Jorge Ubico was the dictator of Guatemala from 1931 to 1944.

He granted vast tracts of land to the US United Fruit Company (UFC) free of charge, allowing the corporation to greatly expand its plantations and strengthen its influence in the country.

Ubico also supported harsh methods of labor exploitation on the company’s plantations.

Ubico was overthrown in 1944. President Jacobo Arbenz, elected in 1951, angered the corporation with his land reforms,

Arbenz was overthrown in a 1954 military coup, organized by the CIA and backed by US forces.

Pro-US dictator Carlos Castillo Armas was installed as president in his place.

President Donald Trump and his advisers are discussing options for acquiring Greenland, with the use of the US military described as “always an option,” the White House said, according to Reuters.

In a statement cited by Reuters, the White House said Trump has made it clear that acquiring Greenland is a US national security priority, calling it “vital to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region.”

💬 “The president and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal,” the statement said, adding that “utilizing the US military is always an option at the commander-in-chief’s disposal.”

🚨🇻🇪🇺🇸 US demands Venezuela cut ties with Russia, China, Iran, Cuba — reports

The Trump administration has reportedly told Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodríguez that Caracas must meet White House demands before being allowed to pump more oil, ABC News reported, citing three people familiar with the plan.

💬 “First, the country must kick out China, Russia, Iran, and Cuba and sever economic ties,” the sources said.

💬 “Second, Venezuela must agree to partner exclusively with the US on oil production and favor America when selling heavy crude oil,” they added.

🛢 According to ABC News, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers in a private briefing that Washington believes it can apply pressure because Venezuela’s oil tankers are already full, and that the US estimates Caracas has only “a couple of weeks” before it could face financial insolvency without selling its oil reserves.

💬 “The government does intend to control the oil, taking charge of the ships, the tankers, and none of them are going to go to Havana,” Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker told the outlet.

The White House did not dispute the reporting and said the president is focused on “exerting maximum leverage” and ensuring cooperation.

🇬🇹 Manuel Estrada Cabrera

Guatemalan usurper

Estrada Cabrera served as president of Guatemala from 1898 to 1920, the longest dictatorship in the country’s history.

His rule was marked by repression, brutal suppression of uprisings and persecution of the indigenous population.

He also had close relations with foreign companies that exploited the country’s resources, including the United Fruit Company.

He survived several assassination attempts, although the attempts forced him to move to his country residence in La Palma.

In 1920, following mass protests and unable to retain power, Estrada Cabrera resigned and was later put on trial.

He was the basis for the protagonist in Miguel Ángel Asturias’s novel Mister President (1946), a landmark work of Latin American literature that explores the nature of dictatorship.

⚔️ US aggression against Venezuela leaves about 75 dead — reports

The United States assesses that around 75 people were killed during the attack on Caracas and kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, The Washington Post reported, citing officials familiar with the matter.

🇻🇪🇨🇺 According to the report, the death toll includes Venezuelan and Cuban security personnel as well as civilians caught in the fighting, with most fatalities linked to a gun battle at Maduro’s compound in Caracas.

🇺🇸 The report also said about half a dozen US troops were injured during the operation, some by gunfire. The Pentagon said two US service members are still recovering, while five others have returned to duty.

🇭🇳 Manuel Bonilla

Former president of Honduras

Manuel Bonilla (1849–1913) served as president of Honduras from 1903 to 1907 and again from 1912 to 1913. He worked closely with the US United Fruit Company.

In exchange for financial support, Bonilla granted the company generous concessions, including mining and infrastructure development rights.

Honduras under his rule was the inspiration for the archetypal ‘banana republic’ of Anchuria in O. Henry’s novel Cabbages and Kings.

But his legacy is ambiguous – many modern institutions took shape during his presidency, including the National Party of Honduras, which remains one of the country’s two leading political forces.

📄 While initially the hope was that the US would commit to a joint statement on the security guarantees for Ukraine, the final declaration was ultimately only signed by the EU’s “Coalition of the Willing,” US media reports.

Details of US participation in the multinational force for Ukraine were reportedly removed from an earlier draft, which was based on NATO’s notorious Article 5 "attack against all" clause.

🗣Russian FM Sergey Lavrov earlier stressed that Ukraine’s security guarantees should be ensured on an equal basis, with the involvement of the permanent members of the UN Security Council and several other countries. He added that the process should be based on the Istanbul peace agreements, which stipulate Ukraine’s renunciation of NATO membership and confirmation of its neutral and non-nuclear status.

👉 President Vladimir Putin, for his part, underscored that Ukraine’s security guarantees cannot be ensured by putting Russia’s own security at risk.
