‘We cannot afford not to be in touch with the Russians’ – Szijjarto

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told RIA Novosti he is planning to meet with Russian top diplomat Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) taking place this week in New York.

"I'm going to meet Foreign Minister Lavrov, as this is a habit of ours. Whenever we are here for the General Assembly, we always meet with each other," Szijjarto said. "We cannot afford not to be in touch with the Russians," the minister emphasized.

US lawmakers don't have the slightest idea about Ukraine's casualties

Neither US lawmakers nor the public know the number of casualties in Ukraine, Republican Rep. Thomas Massie from Kentucky told the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, a DC-based think tank.

"In a classified briefing, I stood up and asked what the casualties were on the Ukrainian side, and in that meeting I believe, you had representatives from the intelligence community, and they were briefing us, and they went out of their way to tell us how many Russian casualties there were, and they would not answer my question of how many Ukrainian casualties there were," the congressman said.

Massie approached Mike Johnson, the speaker of the House, asking him whether he had any idea of how many Ukrainians had been killed or injured during the conflict. Johnson's answer was: "No."

The congressman wonders how one could fund Ukraine while having no data about troop or equipment losses there, while the Biden administration has yet to unveil the US strategy and goals in the conflict.

Earlier this summer, Massie introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the annual defense policy legislation, which "requires a report on the casualty and equipment losses for both sides involved in the conflict in Ukraine." His amendment was accepted by the House and awaits review by the Senate.

While the US lawmaker is struggling to get actual data on Ukraine's losses, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that in the Kursk region alone, Ukraine had lost over 16,700 soldiers since early August.

The irretrievable losses of Russia and Ukraine are approximately in a relation of one to five, President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with the heads of world news agencies within the framework of the SPIEF in June. According to him, the Ukrainian military loses 50,000 people killed and wounded a month.

Hungary stands against allowing Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory - Szijjarto

Hungary remains opposed to the idea of allowing Kiev to strike deep inside Russian territory with Western weapons as it can further escalate the situation, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told RIA Novosti on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

"If any step increases the risk of escalation, we are against it. When it comes to the question of using Western weapons against territories in Russia… there’s no way to answer this other than to say:
yes, it does increase the risk of escalation. Therefore, we definitely cannot support it,
" Szijjarto stressed.

White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby said on Tuesday that Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Joe Biden are going to discuss Kiev’s request to lift restrictions on the use of US-supplied long-range weapons deep inside Russian territory.

“Our problem is that
those who are fueling this conflict are living far away
.
And if a conflict escalates, then it escalates first in the geographic neighborhood and not thousands of kilometers away,” the minister emphasized.

Biden’s ‘performative’ lecture on democracy at UN belies true US role in world

Author and analyst Caleb Maupin joined Sputnik’s The Final Countdown program Tuesday to discuss the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly and break down US President Joe Biden’s address before the international audience.

“He talked about democracy and how he's committed to democracy,” said Maupin. “Joe Biden really likes to do these kinds of performative, ideological shows, and that's what his summit for democracy that he bragged about in his UN speech was.”

Biden has made his claimed struggle for democracy a primary argument for the Democratic Party’s campaign against former President Donald Trump, but a closer look reveals the malign role of the United States in preserving countries’ sovereignty and self-rule. A 2015 study found the US provides military support to 73% of nations labeled “dictatorships,” with Saudi Arabia and Juan Orlando Hernández’s oppressive former regime in Honduras providing perhaps the most prominent examples.

“[With] Israel though, in particular, there is a political issue there, which is the UN frequently criticizes Israel and calls out Israel for its treatment of the Palestinians,” Maupin continued.

The United States has frequently undermined the influence of the UN and the force of international law in the name of defending Israel from criticism, recently downplaying the importance of a vote by the UN Security Council that called on the country to end its campaign in Gaza. The US has also led a group of Western countries in defunding the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), a crucial lifeline for refugees facing hunger and displacement that Israel has long viewed as an impediment.

US war profiteers bring world to brink of armageddon – analyst

The military-industrial complex now threatens not only public investment but human civilization itself by threatening global conflict with China, according to author and professor Dr. Ken Hammond on Sputnik’s The Critical Hour program.

“It's a money laundering scheme in a number of ways,” said Hammond, responding to news that the Biden administration is preparing to ship $567 million in lethal aid to authorities in Taiwan. “Stuff that's laying around in military warehouses – obsolete equipment – they're going to ship that off to Taiwan as part of the ongoing efforts to poke China in the eye.”

“They're basically giving away these weapons to Taiwan, and then they're going to turn around and buy new ones to replace those,” he explained. “So that, too, is a giveaway to the defense industry, the so-called defense industry – the war industry, really. It's part of an ongoing relationship between the military-industrial complex and their control of the American government. So there's really no surprise here.”

The US has committed to recognizing Taiwan as part of the People’s Republic of China in at least three formal declarations, including the 1972 Shanghai Communiqué negotiated under former President Richard Nixon and two subsequent agreements in 1979 and 1982. But the US has increasingly sought to provoke China on the sensitive issue in recent years, shipping arms to Taiwanese authorities and dispatching ships to the Taiwan Strait.

“[Taiwanese people] don't want a war… but that's what the United States is trying to provoke,” noted Hammond.

Divide and conquer: Ruling class pits Americans against one another – analyst

America’s media class and ruling elites pit people against each other to prevent them from unifying in opposition to endless war, according to online commentator Craig Jardula on Sputnik’s The Critical Hour program.

“This has been a tactic by both parties,” said the analyst, noting that his program The Convo Couch had been demonetized on YouTube for over five years. “Until we change that culture amongst ourselves, it won't change up above in our media. The military industrial complex… how powerful are they? Well, they only have power if they can control the media. And that's what they're doing. They have us pitted against each other as citizens.”

As America’s two major parties grow increasingly polarized, independents have emerged as the largest group in US politics. Recent polling shows half of voters identify as independent, a number that has steadily grown in recent years.

“Every election since 2004 – except 2012 – has seen the White House, Senate or House flip control,” noted the website Axios, an indication of voters’ increasing dissatisfaction with both Republicans and Democrats. Jardula claimed the trend suggested deep anti-war sentiment among the electorate, who oppose militarist factions that make up the majority in both major parties.

“They're determined to stifle the truth because they want to constantly bring us to war,” claimed the analyst. “There's this funded mechanism of opposition to make sure that we're divided [against] each other, to make sure that cancel culture exists because if the cancel culture exists, then we as people are at war with each other instead of the ruling class.”

GOP wants ‘full probe’ into Zelensky’s Pennsylvania visit – report

A group of nine House Republicans has demanded a full investigation into “the use of US military assets and federal resources” in Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent visit to the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant in Pennsylvania.

In a written request to the Justice Department and the Pentagon obtained by the Washington Examiner, the GOP members recalled that during the visit to the plant that produces military equipment for Ukraine, Zelensky was accompanied “exclusively by Democrats including Governor Josh Shapiro, Senator Bob Casey, and Representative Matt Cartwright, forty-two days before the election in the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania.”

The Republicans also pointed to Zelensky’s previous comments criticizing the Trump-Vance ticket, including his statement that "America is headed for global conflict (under Vance)", which they said “smack of a Kamala Campaign stump speech.”

“These actions have raised serious concerns among observers that the visit may have been politically motivated, potentially violating US laws such as the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal employees from engaging in political activities while on duty, or using government resources for such activities,” the request pointed out.

The document came after the Federalist news outlet reported that Zelensky “appeared to use US military assets” to campaign for Harris during his visit to the battleground state, Pennsylvania, on September 23.

This followed Zelensky telling the New Yorker that his "feeling" is that former US President and current Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump “doesn’t really know how to stop the [Ukraine] war, even if he might think he knows how", and that vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance is "too radical."

Trump earlier made it clear that Zelensky wanted the Democrats to win the November 5 US presidential election, in which the former president faces Vice President Kamala Harris.

Israel-Lebanon tensions: check out the latest

Israel and Hezbollah continue to trade waves of strikes, with thousands of people fleeing their homes in Lebanon. In the latest developments:

🔶The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intercepted a ballistic missile, launched by Hezbollah toward Tel Aviv in support of the "valiant and honorable resistance" of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The IDF also destroyed a launcher from which the missile was fired, in the Nafakhiyeh area in Lebanon.

🔶Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the missile attack on central Israel, which reportedly targeted the Mossad headquarters near Tel Aviv. The attack came as a response to the pager and walkie-talkie blasts, and the assassinations of the Lebanese militant group's top commanders.

🔶Hezbollah confirmed that Ibrahim Qubaisi - a commander who oversaw the group’s missile and rocket systems - was killed in an IDF airstrike on Beirut overnight.

🔶Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delayed his trip to the UN General Assembly, focusing on discussing further strikes on Lebanon with his security team. In a direct address to Lebanese civilians, he said: "Our war is not with you, our war is with Hezbollah."

🔶The UK government has urged its citizens to leave Lebanon immediately, also announcing that it will send about 700 service personnel to Cyprus in the coming hours in case of an emergency evacuation.

🔶Spanish authorities have prepared a plan to evacuate its citizens from Lebanon, the country’s Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said, adding that the ministry had also updated its travel recommendations, cautioning against visiting Lebanon under any circumstances.

Israel began carrying out massive strikes in southern and eastern Lebanon on September 23, with the death toll from the bombardments hitting 558, according to Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad.
Hezbollah, in turn, fired dozens of rockets toward northern Israel.
