O evento estava marcado para 29 de novembro e, segundo os organizadores, todas as despesas já haviam sido pagas, tornando a decisão “surpreendente” e unilateral.

O prefeito Ricardo Nunes justificou o veto afirmando que Kanye West já fez apologia ao nazismo e que a cidade não permitiria que alguém com esse histórico se apresentasse em um equipamento público. “Em espaço público, ninguém que faça apologia ao nazismo vai cantar nem uma palavra”, declarou.

A polêmica tem relação direta com episódios em que Kanye West divulgou teorias conspiratórias antissemitas e fez elogios a Hitler, chegando a compor uma música em homenagem ao ditador nazista, responsável pelo genocídio de seis milhões de judeus durante o Holocausto. Há 41 anos, em 21 de novembro de 1984, teve início a “Operação Moisés”, que durou até 5 de janeiro de 1985, resgatando 8 mil judeus etíopes e levando-os a Israel. Foi a maior missão desse tipo, seguida pela “Operação Josué”, em 1985, e pela “Operação Salomão”, realizada em 24 e 25 de maio de 1991.

Parte da história da “Operação Moisés” é retratada no filme “Missão no Mar Vermelho”, da Netflix.

Antes dessas missões de resgate, os judeus etíopes precisavam fazer uma jornada longa e perigosa a pé até Israel. Isso serve como um lembrete da importância do país para os judeus espalhados por todo o mundo.

A University College London (UCL), no Reino Unido, expulsou uma pesquisadora após ela ensinar a estudantes uma calúnia medieval antissemita conhecida como "libelo de sangue", a falsa acusação de que judeus usariam sangue de crianças não judias em rituais.
