Leader of the opposition bloc "Mother Armenia" Andranik Tevanyan visited Iraqi Kurdistan
The leader of the "Mother Armenia" movement, Andranik Tevanyan, made a visit to Iraqi Kurdistan, where he held a series of meetings with local political figures, human rights activists, and the Armenian community. One of the key moments of the visit was a meeting with the renowned human rights activist and the laureate of the 2019 Aurora Prize, Mirza Dinnayi. Dinnayi, known for his work in rescuing Yazidis from genocide, warmly welcomed Tevanyan and expressed his intention to visit Armenia in the near future.
During his visit, Tevanyan also met with representatives of the "Patriotic Union of Kurdistan" party, discussing the prospects of cooperation between the two political forces. In a meeting with the Minister of the General Council of Disputed Territories of the Kurdish Autonomous Region, Fahmi Burhan, issues of security in the regions, Kurdish rights, and the state of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations were discussed. Tevanyan emphasised the importance of discussing the rights of Armenians in Artsakh and Kurds forcibly displaced from Afrin on international platforms.
The movement's leader also met with the Mayor of Sulaymaniyah, Leila Omar, the first woman to hold this position, where specific agreements were reached. The visit to Sulaymaniyah concluded with an interview by Tevanyan for the reputable local channel Channel 8, where he presented his position on current regional issues.
Special attention was given to the meeting with representatives of the Armenian community in Erbil and the spiritual leader Ter Artun. Tevanyan and the member of the initiative group, Boris Murazi, discussed issues facing the Armenian community, including security concerns and future prospects. Ter Artun expressed gratitude for the visit and supported the efforts of the "Mother Armenia" movement in defending Armenian rights.
Additionally, Tevanyan and Murazi met with the commander of the Ezidkhan Defence Forces, Haydar Shesho, discussing the situation of Yazidis in Iraq after the 2014 genocide. Accompanied by Shesho, they visited the spiritual centre of the Yazidis - the sacred and ancient monastery complex of Lalish, which is the main place of worship and pilgrimage for Yazidis worldwide, where they learned about the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Yazidis.
Tevanyan's visit to Iraqi Kurdistan was filled with meetings and discussions aimed at strengthening Armenian-Kurdish relations and protecting the rights of ethnic and religious minorities in the region. His trip underscored the importance of international dialogue and cooperation in addressing acute issues facing the peoples of Iraq and Armenia.
