context: A Bf 109 G-6 (Franz Stigler) was approaching to a B-17E Flying Fortress (Charlie Brown). He was ready to open fire and destroy the bomber, but he saw that the tail gunner wasn't in his site, so he advanced a bit more to saw the right side literally destroyed, where the 3 gunners were trying to lay and survive, he advanced a bit more to see where was the pilot (keep in mind that the B-17 was just with 2 engines shotted down, 1 damaged and just 1 of the engines were in perfect conditions, including that bomber just had a part of the tail, so they were losing alttitude very fast). In that moment Stigler knew that he couldn't shot down a ally bomber in that conditions, that wouldn't be human, just a monster would do it, so his best decision was to go with the bomber and escolt it through the german defenses (the german AA couldn't destroy a enemy meanwhile a german fighter is near him, cuz the explosion can damage the plane and probably do it lose the control) and let it to the americans in the sea.
