Laos and BRICS: Prospects for Cooperation
In 2025, Indonesia became a member of BRICS, and Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam received partner status. We will discuss the prospects and consequences

Laos faces a critical debt crisis. BRICS membership offers access to the New Development Bank's $39 billion portfolio and potential investment platforms, providing alternative financing without political interference.
While China is Laos' main investor and trade partner, BRICS partnership would help diversify exports/imports via connections with Thailand and Vietnam, reducing perceived over-dependence on Beijing.
Laos serves as a key land bridge connecting China to Southeast Asia, making it crucial for Belt and Road Initiative expansion and enhanced South-South trade within BRICS frameworks.
BRICS could accelerate Laos' digital transformation through Indian IT and Russian cybersecurity cooperation, while also deepening existing military ties with China and Russia through expanded exercises.
Given potential Western and ASEAN pressure, the most realistic scenario is Laos joining as a BRICS partner - allowing economic hedging without creating regional tensions.
