Yūsuf bin As-bāt (rahimahullāh) said: “It has reached us that the supplication of a slave is withheld in the heavens due to his unlawful food.”

Shu'aib bin Al-Habhāb (rahimahullāh) narrated: I said to Ibn Sirīn: “What is your view concerning listening to the people of desires (i.e. ahlul bidah)?”

حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ مَعِينٍ، ثنا شَبَابَةُ بْنُ سَوَّارٍ، قَالَ: جَاءَ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ، شُعْبَةَ فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا بِسْطَامٍ ح، وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ ثنا أَبُو بِشْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ , ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا دَاوُدَ الطَّيَالِسِيَّ، يَقُولُ:
Once we were with Shu’bah (rahimahullāh), so Sulaymān Ibnul Mughīrah (rahimahullāh) came along whilst weeping.
\" كُنَّا عِنْدَ شُعْبَةَ , فَجَاءَ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ يَبْكِي ,
Shu‘bah (rahimahullāh) said to him, “What makes you weep O Abā Sa’īd?”
فَقَالَ لَهُ شُعْبَةُ: مَا يُبْكِيكَ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ؟
He said, ”My donkey died;
قَالَ: مَاتَ حِمَارِي
I missed the Jumu’ah prayer,
وَذَهَبَتْ مِنِّي الْجُمُعَةُ ,
And my needs.”
وَذَهَبَتْ حَوَائِجِي
He (Shu‘bah) asked: “How much did you buy it for?”
قَالَ: فَبِكَمْ أَخَذْتَهُ؟
He replied, “Three dinārs.”
قَالَ: بِثَلَاثَةِ دَنَانِيرَ ,
He (Shu’bah) said, “I have three dinārs;
قَالَ: فَعِنْدِي ثَلَاثَةُ دَنَانِيرَ ,
By Allāh I do not have other than it.
وَاللهِ مَا أَمْلِكُ غَيْرَهَا
O boy bring that scrap (of cloth).”
يَا غُلَامُ , هَاتِ تِلْكَ الصُّرَّةَ ,
And in it was three dinārs,
فَإِذَا فِيهَا ثَلَاثَةُ دَنَانِيرَ ,
So he gave it to him (i.e to Sulaymān)
فَدَفَعَهَا إِلَيْهِ
And he (Shu'bah) said, ”Buy a donkey,
وَقَالَ: اشْتَرِ بِهَا حِمَارًا ,
And do not weep."

Muslim Bin Ibrāhīm (rahimahullāh) said:
أَخْبَرَنَا أحمد بن محمد العتيقي، قال: حَدَّثَنَا محمد بن أحمد بن إبراهيم بن أحمد بن محمد الحداد بتنيس، قال: حَدَّثَنَا بكر بن أحمد بن حفص الشعراني، قال: حَدَّثَنَا حفص بن عمر سنجة، قال: سمعت مسلم بن إبراهيم، يقول:
I have never entered upon Shu'bah (rahimahullāh) at the time of prayer (i.e. optional prayers) except that he was praying.
ما دخلت على شعبة في وقت صلاة قط إلا رأيته قائما يصلي،
He was the father and mother of the poor people,
وكان أبو الفقراء وأمهم،
And I heard him saying: “By Allāh! Had it not been for the poor people I would never sit with you.”
وسمعته يقول: والله لولا الفقراء ما جلست لكم.

وَقَالَ الْفُضَيْلُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ:
“We do not recognize one (merely) due to his accomplishment of a lot of prayers and fasting;
مَا أَدْرَكَ عِنْدَنَا مَنْ أَدْرَكَ بِكَثْرَةِ الصَّلَاةِ وَالصِّيَامِ،
Rather what is recognizable to us are generosity,
وَإِنَّمَا أَدْرَكَ عِنْدَنَا بِسَخَاءِ الْأَنْفُسِ،
Guilelessness
وَسَلَامَةِ
And being good natured,
الصُّدُورِ،
And to give sincere advice to the Ummah.”
وَالنُّصْحِ لِلْأُمَّةِ.

Zayd ibn Aslam reported that Ibn Mas'ūd (may Allāh be pleased with him) said:
وَقَالَ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي عُتْبَةُ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ أَنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ كَانَ يَقُولُ
“That I sit in a gathering of fiqh for an hour is more beloved to me than fasting a day and praying a night.”

It was said to Sa'd Ibn Abī Waqqās (radiyallāhu-anhu): “Amongst the companions of the Messenger ﷺ your supplication is answered?”
وَرَوَى عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ: حَدَّثَنَا الْأَصْفَرُ، قَالَ: قِيلَ لِسَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ: تُسْتَجَابُ دَعْوَتُكَ مِنْ بَيْنِ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟
He said: “I have never put a morsel of (food) in my mouth,
فَقَالَ: مَا رَفَعْتُ إِلَى فَمِي لُقْمَةً
Except that I knew where it came from
إِلَّا وَأَنَا عَالِمٌ مِنْ أَيْنَ مَجِيئُهَا،
And where it originated.”
وَمِنْ أَيْنَ خَرَجَتْ.

Al-Walīd bin Mazīd (rahimahullāh) said: I heard Al-Awzā'ī (rahimahullāh) saying:
قَالَ الوَلِيْدُ بنُ مَزْيَدٍ: سَمِعْتُ الأَوْزَاعِيَّ يَقُوْلُ:
“If Allāh wishes evil for a people,
إِذَا أَرَادَ اللهُ بِقَوْمٍ شَرّاً،
He opens for them the door of argumentation,
فَتَحَ عَلَيْهِمُ الجَدَلَ،
And prevents them from action.”

It was said to Al-Wahb Ibn Munabbih (rahimahullāh): “Is not the testimony that ‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allāh’ the key to (entering) Paradise?”
وَقِيلَ لِوَهْبِ بْنِ مُنَبِّهٍ: أَلَيْسَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مِفْتَاحُ الجَنَّةِ؟
He said: ‘Certainly,
قَالَ: «بَلَى،
But there is not a key except that it has teeth;
وَلَكِنْ لَيْسَ مِفْتَاحٌ إِلَّا لَهُ أَسْنَانٌ،
So if you come with a key that has teeth,
فَإِنْ جِئْتَ بِمِفْتَاحٍ لَهُ أَسْنَانٌ
It will open for you,
فُتِحَ لَكَ،
Otherwise it will not open for you.’
وَإِلَّا لَمْ يُفْتَحْ لَكَ»

فمتى اغتذت القلوب بالبدع لم يبق فيها فضل للسنن،
So they come to be in the position of one who nourishes (himself) with filth.”
فتكون بمنزلة من اغتذى بالطعام الخبيث.

‘Imrān ibn Hamdān reported that Abū Uthmān An-Naysabūrī (rahimahullāh) said:
سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَمْرِو بْنَ حَمْدَانَ، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عُثْمَانَ الْحِيرِيَّ، يَقُولُ:
Whoever commands himself with the Sunnah in speech and action will speak with wisdom.

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَمْرِو بْنَ حَمْدَانَ، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عُثْمَانَ الْحِيرِيَّ، يَقُولُ:
Whoever commands himself with the Sunnah in speech and action will speak with wisdom.
\" مَنْ أَمَّرَ السُّنَّةَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ قَوْلًا وَفِعْلًا نَطَقَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ
And whoever commands himself with desires in speech and action will speak with innovation.
وَمَنْ أَمَّرَ الْهَوَى عَلَى نَفْسِهِ نَطَقَ بِالْبِدْعَةِ
As Allāh ta’ala said: “And if you obey him, you will be (rightly) guided.” [Al-Nūr: 54]

“Fasting is abstinence of the limbs from sins and abstinence of the stomach from food and drink.
فالصوم هو صوم الجوارح عن الآثام وصوم البطن عن الشراب والطعام،
And just as food and drink nullifies and corrupts the fasting,
فكما أن الطعام والشراب يقطعه ويفسده
Likewise sins curtail its reward and corrupt its fruits,
فهكذا الآثام تقطع ثوابه وتفسد ثمرته،
So it leads him (i.e. the person) to the position of one who has not fasted.”
فتصيره بمنزلة من لم يصم.

Abū Muslim Al-Khawlaanee (rahimahullāh) used to remember (Allāh) much;
كَانَ أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْخَوْلَانِيُّ كَثِيرَ الذِّكْرِ،
So some people saw him and disapproved of his state of affairs.
فَرَآهُ بَعْضُ النَّاسِ فَأَنْكَرَ حَالَهُ،
They said to his companions: “Is your companion insane?”
فَقَالَ لِأَصْحَابِهِ: أَمَجْنُونٌ صَاحِبُكُمْ؟
So Abū Muslim heard (this) and said: “No, O brother,
فَسَمِعَهُ أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ، فَقَالَ لَا يَا أَخِي،
This (i.e. remembrance of Allāh) is a remedy for insanity.”
وَلَكِنَّ هَذَا دَوَاءُ الْجُنُونِ.

Muḥammad ibn Sa‘d al-Ansārī reported that Abū al-Dardā (may Allāh be pleased with him) said:
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ بِشْرَانَ، أَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الْكاذيُّ، نا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، نا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الضَّبِّيُّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ قَالَ:
“I seek refuge from the hypocritical khushū‘.”
\" اسْتَعِيذُوا بِاللهِ مِنْ خُشُوعِ النِّفَاقِ \"
It was asked, “What is hypocritical khushū’?”
قِيلَ لَهُ: وَمَا خُشُوعُ النِّفَاقِ؟
He replied: “That you see the body (showing an image of tranquillity and fear in the presence of Allāh),
قَالَ: \" أَنْ تَرَى الْجَسَدَ خَاشِعًا
But the heart is not (tranquil and fearful).”
وَالْقَلْبَ لَيْسَ بِخَاشِعٍ \"

مَنْ بَخِلَ بِالْعِلْمِ ابَتُلِيَ بِثَلَاثٍ:

Or forgetfulness;
