الإمام ابن كثير ‎ - قصص الأنبياء

PROPHET: HUD (عليه السلام)

PART: 1

THE LINEAGE

He is Hud bin Shelah bin Arphaxad bin Shem bin Noah عليه السلام. It is also said that Hud was Eber bin Shelah bin Arphaxad bin Shem. Ibn Jarir mentioned this.

HIS TRIBE AAD

His tribe was known as Aad, who were Arabs; they lived in the desert, in Yemen, in the mountains between Oman and Hadramout near the sea. Their dwelling place was known as Ash-Shahr, and the valley in which they lived was known as Mughith. They lived in huge tents with large pillars.

Allah said in the Qur’an:
“Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Aad; of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars: the like of which was never created in any land.” (Al-Fajr 89:6-8)

It is narrated from Abu Dhar in a long Hadith about the Prophets and Messengers that the Prophet ﷺ said: “… Four of them were Arabs: Hud, Salih, Shu’aib and your Prophet, O Abu Dahr!” (Sahih Ibn Hibban)

THE FIRST MAN TO SPEAK ARABIC

It
is said that Hud was the first man to speak Arabic.
Those Arabs who lived before Ishmael are called ‘Arab Aribah’ the original or Pure Arabs, and they were Aad, Thamud, Jurhum, Tasm, Jadis, Umaim, Madyan, Imlaq, Jasim, Qahtan, Banu Yaqtan and others.
Those who are called ‘Arab Musta’ribah’ – those who assimilated themselves by means of marriage, come from the lineage of Ishmael, the son of Abraham. Ishmael was the first to speak eloquent and literary Arabic. He learnt the Arab literature from the tribe of Jurhum, who happened to stay in Haram with him and his mother Hagar. He, however spoke better Arabic than them, and similarly our Prophet ﷺ used to speak Arabic eloquently.

AAD AND IDOLATRY

Aad were the first people to worship idols after the Flood. They had three idols: SAMD, SAMUD and HARA.

Allah sent Hud as a Prophet to them, so he called them to (worship and believe in) Allah. He said in surat Al-A’raf: “And to Aad (We sent) their brother Hud, he said: “O my people! Worship Allah, you have no other God than Him. Will you not fear Him? The chiefs of those who disbelieved from his people said: ‘Most surely we regard you of unsound mind (i.e. foolish) and we think you are a liar.’” (7:65-66).

They said that we regard the beliefs you are inviting us to as foolishness, comparing to the beliefs that we are practicing the idol worshipping from whom we seek our provisions and our help. That is why we see you as a liar in your claim of being a Messenger of God.

Question: Is it Obligatory to Move the Tongue when Reciting the Qur’ān in Prayer or is it Sufficient to say it in One’s Heart?

Answer: “Recitation must be done with the Tongue. Thus, if a Person Recites it in his Heart during the Prayer, then Certainly, that is Not sufficient.”

الإمام ابن كثير ‎ - قصص الأنبياء

PROPHET: HUD (عليه السلام)

PART: 2

It has already been mentioned, that Aad were the first people to worship idols after the Flood, as is indicated in this Verse: “And remember when He made you successors to the people of Noah, and increased you in status broadly.” (7:69). Or as it is said in this Verse: “Then, after them, We raised up another generation.” (23:31). This Verse indicates that the people of Hud, according to the correct opinion, were after the people of Noah.

Aad were a disbelieving people, transgressed against Allah and were deeply involved in idol worshipping.

To reform their beliefs, Allah sent a man from amongst them as His Messenger who could call them towards His way, and to the fact that all forms of worship belong to Allah, so a man should dedicate all his devotional acts only to Him.

Nonetheless, his people rejected his call, and adopted an aggressive and demeaning attitude towards him. So, Allah sent His punishment upon them and they were destroyed.

THE CHIEFS OF THE DISBELIEVERS DISREGARD THEIR PROPHET

When Hud invited them to worship only Allah, and that they should obey Him and seek forgiveness from Him, and that if they did so, Allah would provide them the best of both worlds, and if they were to disobey Him, they would be going to chastised severely in both worlds, their leaders said: “The chiefs of those who disbelieved from his people said: ‘Most surely we regard you of unsound mind (i.e. foolish).” (7:66)

They said that we regard the beliefs that we are practicing the idol worshipping from whom we seek our provisions and our help. That is why we see you as a liar in your claim of being a Messenger of God.

RESPONSE OF HUD

“He
Said: ‘O my people! I am not of unsound mind, but I am a Messenger from the Lord of the worlds. I bring you the Message of my Lord, and I am your sincere advisor”. (7:67-68) [His answer to them was]: I am not a preacher of trivial beliefs as you may tend to think, I am instead conveying to you the Message of my Lord, without any addition or falsification in it. Conveyance implies the integrity of the Message without any confusion or any lie incorporated in it.

MY REWARD IS WITH ALLAH ﷻ

Hud, by his communicating the Divine Message to his people, wanted the best for his people. He wanted their salvation and guidance. He never sought any reward from them, nor any favor for his obligation. He was carrying out his duties only for the sake of Allah, hoping for his rewards only from the One Who sent him as His Messenger.

Can a Muslim Ruler Imprison a Woman of Loose Morals?

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (Rahimahullah) Said:

And he (the ruler) may Imprison the woman if she Leaves her House (without reason and) Regularly, Especially (deliberately) in a Beautified Manner.

Rather Allowing her to Do so is Aiding her in Sin, and Allāhﷻ will Ask him About this.

He Who Lacks Ghayrah (Protective Jealousy) Is NOT A Man

قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : ثلاثة قد حرم الله تبارك وتعالى عليهم الجنة : مدمن الخمر ، والعاق ، والديوث الذي يقر في أهله الخبث.

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “There are three upon whom Allāh Tabārak Wa Ta'ālā has made Paradise Ḥarām (forbidden):

• The one addicted to intoxicants

• The one who is disobedient (to his parents)

• And the Dayyooth (shameless one) who approves lewd/evil acts of his womenfolk.”

● [رواه النسائي في السنن ٦١١٣]

Ibn al-Qayyim Raḥimahullāh said: “And that is because Ghayrah (protective jealousy) is from the basis of this religion so whoever lacks it then he lacks Deen, hence to Allāh a Dayyooth is the most vile creature and Jannah is Ḥarām upon him.”

● [الجواب الكافي]

al-Lajnah ad-Dā'imah (scholarly committee for research and Iftā) was asked if the label ‘Dayyooth’ applies to a man who allows his womenfolk to uncover themselves and wear unislamic attire or is it only applied to the one approves of acts of Zinā by his womenfolk??

They said: “So when one looks at these narrations then he understands that the label 'Dayyooth’ is applied to EVERYONE who APPROVES EVIL of those who are under his guardianship (Wilāyah), be it his wife or daughter or his sister, all of it is same whether he approves them committing Zinā or whether he approves them engaging in THE SOURCES THAT LEAD TO ZINĀ, like his woman (wife, sister or daughter) uncovering herself in front of an unrelated man or being alone with him or going out of her home with him…”

The Prophet Mohammad (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa salam) said,

Among (the signs of) the approach of the Hour is that evil people will be raised in status and right people will be put down;

people will speak eloquently but their deeds will be bad;

and the bad things will become widespread among the people.

I said, “What is the bad thing?”

He (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said,

“Whatever is written other than the Book of Allah (the Quran).

But if any of these three features is lacking, then the effect will be lacking accordingly."

WILL YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?

To remove any fear of seeking any favor or position among them, he said in the very beginning of hos Call: “O my people! I ask you no reward for this, my reward rests on he Who created me, will you not understand? (11:51)

Hud said to them: Do you not possess the distinguishing faculty that you may understand that I only invite you to the clear truth, which is also the demand of your NATURAL INSTINCT. That is the religion of truth with which Allah missioned Noah, and of whom Allah had destroyed those who rejected His Call.

FOLLOW THOSE WHO DO NOT ASK ANY REWARD OF YOU!

A similar Verse in Surat Ya-Sin says:
“Follow those who do not ask any reward of you, and who are guided. And Why should I not worship the One Who created me and to whom you shall be returned?” (Ya-Sin 36:21-22)

SOME OF OUR GODS HAVE SMITTEN YOU WITH EVIL!

The people of Hud said to him: “O Hud! You have not brought us a clear sign, and we shall not desert our gods at your word, we do not believe in you. We say nothing but that some of our gods have smitten you with some evil.” (11:53-54)
They said: You did not bring us any miracle supporting your claim of being truthful and so we are not going to leave our gods and their worship just on the basis of your hollow claim without any supporting evidence. It seems you are merely a crazy person. Our guess is that this madness has been inflicted on you only because you have angered some of our gods, and so they made you mad.

Ibn Taymiyyah and the Jewish man.

The Shaikh; when he was still in the midst of his youth, and wanted to walk towards the library, would be stopped in his path by a Jew who lived on the road leading to the library.

The Jew would ask him about various issues, and would be insistent with his questioning due to Ibn Taymiyyah’s intelligence and brightness. Ibn Taymiyyah would answer him swiftly, to the point that the Jew became fascinated with him.

Eventually, whenever Ibn Taymiyyah would cross his path, he would provide him with bits of information that would confirm the falsehood of what the man was upon.

This went on until the man accepted Islam and became a fully practicing Muslim, and this was due to the blessings that the Shaikh had despite his young age.

O Women, Stay In Your Homes |

Lock the women inside their homes (i.e do not allow them to leave the house without necessity) for indeed they, the women, are an ‘Awrah (something to be kept hidden) and when a woman leaves her home, Shayṭān looks up at her and says: 'Indeed you will not pass anyone except that he will fancy you’.”

PROPHET: HUD (عليه السلام)

PART: 4

SCHEME AGAINST ME, AND GIVE ME NO RESPITE

“He said: ‘I call Allah to witness, and you should bear witness that I am free of what you associate with Him of other gods, so scheme against me all together and give me no respite.” (11:54-55) Hud challenged them and disowned their gods. He said: They are unable to benefit or harm anyone. They are mere inanimate bodies. If according to your claim they help you and benefit you or harm you, so I am here renouncing them and sending my curse upon them. Now you can all scheme against me without giving me any respite by every means you may think of. You may start your conspiracy now without any delay. I do not have any fear of you or your gods.

“I have put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord, there is no creature that moves but He has the grasp of its forelock. Surely my Lord is on the Straight Path.” (11:56)

This in itself, was a clear evidence of the truthfulness of his claim and that what they held of beliefs was nothing but false beliefs.

This was the same reasoning which Noah took as evidence against his people: “My people! If it has become hard on you my stay in your midst and my reminding to you the Signs of Allah, then I have put my trust in Allah. So muster your plan and get together your associates and then let not your plan be ambiguous upon you then pass your judgement against me and give me no respite.” (10:71)

A HUMAN MESSENGER?

“And the chiefs of the disbelievers from among his people, who denied their meeting with Us in the Hereafter, and to whom We had given the bountiful things of this world, said: ‘He is no more than a man like yourselves, he eats, what you eat, and he drinks what you drink. And if you obey a man like yourselves, you surely will be losers. Does he promise you that when you are dead, and have become dust and bones, you shall be raised up?’” (23:33-35)

“Is it a wonder to mankind that We revealed to a man among themselves that: you warn the people.” (10:2)

“And nothing prevented the people from believing when the guidance came to them, but they said: ‘Has Allah sent a human as a Messenger?’ Say: ‘Had there been on the earth angels walking in serenity, We would have sent down from heaven an angel as a Messenger to them.” (17:94-95)

This was the reason why Hud answered them in these words: “Do you wonder that an admonition came to you from your Lord through a man from among you so he may warn you?” (7:63)

THIS WAS NOT SOMETHING TO WONDER ABOUT, BECAUSE ALLAH SEND WHOM HE PLEASES.

Know my son, that days consists of hours
and
hours are made of the breaths you take.
Every breath is a treasure chest, so beware of letting a breath pass by with no benefit.
You do not want to find an empty treasure chest on the Day of Judgement and regret.”
