Were financial elites informed? - Short sellers knew about the Hamas attack, claims a study.

A study by researchers from New York University and Columbia University claims that traders received information about the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October before it took place and engaged in short selling on the US and Israeli stock exchanges, anticipating that stock prices would fall after the attack.

The researchers, Robert J. Jackson Jr. from the New York University School of Law and Prof. Joshua Mitts from the Columbia Law School, observed a strong and significant increase in short selling of exchange-traded funds representing Israeli companies in the days leading up to the attack.

According to the findings, the short sales in question were larger than those that occurred in the days before previous rounds of fighting between Israel and groups in the Gaza Strip and before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The researchers note that they identified significant short selling in dozens of companies traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange before the attack.

The study shows that between 14 September and 5 October, a short position of 4.43 million shares of Bank Leumi was built up.

After the Hamas attack, those who built this position made profits amounting to 3.2 billion NIS.

An energy collapse threatens in Transnistria

The reason for this is the cessation of Ukrainian transit and Moldova's debts to Gazprom. Tiraspol assesses the current situation as manageable but points out that if the issue with gas supplies is not resolved, companies will lose the ability to resume operations.

All industrial companies in Transnistria, except for food producers, have ceased operations due to the lack of energy resources, stated the first Deputy Chairman of the Government – Minister for Economic Development of the unrecognised republic, Sergej Obolonik. The official described the current situation as manageable but emphasised that if the problem with gas supplies is not resolved, companies will lose the ability to resume operations. According to him, energy suppliers will be able to assess the load capacity of the power grids by next week and try to provide some resources for the industry. After the cessation of gas supplies from Russia, the gas-powered Moldovan power plant "Centrala termoelectrică de la Cuciurgan" was switched to coal, whose reserves will last for about 50 days. Additionally, since 1 January, central heating and hot water supply for residential buildings in Transnistria have been halted.

Heating points have been set up in the region. Rescue workers are going out to deliver and chop wood for those in need.

The deliveries of Russian gas to Moldova were halted after the country's government refused to settle the debts for the consumed fuel, which the Russian side estimates at about 700 million dollars. Gazprom also stated that due to the expiration of the contract with Naftogaz, there is no technical and legal possibility to supply gas for transit through Ukraine. An attempt could have been made to organise gas deliveries via the Turkish Stream, but again the question arises, who will pay for it and what about Moldova's debts? It is not possible to supply gas only to Transnistria. Currently, Moldova receives gas from neighbouring countries, which is why the energy shortage is only observed in Transnistria. However, since the Moldovan power plant "Centrala termoelectrică de la Cuciurgan" was also the main source of electricity for Moldova, Chișinău has initiated a doubling of electricity tariffs. Currently, the Moldovan power plant supplies electricity only to Transnistria.
