🙅‍♂️ Apple drops promised 'Sketch' style option from Image Playground

✏️ At WWDC, the company promised that the new tool would support three styles of image generation: animation, illustration, and sketch. However, in the beta versions of iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2, users discovered that the Sketch style was missing.

➖ Judging by the app's denoscription in the system itself, Apple simply removed the style from the Image Playground functionality, though the company's website still mentions it.

🤷‍♂ It isn't clear why Apple decided to eliminate the sketch option from ‌Image Playground‌, or if sketch or other styles will be added in the future. As it stands, ‌Image Playground‌ in iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and ‌macOS Sequoia‌ 15.2 will only include animation and illustration as style options.

📱 Third betas of iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2 to developers

🔜 A corresponding iOS 18.2 public beta with these changes will likely be released later this week, and Apple confirmed that the software update will be released to the public in December.

📱 iOS 18.2 is compatible with the iPhone XS series and newer, but Apple Intelligence features require an iPhone 15 Pro model or any iPhone 16.

☁️ A New Setting for the Camera Control Button
In the Settings app under Display & Brightness, there is now a toggle for "Require Screen On." When this setting is turned on, you can only launch the Camera app or a supported third-party camera app with the Camera Control button when the iPhone's screen is turned on.

🖼 Tweaked Video Player in Photos
Many users after the 'oohs and ahhs' got finaly used to updated Photos app. iOS 18.2 beta 3 introduces a tweaked video player that takes up more of the screen. This change eliminates the thick borders around videos that appear on earlier iOS 18 versions, meaning you no longer have to tap on a video for full-screen playback.

Starting with iPadOS 18.2 beta 3, the navigation bar in the TV app can be customized, according to the info from 9to5Mac.

🚘 Redesigned Next-Generation CarPlay Icons
Redesigned icons for the new Climate and Media apps that will be available on next-generation CarPlay. Apple's website continues to say that the first vehicles with next-generation CarPlay support will "arrive in 2024," but there are still no vehicles that support the system.

💨 AirDrop Icon
AirDrop icon in the share sheet now appears dark in Dark Mode, rather than staying white.

📝 Writing Tools
They are now available on the first page of the text clipboard menu, making it much faster to launch Apple Intelligence.

🖥️ Apple explained why the Mac mini's power button is located under the case

💬 During an interview, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak and Vice President John Ternus explained why the decision to move the power button to the bottom of M4 Mac mini was made.

They responded with two points:

1️⃣ First, people are more likely to put the Mac mini into sleep mode rather than turn it off, and if there is a need for the button, it's perfectly feasible to reach it with a finger, albeit by lifting the computer a bit; One senior executive event noted:

I can't even remember the last time I turned on a Mac.

2️⃣ Second, the computer's internals are very compact, and a physical button in the place of the ports would be almost impossible to fit, but there's a separate and safe place for it at the bottom that won't conflict with other components of the device.

📆 All news sources are trumpeting an important update – eight new emoji will be released in 2025. How did users used to live without:

🤔 Unicode is reporting new emoji for 2025 and 2026, not looking at Genmoji – generating own emoji – in case Apple Intelligence does launch.

📱 Speaking of emoji, in the publicly available iOS 18.1 update, the clipboard emoji have gotten larger, harder to search for, and, often by accident, you can tap on the stickers that appear in the left corner of the screen when you don't need to. Or is the new emoji format, on the other hand, more convenient for you?

🏠 Apple is almost in the smart home already

📰 Two pieces of news at once from two reputable sources.

1️⃣ Mark Gurman says that Apple will release a smart home control screen in spring 2025. The device will run on a new OS combining elements of watchOS and iOS StandBy Mode, with a dynamic interface that adapts to distance. The main control is via Siri voice commands using App Intents technology, although the screen supports touch controls.

🔍 The gadget is the size of two iPhone screens (6”, roughly square) and has speakers, a FaceTime camera and a battery. It will support Safari, Music, Notes and other apps, but without access to the App Store. The home screen can host widgets and Apple Home controls. Security is emphasized, including video and audio doorbell functions, as well as integration with video cameras and security systems.

2️⃣ At the same time, Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple plans to enter the market of IP cameras for smart home with HomeKit support. Mass production will start in 2026, Goertek will be the exclusive assembler. The cameras will integrate with Apple's ecosystem via Wi-Fi or Matter.

🧭 Apple gears up to launch a new AirTag four years after the first model

📰 Bloomberg reports that the new version – code-named B589 — will look similar to the current model, but offer better range, bolster the onboard wireless chip and improve privacy.

🕵️‍♂️ That includes making it more difficult for someone to remove the speaker from the AirTag. Since the device launched in 2021, some people have unfortunately used the product as a tool for stalking — and removing the speaker makes it less likely for someone to discover a hidden AirTag.

👩‍⚖️ Apple is still contending with lawsuits over the device, and it’s in everyone’s interest to make the new model more tamper-proof.

📺 Apple may be looking into developing its own TV

📺 The company is considering creating a branded TV, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggested. Apple has been thinking about releasing an Apple TV since Steve Jobs, but the company has decided to revisit the idea only now.

🏠 It's still not entirely clear what new Apple TV can offer: devices from LG, Samsung and other brands already offer support for AirPlay, HomeKit and Apple TV+. Most likely, Apple's main advantage will be their branded aesthetics and integration with the ecosystem, including other smart home devices.
