Hosting Suggestions

Hi, everyone!

I've rented a VPS and would like to know what my options are regarding hosting stuff. I've learned how to run an IRC server along with Azuracast and some bots.

I'd like to know what else I can host on my rented machine so that I can learn how work better with Linux and have fun while doing it.

dd and bit rot

I was thinking about dd, bit rot and mechanical HDD's.

If I run from a live environment
# dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sda

Will it rewrite the HDD with exactly the same data?
If so, will it prevent bit rot?
