On this day, 1 October 2020 two members of the al-Huwaitat Indigenous tribe in Saudi Arabia were arrested for criticising the Saudi government and its NEOM development project on social media. One of them was detained outside the Fahad Bin Sultan university in Tabuk. Numerous other members of the tribe had also been arrested, harassed and even killed. The Saudi Arabian government was intending to construct a $500 billion new high-tech development called NEOM, including the futuristic supposedly green city known as The Line, on al-Huwaitat land.Authorities offered only minimal compensation, and so the approximately 20,000 Indigenous people refused to vacate their homes. At the time of writing (September 2024), three Indigenous people have been given death sentences, and are awaiting execution: Shadli, Ibrahim and Ataullah al-Huwaiti.More information, sources and map: https://stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/7714/al-huwaitat-arrests To access this hyperlink, click our link in bio # 1 then click this photo

Good Idea: the Montreal Protocol

https://www.iflscience.com/antarcticas-ozone-hole-is-healing-and-set-to-recover-fully-by-2066-75983

The ozone layer over Antarctica is healing and could fully recover by 2066, thanks to global action that banned harmful chemicals like CFCs in the 1980s. This year's ozone hole is smaller than usual, partly due to some freakishly warm weather, but the long-term trend is positive. The key lesson here is that when countries come together and commit to solving a problem, big environmental challenges can be tackled. This success shows that for future issues like climate change, international cooperation and sticking to science-based solutions can really make a difference.
