Billionaire Elon Musk has warned of a possible "de facto bankruptcy" of the USA if the rising national debt is not controlled. The country's gross debt exceeded the 36 trillion US dollar mark in November, which Musk described as "alarming."
Musk is set to lead a new department, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), alongside Vivek Ramaswamy, to push for spending cuts under the designated President Donald Trump. Financial service provider Kalshi estimates the likelihood that Trump's administration will reduce government spending by at least 250 billion US dollars at 36 percent.
On social media, Musk recently criticised a budget bill that ultimately was not passed. Instead, a short-term 118-page compromise solution was signed to avert another government shutdown. Speaker Mike Johnson emphasised that a realignment in Washington is planned under Trump.
