کتاب ( سایه‌های ذهن ) اثری از فیزیکدان و ریاضیدان بزرگ پروفسور راجر پنروز که در آن این ایده را مطرح می‌کند که  آگاهی انسان، الگوریتم‌پذیر نیست و در هیچ "دستگاه کامپیوتری" قابل شبیه‌سازی نیست، همچنین ذهن انسان قابلیت‌هایی دارد که هیچ کامپیوتری آن را ندارد زیرا مکانیسم‌ذهن انسان بر اساس محاسبات فیزیکی نیست.  
 
Shadows of the Mind: A Search for the Missing Science of Consciousness is a 1994 book by mathematical physicist Roger Penrose, Penrose hypothesizes that: Human consciousness is non-algorithmic, and thus is not capable of being modelled by a conventional Turing machine-type of digital computer. The human mind has abilities that no Turing machine could possess because of this mechanism of non-computable physics.
 
پنروز استدلال می‌کند که آگاهی و ذهن انسان فراتر از محاسبات است و در علم امروزی بی‌پاسخ مانده است.
 
Instead, he provides powerful arguments to support his conclusion that there is something in the conscious activity of the brain that transcends computation--and will find no explanation in terms of present-day science. 
 
نتیجه‌گیری پنروز این است که ذهن انسان قادر به انجام فعالیت‌های خاصی است که دستگاه‌های مصنوعی از جمله کامپیوترها نمی‌توانند انجام دهند. این سؤال مطرح نیست که آیا ذهن انسان از همه جوانب نسبت به یک کامپیوتر برتر است ! به عنوان مثال در سرعت محاسبه ، کامپیوتر امروزی از ظرفیت انسان بسیار فراتر است. نکته قابل توجه این است که انسان می‌تواند کاری انجام دهد، مثلاً "درک" و "فهم" یک حقیقت ریاضی که یک دستگاه هرگز نمی‌تواند انجام دهد.
Penrose conclusion is that the human mind is able to carry out certain activities that artificial devices, including the Turing machine, can not. It is not the question whether the human mind is superior in all aspects to the Turing machine, for example in computing speed even present-day computers exceed by far human capacity. The remarkable is that man can do something, for example grasping the meaning of a mathematical truth, a machine never can do.
 
جناب پرفسور «Penrose» می‌نویسد:

حقیقت ریاضی چیزی نیست که ما فقط با استفاده از الگوریتم تشخیص دهیم. من همچنین معتقدم که آگاهی ما یک عنصر اساسی در درک ما از حقیقت ریاضی است. ما باید حقیقت یک استدلال ریاضی را "ببینیم" تا از اعتبار آن مطمئن شویم. این "دیدن" ذات آگاهی است. این باید هر زمان که مستقیماً حقیقت‌ریاضی را درک کنیم حضور داشته باشد. وقتی خود را از اعتبار ( قضیه کورت گودل ) متقاعد کنیم ، نه تنها آن را "مشاهده" می‌کنیم ، بلکه با این کار ماهیت بسیار غیرالگوریتمی فرآیند "دیدن" را آشکار می‌کنیم.

Penrose writes:
Mathematical truth is not something that we ascertain merely by use of an algorithm. I believe, also, that our consciousness is a crucial ingredient in our comprehension of mathematical truth. We must 'see' the truth of a mathematical argument to be convinced of its validity. This 'seeing' is the very essence of consciousness. It must be present whenever we directly perceive mathematical truth. When we convince ourselves of the validity of Gödel's theorem we not only 'see' it, but by so doing we reveal the very non-algorithmic nature of the 'seeing' process itself.
