「中期翻新列車」前身係第一代電氣化火車，由 1982 年起服務新界東乘客往返市區，設計時每列車係 3 卡一組，可以組成 3 卡、6 卡、9 卡、12 卡列車
初時喺英國生產，屬「3094 批次」嘅車廂，同當地嘅近郊火車一樣需要司機（Driver）及列車長（Train Guard）一同控制，車上只有部分範圍屬頭等，並設有洗手間，不過就針對香港過境嘅人流而有行李卡間隔
未幾，不少人口遷入新界東，各個新市鎮算係平均分佈於九廣鐵路沿綫，全程車亦只係三十幾分鐘，像當時英國一樣要分開 3 卡車、6 卡車服務範圍嘅模式，明顯唔適合香港
因此後來喺地下鐵路九龍灣車廠組裝嘅「K03、K05 批次」車廂，取消咗洗手間、行李架同埋部分座位，但每個長 23 米嘅車廂每邊只有三對車門，確實妨礙上落車人流，亦令乘客只聚集於車門通道
所以喺 1996 年九鐵批出合約，將所有列車重組為 29 列 12 卡車廂，改為五道車門、拆除列車中間嘅駕駛室亦補強車體結構，並翻新車內裝潢，在增加載客量同時加設多用途空間、電子顯示牌及凸字金屬牌，成為本港最早嘅無障礙交通之一 ♿️
往後一段時間，「中期翻新列車」改用咗唔同嘅行車訊號，再轉為自動行車，車門又陸續改為電動操作，使列車開行時可以暢順啲，東鐵綫喺繁忙時間可開出嘅班次，就會有稍稍增加嘅空間
