nftables: how to do connection rate limiting

I want to limit how many times per minute an IP can attempt to connect to my machine's SSH port. The examples provided at https://wiki.nftables.org/wiki-nftables/index.php/Meters don't work with my version of nftables 0.9.1 on kernel 5.2.7.

Specifically, it seems that in the map I need to put a literal colon (:) and then a value after it in the 'type' line when creating a map. I guess this specifies what the ipv4_addr and inet_service are supposed to map _to_.

How does one actually do this? I want to do more or less exactly what the wiki shows.

Also, random nftables gripe, why is it called ipv4_addr and inet_service in the map, but called 'ip saddr' and 'tcp dport' in the rule?

Problems with dual monitors using an Asus laptop

Hi guys! I installed linux mint in my laptop and everything works out of the box except when i try to use a second monitor... I admit that my laptop is pretty bad (it doesn't have any graphic card, and its cpu isn't that great) but i don't have any other problem.

When i connect a new screen, some black artifacts appear on the screen and my mouse cursor completely bugs out (it divides into 3/4 cursors and flickers).

I don't think that this issue is linked to linux mint because i couldn't find anyone with the same issue via Google.

My second monitor is connected to my laptop with an adaptor (DVI -> HDMI), could it be the cause of this problem ???

Edit: My cpu is an Intel Pentium if that can help.

See wifi password in GNU/Linux

If using NetworkManager(Package);

goto /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/

as root and read the respective text file name as the wifi name. You will find it in the line "psk=" under \[wifi-security\] section.

Though you need to be root to read those files.

Update:: For those of you who say "We can see password in the router config page" Its useful to see the router's password only if you own the router. This wont be helpful for in case like, you goto your friend's house, he connects you to his wifi but wont tell you the password.

For wicd (I believe parrot sec uses wicd)

goto /etc/wicd
and open wireless-settings.conf

Looking to Buy: System76 Serval WS - Ubuntu | Should I Do It?

Hey all,


I am in the market for a new laptop. I am a 10 year OS X user who has recently been dual booting ubuntu on my 2010 Macbook Pro. It is time for this machine to retire and I would love to just move over to a Linux Distro when I do. I am a content creator on YouTube, so need a machine that can do some video editing\\screen recording\\gaming. I also work as a Front End Developer, so need a machine that I can use for Web Dev (and occasional hobby programming).


My budget is about $1,800-$2,000, so the base model of this machine is a possibility for me. Tell me the good, the bad, and the ugly about this machine (and System76 as well). If you think I should get another machine, which one and why? Links to suggested machines appreciated.

Manjaro on Arm

Has anyone tried Manjaro on Arm yet?

I've downloaded some images to mess around with and have been flashing them. I tried it on a RockPro64 and ODroid N2. The RockPro64... meh. It kinda works, it's just what you would expect for an SBC. The EMMC doesn't seem to work for whatever reason and it crashed on me a few times. Also not exactly what anyone would call fast. Like a Raspberry Pi. If you were trapped on a desert island you could probably use it as a computer, maybe, in a pinch.

But the ODroid N2? Ho-le crap it's good. This is easily desktop level good. It's snappy as hell and just feels like a normal desktop. I can't believe how fast this is.

Anyway if you have an ODroid N2 you should really check this out.

I am seeing more and more freezing problems. Is the Linux kernel getting unreliable?

When browsing this subreddit, these days I quite often hear people telling how Linux freezes on their system. I am hearing more and more of these problems. So much that it made me pause and wonder, is the Linux kernel getting unreliable? In the past, Linux used to be the reliable choice, and Windows was the one that constantly crashed. The roles seem to be changing.

It would be more understandable if some hardware device didn't have a driver, but if Linux can just pull the carpet under your feet at any moment, it is worrisome. The answer to the question "does Linux run on this machine" cannot be "let me run it for couple of weeks and see if it freezes".

We all know the Torvalds' (and many other OS makers') rule: "Don't break the userspace." If I was Torvalds I would add a rule: "Don't freeze the computer." Heck, run the machine in 640x480 generic VESA display mode if that's what it takes, but don't freeze it arbitrarily.

Any comments on this? Are you currently experiencing any freezing problems on any of your machines?

Hello all, made a short video on my experiences with the new Radeon 5700XT under Linux Ubuntu 18.04 for anyone that is interested, and also my thoughts on the current state of dual-monitor support in KDE Plasma and Cinnamon DE.

I've yet to give it a heavy-duty test (e.g. serious gaming), but can confirm that is working brilliantly with full hardware acceleration on a dual 4K monitor setup with the current official AMD release-day drivers.
