Tech/Linux Career Advice?

I've been in the restaurant industry for most of my life, and am looking for advice on transitioning into a career involving technology and Linux. What are some first steps I can take, and what are some interesting areas to get into? Also, if there are better threads for career advice, feel free to point me in the right direction. I live in Austin, Texas if that helps. Thanks.

Where to start learning Linux and how to get certified

Hi,

I am looking to learn Linux in depth, although I have 2 years of exposure to it. I am looking to land a career as Linux systems Administrator but I do not know how or where to start. Also I am preparing for AWS SAA certificate as I have already passed AWS Cloud Practitioner. My goal is Linux -> AWS SAA --> AWS SysOps. Any guidance is appreciated.

Thanks

Use ldap authentication in windows machines

Hi. We are having IPA server setup in our infra which we used for file share and as authentication server in our other portals. Now we want to integrate IPA server with windows machine too and want users to login with their ldap credentials in windows too. I heard we can do it with latest samba server. If anyone having idea please guide me or provide some resources to follow to achieve the same.

Linux has a GNU public licence which requires people to publish their code as open source right?

If this is true, why isn't the Kindle, android and Google's internal server open source?

Does anyone know of a piece of software that will plot maps points for all my network connections?

I would like a service that would be able to see the network connections on my computer, figure out their geographical location on earth and plot those on a map. Ya feel me?

Any linux apps that make websites into applications?

Simular to this android app but for Linux?

I would like to have an app that will make a website act as an app. I do not care if it is based on chromium or firefox.

Eight years ago this month, the Nokia N9 went on sale. It was Nokia's first and last MeeGo device. It could have been the first of a modern Linux-based line of devices, but Nokia had already chosen Microsoft as its way forward.

As a Linux platform based on mature technologies, and with the combined backing of Nokia and Intel, [MeeGo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MeeGo) could have become a good competitor to Android, with a touch-centric interaction model very similar to the current mobile OS versions.

We could have had non-Android Linux devices hitting the mainstream market many years ago, running an OS that's more flexible than Android and fully open source. The tight grip that Google holds over OEMs and over more and more basic features of Android, moved to or linked to proprietary services and code, could have been prevented.

[This blog post](https://medium.com/other-oses/https-medium-com-giovanniminelli-what-is-the-nokia-n9-and-why-it-matters-b76ec1a286b1) outlines some of the modern and forward-thinking features of MeeGo and the Nokia N9, while [here is a history](https://muropaketti.com/mobiili/the-story-of-nokia-meego/) of MeeGo's and Nokia's internal development, with the many challenges and hiccups it faced.

Let's remember what an early yet impressive mobile Linux outing MeeGo was eight years ago, and hopefully learn from its history for the future.

Which Distribution for Webserver?

Hey there, I'm about to create my own Webserver and at this point not sure what's best. Ubuntu or Debian? Debian 10 was just released, but most vps provider sell with debian 9... Is there anything negative about 10(Buster)?

Or leave debian and use Ubuntu?

Kind for every help

Graphical Device Manager for Linux (Enable / Disable Devices without Blacklisting)

I recently started working on a graphical device manager for Linux which would allow you to disable and enable devices without blacklisting the kernel module.

It looks a bit like this:

https://i.redd.it/iuycpej8p5l31.png

Would anyone find this useful?

I basically read this: [https://www.thegeekdiary.com/how-to-disable-or-enable-an-hba-without-reboot-under-centos-rhel/](https://www.thegeekdiary.com/how-to-disable-or-enable-an-hba-without-reboot-under-centos-rhel/) (standard Linux as far as I know + tested on Ununtu) and I am turning the whole process into a nice GUI wrapper. It's not yet complete but it's getting close.

I don't know of any GUI tool for Linux that would allow you to disable / enable internal devices in the same or similar way that some other graphical OSes do and the sole reason I started working on this is because I could not find one that does it.

This is my second post and I am trying to start a project that would evoke interest in the community but have no intention of continuing on working on something that the Linux community has no interest about so I don't want to waste my time for something no one likes.

I originally posted this: [https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmasterrace/comments/curhdt./usb\_device\_notifier\_graphical\_notifysend/](https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmasterrace/comments/curhdt/usb_device_notifier_graphical_notifysend/) but did not get any up votes so I cancelled it. This Device Manager is just another project I recently started working on.
