest, detain or prosecute any protected person of the United States and its allies.” The sanctions include prohibiting US property transactions and blocking and revoking visas.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SC) said he plans to bring the bill to a floor vote in the upper chamber. A number of Senate Democrats have also voiced support for the legislation, though Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said some in her party were “looking at whether there’s an opportunity to offer an alternative” to the bill.

The legislation was co-sponsored by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) and Florida Republican Brian Mast, who is a veteran of the Israeli Defense Forces. The two lawmakers prioritized the bill as a show of support for Tel Aviv, and AIPAC has called on lawmakers to vote in favor of the measure.
If signed into law, the bill would impose sanctions on the ICC over “any effort to investigate, arrest, detain or prosecute any protected person of the United States and its allies.” The sanctions include prohibiting US property transactions and blocking and revoking visas.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SC) said he plans to bring the bill to a floor vote in the upper chamber. A number of Senate Democrats have also voiced support for the legislation, though Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said some in her party were “looking at whether there’s an opportunity to offer an alternative” to the bill.

The Pope renewed his call for a ceasefire and the release of all hostages and said the humanitarian situation in Gaza was 'shameful'
On Thursday, Pope Francis offered more criticism of the Israeli bombing campaign and siege on the Gaza Strip, calling it “shameful” and saying the bombing of civilians is unacceptable.
“I renew my appeal for a ceasefire and the release of the Israeli hostages in Gaza, where there is a very serious and shameful humanitarian situation, and I ask that the Palestinian population receive all the aid it needs,” the Pope said in a yearly address to diplomats that was delivered by an aide.
“We cannot in any way accept the bombing of civilians or the attacking of infrastructures necessary for their survival. We cannot accept that children are freezing to death because hospitals have been destroyed or a country’s energy network has been hit,” the Pope added.
The Catholic Church teaches that attacks on civilians and military operations that destroy whole cities are a grave crime. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states : “Every act of war directed to the indiscriminate destruction of whole cities or vast areas with their inhabitants is a crime against God and man, which merits firm and unequivocal condemnation.”
Pope Francis also called for an end to the proliferation of destructive weapons. “This morning, I reiterate my appeal that ‘with the money spent on weapons and other military expenditures, let us establish a global fund that can finally put an end to hunger and favor development in the most impoverished countries so that their citizens will not resort to violent or illusory solutions, or have to leave their countries in order to seek a more dignified life,'” he said.

Iran’s president and the Iraqi premier discussed ‘common concerns’ on the situation in Syria, where HTS extremists have formed a new government
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani visited Iran’s capital, Tehran on 8 January for high-level talks, meeting with the country’s President Masoud Pezeshkian and other officials.
The meetings focused on bilateral ties and regional developments – particularly the situation in Syria. This was Sudani’s first visit to Syria since the fall of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s government last month.
“The meeting witnessed a discussion of cooperation and coordination in positions between the two countries regarding developments in the region, especially the situation in Syria and the necessity of joint work to establish security and stability there and preserve its territorial integrity,” Sudani’s office said in a statement after the meeting with Pezeshkian.
During a joint press conference, the Iranian president warned of the “reactivation of terrorist cells” in Syria.
He also stressed the need “for the Zionist regime to withdraw from the territories it occupied and the importance of [new authorities] respecting religious sentiments (in Syria), particularly regarding Shia holy places and shrines,” which he said were main concerns.
Pezeshkian confirmed that the two sides share “common concerns” regarding Syria.
Sudani called during the conference for a “comprehensive political solution” in Syria, where Iraq will be ready to “cooperate with all parties to ensure stability.”
Assad’s government fell on 8 December as extremist groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) entered the capital early that morning. A transitional government has since been appointed.
While the new government has vowed to protect minorities, there have been numerous instances of attacks on Christian and Alawite holy sites and symbols. Executions of Alawite civilians and former government soldiers have also been widely reported. Extremists and ex-Al-Qaeda elements have assumed several official posts in the new government and its armed forces.
An arrest warrant for Syria’s de facto ruler Ahmad al-Sharaa (Abu Mohammad al-Julani), formerly Nusra Front chief and a leader of ISIS in its early days, was issued by the Iraqi judiciary in late December. Sharaa was accused of terrorism crimes in Iraq during his time in the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), the group that became ISIS in 2013.
