🇵🇦 For several weeks now, across Panama, unionized workers, students, Indigenous communities, teachers, health professionals, agricultural workers, and others have been on strike against the neoliberal policies of the right-wing government of José Raúl Mulino.

To understand what drove so many sectors of society out into the streets of Panama and how they have withstood violent and fierce repression, Peoples Dispatch spoke with Rolando “Fulo” Ortíz, sub-national coordinator of the National Front for the Defense of Economic and Social Rights (FRENADESO).

According to the text of the proclamation, the intent of this newest policy is to “protect its citizens from aliens who intend to commit terrorist attacks, threaten our national security, espouse hateful ideology, or otherwise exploit the immigration laws for malevolent purposes.”

Trade unions, health and housing organizations, and peace groups across Britain are preparing for a major national demonstration against the Labour government’s austerity measures.

Since taking office in 2024, Starmer’s cabinet has announced several policies that threaten people’s livelihoods, including cuts to winter fuel support for the elderly, the continuation of the two-child benefit cap, and reductions in support payments for people with disabilities.

Tens of thousands of Argentines took to the streets of Buenos Aires, the country’s capital, June 4 to demand an immediate change in the ultra-neoliberal policies of President Javier Milei.

The mobilization took place outside the National Congress, which was discussing a potential increase in pensions for retirees. Last year, Milei vetoed a pension increase that was approved by the Congress.

Since Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake was elected in September 2024, he has made four state visits. First to India, then to China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Vietnam. This itinerary says a lot about the state of the international economy and debt-saddled Sri Lanka’s options within it.

🚨🚨The Freedom Flotilla "Madleen" is currently under attack by Israeli forces in international waters. In their last report before their connection was cut, the Madleen's crew of human rights activists had denounced that Israeli forces boarded the vessel and demanded their "surrender". This was after surrounding the boat with quadcopters and spraying them with a white irritant substance.

🇵🇸 Israeli forces assaulted the humanitarian vessel “Madleen” en route to Gaza, seizing the cargo and abducting its crew

Following confirmation of the interception, demands for the crew’s immediate release poured in from across the world – though not from many of their own governments. By noon CEST, several hours after the assault on Madleen, only Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had issued a public statement explicitly condemning Israel’s actions, while the Spanish administration summoned Israeli diplomats over the incident. Others – including French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, under whose flag the ship was sailing – remained silent.

🇵🇸In a blatant violation of international law, Israeli forces intercepted the “Madleen” in international waters and abducted the 12 crew members, while waging a propaganda campaign against them.

As of now, lawyers from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition have been unable to establish contact with the crew members.

In response to widespread international outrage at the blatant violation of international law, Israeli officials and media outlets went on the offensive, launching a smear campaign demonizing the activists on the flotilla, particularly Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, accusing them of “antisemitism”.

☀️ "Freedom Ride" caravan against Trump's immigration policies kicks off in Newark

Dozens of faith leaders gathered outside of the recently inaugurated ICE Detention Center, Delaney Hall, in Newark, New Jersey to kick off the “Freedom Ride” caravan. This caravan of activists and organizers will stop at several southern cites and end up in Jena, Louisiana, outside of the ICE facility where Palestine activist and Columbia graduate Mahmoud Khalil is being held by the Trump administration.

The “Freedom Ride,” organized by IFCO/Pastors for Peace, highlights not only the attacks on immigrants and free speech, but the growing movement against Trump’s policies which activists argue are attacking basic democratic rights in the United States.

Iran condemned a fresh round of US sanctions on its citizens and commercial entities, calling them a reflection of the US’s long-standing hostility towards the country and its people.

Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the sanctions as a flagrant violation of international laws and another attempt to deny Iranians their fundamental rights and increase their hardships.
