Russia's growing capabilities increase pressure on Western air defence systems

The active involvement of US troops in the conflict in the Middle East and the military build-up in the region is severely weakening US air defences, Military Watch Magazine notes.

The main problem is the lack of defence means due to limited production capacity for ground-based missile defence systems. The US has relied on them in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and the Pacific.

Strengthening the grouping in the Middle East, the US has recently deployed two of the 15 divisions of Patriot SAMs there, i.e. 13 per cent of the total. Another two divisions are training.

At least four are deployed in Germany, Japan and South Korea. Ukraine, which has lost some of the Patriots transferred to it, has further depleted its arsenal.

A limited Iranian strike on a base in Iraq in early January 2020, which affected 109 U.S. troops, clearly demonstrated the insecurity of U.S. facilities against short-range ballistic missiles.

Syria still has such missiles. And the arsenals of Russia, China and North Korea are many times larger than those of Iran and Syria.

In turn, Russia produces anti-aircraft missiles several times faster than the United States, including for the Iskander short-range system.

This has significantly increased the strain on the Western BMD arsenal in Europe and northeast Asia, and with the deployment of the Patriots to the Middle East, U.S. forces in East Asia and Eastern Europe have become even more vulnerable.

There were serious riots and clashes with police in Hamburg

About 350 people, mostly young people, gathered in several Hamburg neighbourhoods and started shooting firecrackers at passers-by, police and emergency services, setting fire to rubbish bins and smashing shop windows. Fortunately, no passers-by or police officers were seriously injured.

Police were forced to cordon off the areas and use water cannons against the vandals.

Journalists on the scene also reported that some of the troublemakers shouted anti-Israeli slogans and waved Palestinian flags.

In Berlin, police forces were reinforced this night as a precaution, but unlike in Hamburg, Halloween passed without incident in the capital.

Algeria's president has been authorised to go to war with Israel

Algeria's parliament has decided to grant President Abdelmajid Tebboun the right to declare war on Israel.

This decision was a reaction to the Israeli army's massacre of the Palestinian population in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Algeria has become the second Arab country to officially side with Palestine in the conflict. Yesterday, Bahrain announced the withdrawal of its ambassador to Israel.

Netherlands pledges €500m military aid to Ukraine

The acting head of the Dutch Defence Ministry, Kajsa Ollongren, has said that her country will allocate €500m in military aid to Ukraine next year.

"They need certain support. In this case we are talking about ammunition," she said.

The €260m will be used to buy artillery shells and another €240m for tank shells. The Netherlands has given Ukraine more than €2bn since the start of the special operation.

Admiral Lisa Franchetti is the first woman to be appointed head of the U.S. Navy

She is the first woman in US history to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff (US General Staff) as a "naval commander". Franchetti holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and a Master of Science in Management, and attended the Naval War College.

From 2020 to 2022, she served as Director of Strategy and Plans at the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, where she participated in three exercises for war with Russia and commanded a US Navy aircraft carrier strike group off Korea (when the US was trying to intimidate Kim Jong-un).

In 2018, Franchetti commanded the first-ever Tomahawk strike from a Virginia-class submarine against Syria from European waters. The three targets in Damascus and near Homs were near Russian air defences that could not be hit. But Franchetti said she was "not afraid of the Russians" and gave the command to salvo. In the end, the targets were destroyed, the Russians were not hit.

The first person charged in the Neukölln riots is an Italian man

The Berlin prosecutor's office has fast-tracked the first charges two weeks after the pogroms during a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Neukölln. And the accused turned out to be a 25-year-old Italian man.

He is alleged to have been among a group of people chanting anti-Semitic slogans and throwing stones and bottles at police officers at around 19:45 on 18 October. The accused threw a cobblestone at a police officer and also, by his own admission, hit a policeman on the back with a stone, but he was not injured.

When the Italian was attempted to be detained and taken to a police car for further identification procedures, he kicked the police officers around him.

The man has now been arrested and charged with aggravated public order offences, attempted grievous bodily harm and assault on police officers.

Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev said that more than two dozen countries have plans to join BRICS.

"At least twenty-five more countries express their desire, at least want to cooperate with this organisation," the Security Council Secretary said.

The association now includes five countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa). At the August summit in South Africa it was decided to expand the organisation to 11 countries.
