Muḥammad ibn Sa‘d al-Ansārī reported that Abū al-Dardā (may Allāh be pleased with him) said:
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ بِشْرَانَ، أَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الْكاذيُّ، نا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، نا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الضَّبِّيُّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ قَالَ:

“I seek refuge from the hypocritical khushū‘.”
\" اسْتَعِيذُوا بِاللهِ مِنْ خُشُوعِ النِّفَاقِ \"

It was asked, “What is hypocritical khushū’?”
قِيلَ لَهُ: وَمَا خُشُوعُ النِّفَاقِ؟

He replied: “That you see the body (showing an image of tranquillity and fear in the presence of Allāh),
قَالَ: \" أَنْ تَرَى الْجَسَدَ خَاشِعًا

But the heart is not (tranquil and fearful).”
وَالْقَلْبَ لَيْسَ بِخَاشِعٍ \"

'Abdullāh ibn Al-Mubārak said:

“Whoever is stingy with knowledge is put to trial with three:
مَنْ بَخِلَ بِالْعِلْمِ ابَتُلِيَ بِثَلَاثٍ:

Either with death, so his knowledge goes away;
إِمَّا بِمَوْتٍ فَيَذْهَبُ عِلْمُهُ،

Or forgetfulness;
أَوْ بِالنِّسْيَانِ،

Or put to trial by the ruler.”

“The fasting person is the one whose limbs abstain from sins;
والصائم هو الذي صامت جوارحه عن الآثام،

His tongue (abstains) from lying,
ولسانه عن الكذب

Lewdness and false speech;
والفحش وقول الزور،

His stomach (abstains) from food and drink,
وبطنه عن الطعام والشراب،

And his private parts (abstain) from obscenity.
وفرجه عن الرفث.

When he speaks, he does not speak with what harms his fasting,
فإن تكلم لم يتكلم بما يجرح صومه،

And when he acts he does not do what corrupts his fasting.
وإن فعل لم يفعل ما يفسد صومه،

All his speech comes out useful and righteous.
فيخرج كلامه كله نافعاً صالحاً،

Likewise his actions are of the status of that scent that is smelled by the one who sits with the seller of musk,
وكذلك أعماله فهي بمنزلة الرائحة التي يشمها من جالس حامل المسك،

And likewise the one who sits with the fasting person is benefited by sitting with him and is saved from false speech,
كذلك من جالس الصائم انتفع بمجالسته وأمن فيها من الزور

Lies,
والكذب

Evil deeds,
والفجور

And oppression.
والظلم.

This is the legislated fasting
هذا هو الصوم المشروع

And not merely abstaining from food and drink.”
لا مجرد الإمساك عن الطعام والشراب،

And it is (reported) in the authentic hadīth: “Whoever does not give up lying speech (false statements) and acting on those lies and evil actions etc., Allāh is not in need of his leaving his food and drink.” [Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī, vol 3, hadīth Number: 1903]
ففي الحديث الصحيح «من لم يدع قول الزور والعمل به والجهل فليس لله حاجة أن يدع طعامه وشرابه».

Al-Mutawakkil bin Husayn al-'Abbād reported that Ibrāhīm bin Ad’ham (rahimahullāh) said:
حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مِسْكِينُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصُّوفِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي الْمُتَوَكِّلُ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ الْعَابِدُ، قَالَ: قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ أَدْهَمَ:

“Abstinence from the worldly life is of three types:
الزُّهْدُ ثَلَاثَةُ أَصْنَافٍ،

Obligatory abstinence,
فَزُهْدٌ فَرْضٌ،

The abstinence that is of a superior virtue,
وَزُهْدٌ فَضْلٌ،

And the abstinence that is safety;
وَزُهْدٌ سَلَامَةٌ

As for the obligatory abstinence,
فَالزُّهْدُ الْفَرْضُ:

It is to abstinence from the unlawful;
الزُّهْدُ فِي الْحَرَامِ،

And the abstinence that is of superior virtue:
وَالزُّهْدُ الْفَضْلُ:

Is to abstain from what is lawful (but unnecessary);
الزُّهْدُ فِي الْحَلَالِ،

And the abstinence that is safety:
وَالزُّهْدُ السَّلَامَةُ:

Is to abstain from the doubtful matters.”

“The worldly life and the afterlife in the heart are like the two equal sides of a scale;

Imām Aḥmad (rahimahullāh) said: “The people are in need of persuasion and gentleness when being commanded with good and forbidden from evil,
وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ: النَّاسُ مُحْتَاجُونَ إِلَى مُدَارَاةٍ وَرِفْقِ الْأَمْرِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ بِلَا غِلْظَةٍ

Except a man who announces his evil,

Al-Qāsim bin Ma'n (rahimahullāh) narrated:
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَمَاعَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مَعْنٍ،

Indeed, Abū Hanīfah (rahimahullāh) stood up all night whilst repeating the statement of Allāh:
\" أَنَّ أَبَا حَنِيفَةَ قَامَ لَيْلَةً يُرَدِّدُ قَوْلَهُ تَعَالَى:

“Nay, but the Hour is their appointed time (for their full recompense), and the Hour will be more grievous and more bitter.” [Sūrah Al-Qamar: 46]
{بَلِ السَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ وَالسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَى وَأَمَرُّ} [القمر: 46] ،

And he wept
وَيَبْكِي

And humbled himself until Fajr.
وَيَتَضَرَّعُ إِلَى الصَّبَاحِ \"

Bravery is not bodily strength;
وَالشَّجَاعَةُ لَيْسَتْ هِيَ قُوَّةُ الْبَدَنِ

For indeed a man could be bodily strong, but weak at heart.
وَقَدْ يَكُونُ الرَّجُلُ قَوِيَّ الْبَدَنِ ضَعِيفَ الْقَلْبِ؛

Indeed bravery is only strength of the heart and its steadfastness.
وَإِنَّمَا هِيَ قُوَّةُ الْقَلْبِ وَثَبَاتُهُ.

`Amr bin Shu`aib narrated from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet ﷺ said:
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَمْرٍو، مُسْلِمُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْحَذَّاءُ الْمَدِينِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ أَبِي حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ

“The best of supplication is the supplication of the Day of `Arafah.
‏"‏ خَيْرُ الدُّعَاءِ دُعَاءُ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ

And the best of what I and the Prophets before me have said is:
وَخَيْرُ مَا قُلْتُ أَنَا وَالنَّبِيُّونَ مِنْ قَبْلِي

None has the right to be worshipped but Allāh,
لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ

Alone, without partner,
وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ

To Him belongs all that exists, and to Him belongs the Praise,
لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ

And He is powerful over all things. (Lā ilāha illallāh, waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu, wa huwa `alā kulli shai’in qadīr).’”
وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ‏"‏ ‏

Abū Dāwud As-Sijistānī (rahimahullāh) said:
وَقَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ السِّجِسْتَانِيُّ:

“The gatherings of Aḥmad Ibn Hanbal used to be gatherings of (remembrance) of the Afterlife,
كَانَتْ مُجَالَسَةُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ مُجَالَسَةُ الْآخِرَةِ،

And the worldly things were not mentioned in them.
لَا يَذْكُرُ فِيهَا مِنْ أَمْرِ الدُّنْيَا،

I have never seen Aḥmad Ibn Hanbal speak about the worldly things.”
مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحْمَدَ بْنَ حَنْبَلٍ ذَكَرَ الدُّنْيَا قَطُّ.

Eid Mubārak

It is authentically related from ad-Dāraqutnī that he said: There is nothing more despised by me than ‘ilmul-kalām (innovated speech and rhetorics).
وَصَحَّ عَنِ الدَّارَقُطْنِيِّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: مَا شَيْءٌ أَبغضُ إِلَيَّ مِنْ عِلمِ الكَلاَمِ.

I say: He never entered into ‘ilmul-kalām, nor argumentation.
قُلْتُ: لَمْ يَدْخلِ الرَّجُلُ أَبداً فِي علمِ الكَلاَمِ وَلاَ الجِدَالِ، وَلاَ خَاضَ فِي ذَلِكَ،

Rather, was a Salafī (a follower of the Salaf).
بَلْ كَانَ سلفيّاً،

This was heard from Abū 'Abdur-Rahmān as-Sulamī.

Shamīt bin Ajlān (rahimahullāh) said:
حُدِّثْتُ عَنْ أَبِي عَاصِمٍ الْعَبَّادَانِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ شُمَيْطَ بْنَ عَجْلَانَ يَقُولُ:

“O son of Ādam:
\" يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ

Indeed, you do not keep silent
إِنَّكَ مَا سَكَتَّ

Except that you are safe;
فَأَنْتَ سَالِمٌ،

But when you do speak,
فَإِذَا تَكَلَّمْتَ

Be careful,
فَخُذْ حَذَرَكَ:

Because it will either be for you
إِمَّا لَكَ

Or against you.”

Wakī' ibn Jarrah reported that Sufyān ath-Thawrī said:
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ، ثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، ثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي الْحَوَارِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ وَكِيعًا، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ سُفْيَانَ، يَقُولُ:

“Do not accept an invitation,
لَا تُجِيبُوا دَعْوَةً

Except the invitation of one whom your hearts feel good/are at ease about his food.”
إِلَّا دَعْوَةَ مَنْ تَرَوْنَ أَنَّ قُلُوبَكُمْ تَصْلُحُ عَلَى طَعَامِهِ

Ishāq (rahimahullāh) said:
وَقَالَ إِسْحَاقُ:

Sulaymān Al-Khawwās (rahimahullāh) came to Bairut,
كَانَ سُلَيْمَانُ الْخَوَّاصُ أَتَى بَيْرُوتَ

So Sa‘īd bin Abdil Azīz (rahimahullāh) entered upon him (i.e. visited him).
فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ،

He (Sa'īd) said to him: “What is it with you that I find you in the dark?”
وَقَالَ: مَالِي أَرَاكَ فِي الظُّلْمَةِ؟

He said: “The darkness of the grave is more severe.”
قَالَ: ظُلْمَةُ الْقَبْرِ أَشَدُّ،

He (Sa’īd) said: “What is it with you that you have no close friend?”
قَالَ: مَالِي أَرَاكَ لَيْسَ لَكَ رَفِيقٌ؟

He said: “I fear to have a friend whom I am not able to fulfil his rights.”
قَالَ: أَخَافُ أَنْ يَكُونَ لِي رَفِيقٌ لَا أَقْدِرُ أَنْ أَقُومَ بِحَقِّهِ.

Sa'īd Ibn Abdil-Azīz At-Tanūkhiy (may Allāh have mercy on him)
ذِكْرُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ التَّنُوخِيِّ رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ

Abū Abdir-Rahmān Al-Asadiy (rahimahullāh) said: I said to Sa‘īd Ibn Abdil Azīz (rahimahullāh):
قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْأَسَدِيِّ: قُلْتُ لِسَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ:

“O Abū Muḥammad! What is this weeping that occurs from you in Salaah (prayer)?”
يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ مَا هَذَا الْبُكَاءُ الَّذِي يَعْرِضُ لَكَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ؟

He said: “O my nephew! What is the (reason) for your question about this?”
قَالَ: يَا ابْنَ أَخِي مَا سُؤَالُكَ عَنْ هَذَا؟

I said: “O my uncle! Perhaps Allāh may benefit me by it.”
قُلْتُ: يَا عَمِّي لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَنْفَعَنِي بِهِ،

So Sa’īd said: “I do not stand up in my Salaah except that the Hellfire is exemplified for me.”
فَقَالَ سَعِيدٌ: مَا قُمْتُ فِي صَلَاتِي إِلَّا مُثِّلَتْ لِي جَهَنَّمُ.

Rayyāh Ibn Zayd as-San'ānī (may Allāh have mercy on him)
ذِكْرُ رَيَّاحِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ الصَّنْعَانِيِّ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ

Ibn al-Mubārak reported that he (Rayyāh) died in the year 87AH,
يَرْوِي عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ , وَعُمَرَ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ، قَاضِيهِمْ، يَرْوِي عَنْهُ ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، مَاتَ سَنَةَ سَبْعٍ وَثَمَانِينَ،

At 81 years old.
وَهُوَ ابْنُ إِحْدَى وَثَمَانِينَ سَنَةً،

He [Rayyāh (rahimahullāh)] was a Shaikh, a righteous and virtuous person.
وَكَانَ شَيْخًا صَالِحًا فَاضِلًا،

Imām Aḥmad (rahimahullāh) used to say: “Indeed I love Rayyāh,
كَانَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ، يَقُولُ: إِنِّي أُحِبُّ رَيَّاحَ

I love his hadīth,
وَأُحِبُّ حَدِيثَهُ

And I love a mention of him.”
وَأُحِبُّ ذِكْرَهُ.
