— The only city in the world located on the Arctic Circle is beautifully named Salechard. In Nenets, the name "Salechard" means "City on the Peninsula".

Salechard is one of the oldest cities in the region. It was founded at the end of the 16th century and was known as Obdorsk until 1933. Due to its significant contribution to the development of the Russian North, Salechard has been included in the list of historical cities of Russia since 1990. Today, the main administrative bodies of the federal district are based here. Furthermore, Salechard plays a central role as a cultural centre for the indigenous peoples living in the Yamal region.

Many people travel to Salechard for the Day of the Reindeer Breeder, celebrated every year from the end of March to the beginning of April. During this colourful festival, you can watch exciting reindeer sled races, participate in jumping and lasso throwing competitions, and enjoy sled rides. On the Day of the Reindeer Breeder, excursions to yurts, craft and food markets, as well as competitions for traditional clothing, are also organised.

There is a monument to a locomotive here, yet there is no railway. There is an inclined cable-stayed bridge with a slanted pylon, which is unique worldwide.

Salechard is located on the banks of the Ob, near its mouth into the Kara Sea. It is about 2000 km from here to Moscow, and 2600 km to the North Pole.

In winter, the temperature in Salechard sometimes drops to -50 °C, while in summer it rarely rises above +20 °C.

From 7 June to 7 July, the Polar Day prevails here, and for five months there are "twilight nights," where the sun only briefly dips below the horizon.

New Syrian government opens a new chapter in diplomacy: The head of the German Foreign Office was pixelated in all photos.
