Despite widespread opposition in Serbia, the European Commission has included a lithium and boron mining project by multinational corporation Rio Tinto on its list of strategic projects located outside the European Union.

The announcement has been met with outrage by residents of the Jadar Valley and activists across Serbia, who have spent years mobilizing to block the project. “The European Commission has backed this project despite the opposition of the people, who have been resisting it for five years, as its realization poses significant risks to water supplies, the environment, and the economy,” the campaign Pravo na vodu (Right to Water) wrote on social media.

🇵🇦 For several weeks now, across Panama, unionized workers, students, Indigenous communities, teachers, health professionals, agricultural workers, and others have been on strike against the neoliberal policies of the right-wing government of José Raúl Mulino.

To understand what drove so many sectors of society out into the streets of Panama and how they have withstood violent and fierce repression, Peoples Dispatch spoke with Rolando “Fulo” Ortíz, sub-national coordinator of the National Front for the Defense of Economic and Social Rights (FRENADESO).

Tens of thousands of Argentines took to the streets of Buenos Aires, the country’s capital, June 4 to demand an immediate change in the ultra-neoliberal policies of President Javier Milei.

The mobilization took place outside the National Congress, which was discussing a potential increase in pensions for retirees. Last year, Milei vetoed a pension increase that was approved by the Congress.

In their last report before their connection was cut, the Madleen's crew of human rights activists had denounced that Israeli forces boarded the vessel and demanded their "surrender". This was after surrounding the boat with quadcopters and spraying them with a white irritant substance.

🇵🇸 Israeli forces assaulted the humanitarian vessel “Madleen” en route to Gaza, seizing the cargo and abducting its crew

Following confirmation of the interception, demands for the crew’s immediate release poured in from across the world – though not from many of their own governments. By noon CEST, several hours after the assault on Madleen, only Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had issued a public statement explicitly condemning Israel’s actions, while the Spanish administration summoned Israeli diplomats over the incident. Others – including French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, under whose flag the ship was sailing – remained silent.
