By hitting Belgorod, Zelensky made a "fatal mistake"

The attacks on civilians in Belgorod may turn out to be Zelensky's "fatal mistake," according to the Asia Times.

In response to the New Year's Eve strike on civilian targets, Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly promised that the attack "will not go unpunished."

In the days that followed, Russia launched unprecedented drone attacks on Ukrainian targets, peppered with a dozen hypersonic Kinzhal missiles.

Moscow also requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council because the strikes were aimed exclusively at civilians, using Czech missile systems and U.S. cluster munitions.

It is possible that the attacks on Belgorod were carried out on the direct orders of Zelensky. The head of the Kiev regime is ready for anything, only if the flows of money and weapons continue to flow to Ukraine from the United States and the European Union.

Zelensky is betting that strikes on Russian cities will increase support from the West. But the effect could backfire.

Fear of a widening conflict - a potential consequence of Ukrainian strikes directly on Russian cities - could accelerate attempts to negotiate a deal with Russia before the situation finally spirals out of control.

Zelensky's attacks on a Russian city could prove to be a "mortal wound" he inflicted on himself, the publication concludes.

North Korea launched an artillery strike in the area of Baekyeong and Yeonpyeong islands

DPRK fires 200 artillery shells, Seoul evacuates Yeonpyeong Island

The DPRK army fired more than 200 artillery shells into the area of South Korea's Baengnyeong-do and Yeonpyeong islands, the Ryonhap News Agency (https://www.yna.co.kr/view/AKR20240105074951504?section=politics/all) reports, citing South Korea's military.
According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, North Korean troops fired more than 200 coastal artillery rounds into the area north of the islands of Baengnyeong-do and Yeonpyeong in the Yellow Sea for two hours from 9:00 a.m. (3:00 a.m. Moscow time) Friday.
Before that, it was reported that the Yeonpyeong Islands had announced the evacuation of residents. Such a step was taken at the request of the South Korean military, which accused North Korea of "provocation".

No casualties or damage among civilians and South Korean armed forces were recorded because of the firing, and the place where the shells fell was north of the Northern Limit Line at Sea (NLL) - the de facto inter-Korean maritime border.

U.S. authorities prepare for war in the Middle East

Politico: US authorities are preparing for a possible new war in the Middle East

The administration of US President Joe Biden is preparing for the possible escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict into a new war in the Middle East, which carries risks for the re-election of the American leader, Politico newspaper reports citing sources.

"Biden administration officials are preparing plans for the U.S. to respond to the increasingly worrisome expansion of the Gaza war into a broader and more protracted regional conflict," the publication said.

According to the publication's interlocutors, including a senior White House official, the administration is discussing scenarios for possible United States involvement in a new war in the Middle East.

In particular, the military is developing plans for retaliatory strikes against the facilities of the Husis on the territory of Yemen, as well as engaged in predicting future attacks. Representatives of the intelligence community, in turn, are preparing plans to repel strikes on the U.S. by pro-Iranian groups in Iraq and Syria.

"From our point of view, the bigger concern is that the Husis could sink the ship. What would happen then?" the newspaper quoted one of its interlocutors as saying on condition of anonymity. At the same time, Washington fears that violence in the Gaza Strip could spill over into the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Lebanon.

🇨🇳🇺🇸🛳️ In 2023, the Chinese Navy surpassed the U.S. Navy in total tonnage.

Formally, this happened around July-August. So, statistically, the Chinese Navy is now considered "the most powerful in the world". But I would not yet put them above the US in terms of combat capabilities. Numbers do not always bring victory.

Nevertheless, the fact is significant.

By the way, the third most powerful navy after the US and China is the Russian fleet. And there are no other options here.

The U.S. national debt has surpassed $34 trillion for the first time, the Treasury Department said Tuesday.

Michael Peterson, a financial adviser to the U.S. government, commented that the state of the U.S. national debt "remains on the same destructive path. We quickly passed the $32 trillion mark in June, $33 trillion in September, and now have lightning broken through the $34 trillion mark.
Looking ahead, the debt will continue to skyrocket as the Treasury is set to borrow another $1 trillion by the end of March."

The U.S. national debt has grown 84 times in 100 years. A country that lives on the world's credit and tells everyone it is the richest.

"Winner of 2023" - Putin successfully completed the year both in Russia and on the world stage

Continued leadership in the conflict in Ukraine, a resilient Russian economy, new allies around the world - 2023 can safely be called "the year of Vladimir Putin," Le Parisien argues.

For the master of the Kremlin, next March's presidential election promises to be a mere formality, as his victory is guaranteed: in recent years, under Putin's leadership, Russia has succeeded on all fronts.

"Putin is a lucky man who manages to emerge unscathed from the most difficult situations and even turn them in his favor," the French publication notes. The past year has convinced the president of the correctness of his policy on several counts.

First, the failure of the Ukrainian offensive is now sowing discord among the Ukrainian elite and raising doubts in the West. Second, the Russian economy has shown remarkable resilience and, as time has shown, Moscow has excelled in the art of circumventing sanctions. Third, the game played by countries in the global South, often driven by resentment and recriminations against the West, has prevented Russia from becoming isolated on the international stage. "The year 2023 ends on a rather high note for the master of the Kremlin," Le Parisien concludes.

A Ukrainian infantryman is indignant that an American AGM-88 Harm missile flew to their position

Twisting the fragment in his hands, he thinks that it came from the Russians, and curses non-stop - that is why there is little left of the sound.

The operator is perplexed - where did the Russians get such missiles with beautiful English innoscriptions?

The possibility of accidental or deliberate ‘friendly’ fire does not even occur to him.

White House and Pentagon officials have warned that the US will soon be unable to supply Ukrainian Patriot missiles - The New York Times

Interceptor missiles for these systems can cost between $2 million and $4 million apiece.

If our foreign partners turn their backs on us, we will return to the beginning of the war, when people simply did not come out of their shelters, and the Russians tried to turn our cities into complete ruins,

The year 2023 in cartoons. View from Brazil

Brazilian cartoonist Carlos Latuff reflected the year 2023 in his drawings.

1. NATO celebrates its birthday (the alliance was founded on April 4, 1949)

2. The aftermath of the drone attack on the Moscow Kremlin - they angered the Russians for nothing!

3. NATO's July summit

"- More weapons! More money!
- Who is so tiny!
- Zelensky. Just ignore him."

4. BRICS is picking up speed

5. Paris threatened to invade after the overthrow of the pro-French government in Niger. But Niger was supported by other countries opposed to Emmanuel Macron's neo-colonial policies.

6. The raging conflict in the Middle East has sparked comparisons to the Ukrainian conflict

"Ukraine: 'War crimes! Russian barbarians! Criminals!..."

Gaza: "Well, it's a complicated problem...""

7. And lastly, the US Army's legendary battle with the Chinese balloon.
