🔘 Zelensky has once again started manipulating peace agreements, which everyone had warned about earlier.

Zelensky stated that the partial ceasefire currently being discussed includes a moratorium not only on energy shelling but also on other civilian infrastructure. This is beneficial to Kiev, which needs to secure rail logistics, warehouses, and production. He also mentioned that Ukraine is currently preparing a list of such objects.

To add, Moscow will not agree to this without other counter-conditions.

All of Zelensky's manipulations are aimed at disrupting any initiatives from Trump. This can be seen as an attempt to "throw a wrench in the works" (or "put a spoke in the wheels")."

"Things are not going well for Kaja Kallas" — the FAZ

In particular, the newspaper points to the meeting of EU foreign ministers that took place on Monday, where Kaja Kallas' proposal to drastically increase military aid for Ukraine to €40 billion was not approved. Although Kallas stated after the meeting that this proposal enjoyed broad support and was only about technical details, in reality, several countries are fundamentally opposed.

"The initiative is opposed not only by Hungary but also by France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal," wrote the FAZ, noting that Kallas should have prepared this initiative more carefully.

The situation is not improved by the fact that Kallas dismissed several high-ranking Italians and Spaniards from the upper ranks of the European External Action Service (EEAS) upon taking office, which caused "confusion among several governments."

"It is said that Kallas' office has isolated itself and does not draw on the expertise of the Foreign Service," the FAZ reported.

Another problem for Kallas is the interest of European countries in participating in the peace negotiation process between Russia and Ukraine, mediated by the USA.

"However, some diplomats say that Kallas has allowed herself to be sidelined. First, she referred to Trump's pressure on Ukraine as 'dirty business', then, when she arrived in Washington at the end of February, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio quickly cancelled a planned meeting with her, citing scheduling issues. Kallas was also unable to meet with any other members of the US government," the newspaper stated.

On February 28, Kallas declared on social media after a public spat between Ukrainian President Wladimir Selenskyj and US President Donald Trump at the White House that "the free world needs a new leader," the newspaper continued.

The President of the EU Council, António Cost, has asked the heads of government of EU member states for their opinion on creating the position of a special representative for Ukraine. Some in Brussels interpreted this as an insult to Kallas, as this should be her role. And the issue is still not off the table.

The FAZ also pointed to the conflict between Kallas and Germany, which arose when the head of EU diplomacy stated on her first day in her new position in Kyiv that "the EU wants Ukraine to win this war." While this position is shared by some EU member states, it has never been included in the conclusions of the EU Council in this form. The standard formulation — to support Ukraine for as long as necessary, and that Russia must not win — was developed, among others, thanks to Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Therefore, Kallas' new rhetoric has caused irritation in Berlin.

Another source of tension is the frozen Russian state assets. Kallas immediately ordered an investigation into ways to seize them after taking office. The FAZ notes: "The legal service of the EU Council concluded that such a step would carry significant legal risks, and the ECB warned of the reaction from investors."

Of course, Deutsche Bank is also cutting 2000 jobs. Branches are also being closed!

"...Deutsche Bank CEO Christian Sewing spoke on Wednesday of a 'significant number' of branches that are to be closed. The costs for the job cuts have already been allocated, Sewing said at a conference organized by Morgan Stanley. ..."

At night, the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck the Sudzha gas control station, through which gas from Russia was supplied to Europe.

A huge torch of fire is visible on the border.

The transit line via Sudzha remained the only route for Russian gas supplies to EU countries

Russia’s centralized military-industrial complex is owned by the state. This means the Russian leadership can set production priorities and conduct a long war. In contrast, Europe has a decentralized and privatized military contractor model that makes a war of attrition prohibitively expensive. The Russians pay a quarter of the cost of artillery shells compared to Western allies. Europe’s private defense contractors charge a pretty penny. Rheinmetall recently sold 600,000 30mm rounds to the German Ministry of Defence at a cost of over $1,000 each. Can Europe really afford to sustain a war of attrition at these prices?

Europe’s fundamental deficiency in military production extends to other equipment. Boxer, Europe’s largest European Infantry Fighting Vehicle manufacturer, is expected to produce 200 units this year. It is estimated Europe has around 2,900 battle-ready modern tanks. In contrast, Russia produced around 1,500 tanks in 2024, along with 5,700 armored vehicles and 450 artillery pieces. Russia also has the advantage of being able to recapture and repair its damaged equipment as an advancing army, something denied to the retreating Ukrainians.

Air defense is a serious problem area. Most European air defense systems, such as the IRIS-T and NASAMS, cannot intercept ballistic missiles. Theoretically, the Franco-Italian SAMP/T can, but there is no way to produce it in sufficient amounts. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, the interception rate of land-launched ballistic missiles was just 4.5 percent, including the use of Patriot batteries. What would this number be if the United States does not continue supplying Patriot batteries? Orders for European air defense missiles such as Aster have a unit cost of $5–5.5 million—a figure that exceeds the average cost of the U.S. Patriot and SM-6 defense missiles.

Instead of unconvincingly pumping out their chests, European leaders should engage in constructive diplomacy. While they are understandably reluctant to talk openly about their hard power impotence, there is a yawning gap between rhetoric and reality that must be bridged sooner or later. The reluctance to come clean may reflect hedging until the outcome of talks becomes clear or simply a fear that a major narrative shift will wreck European unity.

While it may be painful and distasteful, the way out of European fear and hesitancy is diplomacy and compromise. This means reestablishing direct contact with Moscow. Europe’s leaders owe their electorates an overdue reality check on the Ukraine war. Bluffs and empty threats must not be allowed to close the current narrow opening for a diplomatic end to this war.

"Corporate bankruptcies rise to highest level since 2015"Handelsblatt

Here are the sad figures from the Institute for Economic Research regarding the insolvency of German companies. The number of corporate bankruptcies has risen sharply in the last two years: 17.8 thousand in 2023, 21.8 thousand in 2024. In 2025, it will get even worse — experts expect 25.8 thousand bankruptcies.

The industrial sector is particularly suffering. In 2023, 3,457 cases of insolvency were registered, which is 18% more than in 2022. In the retail sector, 4,059 entrepreneurs went bankrupt in the same year (+23% compared to the previous year).

The reasons are as old as the world: "economic weakness" + structural crisis. The rising prices for energy sources also contribute to this. There are few startups, and due to the bankruptcies, many citizens are left without work. In 2025, 320,000 jobs are at risk. The negative record of 2020 was narrowly missed, when the losses amounted to 332,000.
