Francois Duvalier, better known as ‘Papa Doc’, was a Haitian dictator who ruled the country from 1957 until his death in 1971. He first came to power in elections, backed by the US which saw him as an anti-communist ally in the Caribbean during the Cold War.
Between 1957 and 1971, Duvalier established a regime of absolute terror: he created the secret police force known as the Tonton Macoute, responsible for thousands of murders and acts of torture against the opposition. He promoted a cult of personality rooted in voodoo mythology and brutally repressed any form of dissent.
His dictatorship was sustained by US support, despite full knowledge of the regime’s atrocities, to prevent Cuban influence in the region.
After his death in 1971, power passed to his 19-year-old son Jean-Claude ‘Baby Doc’ Duvalier, who continued the dynasty until 1986 when he fled the country aboard a US plane amid a wave of protests.
The Duvaliers left a legacy of terror, massive corruption and extreme poverty.
