معرفی کتاب

محور اصلی این کتاب درخشان تلاقی پرشور خلاقیت ریاضی و تفکرات عرفانی در مورد پیدایش نظریۀ مجموعه ها در روسیه در اوایل سدۀ بیستم میلادی است.

شرح تمایز توسعۀ این نظریه در فرانسه داستان را واضح تر می کند. کتاب با ترسیم زندگی ریاضی دانان بزرگ مورد بحث مهیج تر می شود:تصاویر تراژیک ، اسف انگیز ، شرارت بار ، یا تحسین برانگیز. مولفان توصیفی موجز ، استادانه و استوار از مفهوم بی نهایت ارائه می کنند که برای خوانندگان ریاضی ندان هم فهمیدنی است. تجدید خاطرۀ محافل ریاضی آن دوره چنان صمیمانه نگاشته شده است که خواننده احساس می کند در کنار قهرمانان داستان زیسته ، کار کرده و رنج برده است. گراهام و کانتور مقطع شگفت انگیزی از تاریخ ریاضیات را عرضه کرده اند.

Method of indivisibles is attributed to Bonaventura Cavalieri and more precisely to the principle named after him and well known in geometry: Cavalieri's principle, sometimes called the method of indivisibles.

Today Cavalieri's principle is seen as an early step towards integral calculus, and while it is used in some forms, such as its generalization in Fubini's theorem, results using Cavalieri's principle can often be shown more directly via integration. In the other direction, Cavalieri's principle grew out of the ancient Greek method of exhaustion, which used limits but did not use infinitesimals.
