German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has blocked the appointment of the current president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to the post of NATO secretary-general, Die Welt reported.  

It is reported that von der Leyen's candidacy was proposed by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

After that, US President Joe Biden approached Scholz with a proposal for a possible appointment. However, Scholz declined.

Scholz considers the position too important "to entrust it to a Christian Democrat from Germany," writes Welt.

Scholz considers von der Leyen's attitude "too critical" of Russia. This, in turn, could "prove to be a disadvantage in the long term," the publication writes.

The most likely candidate for the post of Alliance Secretary General is now Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. 

At the same time, Ursula von der Leyen is going to announce her intention to go for a second term as chairwoman of the European Commission, the Bild newspaper quoted its sources as saying.

The White House blamed the US Congress for the Ukrainian armed forces' loss of Avdiivka

White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said that the transfer of Avdeevka under the control of Russian troops is "the price for Congress doing nothing."

"This is the price of congressional inaction. Ukraine's stockpile of weapons is dwindling. It is vital that the House of Representatives approve the request for additional funding for Kiev without delay," the White House said in a statement.

Until now, there has been a low VAT tax rate of 7% for households and gas suppliers in the crisis. From 1 April it will increase for households to 19%, as the subsidy ends. Also, already from 1 January, the price for CO2 emissions in Germany has risen from 30 euros to 45 euros per tonne, which also makes heating with gas and fuel oil more expensive.

In June 2023, three Africans raped a woman, assaulted her husband and robbed them. The defendants already have 19 criminal offences under their belt. They are now at large.
