What does SPEC stand for, in the context of an RPM package?
I understand its purpose and I would assume it meant "specification", however it's commonly written in all capital letters which makes me think it's an acronym.
If it is an acronym, what does it stand for?

The only reason I'm not using Linux on the desktop...style over function
Before I start I wanna say that the fastest way to switch a big number of applications and windows(yeah even compared to mission control/dash/desktop grid etc) is using a mouse.GNOME is too keyboard-centric for it to be manageable(especially with a lot of windows) and I don't really like it, plus the big icons result in more pointer travel time and it takes too much inspiration from macOS which I just consider too flashy to be fast and productive. KDE is pretty good but while customisable it still lacks a few things...like too much headings result in really small icons(I'm a fan of the Windows 7 taskbar style, it's way faster than macOS or GNOME) on absolutely every theme for some reason except maybe Sweet, Icon only task manager has bad window previews too(which in my tests is the fastest to change a large number of applications with a large number of windows and still be organised.) Desktop Grid is also a bit too big which increases cursor travel time. The problem is that they both take some tiny bits of inspiration(more for GNOME though) from macOS which is by design style over function(can you count the numbers of pixel spaces wasted, it's quite a nice puzzle, the bigger the screen the bigger it gets). When instead at least KDE should take more inspiration from Windows. Just take a look at it, the cursor travel time is at an all time low, the time it takes to switch multiple windows using window preview from the taskbar is amazing. There's also no pixel wasted either! Even Task View is much better in my opinion because the windows themselves are small which means more can fit AND it doesn't take as much time to switch between them.

TL;DR both KDE and GNOME are sometimes much in favour of style opposed to function. I've really tried customising both but some things just can't be changed. Even in the case of KDE the functionality of icon only task manager is barely changeable and the themes all suffer from too much style over function. I'd totally use Linux and support open source software even more on my PC if I'll ever find a good DE. I don't consider Xfce to be a good alternative because since it switched to GTK3, it basically depends on GNOME and their design. And a lot of advanced stuff is missing from Xfce(like a simple Windows 7 style taskbar) or functionality like Mission Control.

PS: I know there's Cinnamon(the fact that Linux Mint packages are very old doesn't help either) but it just feels laggy and old and extremely stiff(Windows with its very fast animations doesn't) compared to the two big ones: GNOME and KDE.

Command line audio player that allows me to easily start from same starting point after pausing
I want to emulate the transcribe software I use to slow down and learn songs but in the linux command line. I can use many programs to slow the song down. What I need now is a way to simply start from a set starting point each time I "unpause."
This way, I can listen to the section I'm learning.... pause it... work it out on guitar... replay from the same starting point again... pause it... work it out... rinse and repeat.
I'd be really great if I could mark this starting point on the fly instead of having to remember starting times and type a complex command every time to start from that point.

Anyone Want A Zenbook With Linux On It?
Would anyone be interested in buying an ultra-book with something like PopOS, Ubuntu or Elementary or even ChromeOS installed on it?
**It's the Asus Zenbook UX305CA with the "Quad-HD" screen.**
* **Core M3-6y30 fan-less**
* **8gb's of RAM**
* **256 GB m.2 SSD (new drive, actually)**
* **3200 x 1800 resolution (But performs better at 1920 x 1080 when watching lots of YouTube)**
* **13.3 inch size and very light weight.**
* **Great keyboard imo.**
* **Touchscreen works better in Linux than Windows LOL**
It runs the fastest with CloudReady/ChromeOS. But they have no Android app support and the track-pad is a little weird on that OS. I'd call it, temperamental. It's a Zenbook so it's incredibly light. The outside has some scratches, and dents but the inside is in great shape. NO scratches or problems in terms of functionality. Anyway, just curious if anybody would be interested.
**Here's the listing on Facebook, locally using their marketplace. Asking $400- $500** [**https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/201461901167414/**](https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/201461901167414/)

Copying files to system directories as root extremely slow
So yesterday I installed an icon pack to my gnome Manjaro 19.0 system, and it's required to copy the extracted .tar files into the icon folder in usr/share/.icons
But the speeds of the transfer was extremely slow, I'm talking everything from 10-50 kB/s which took perhaps 10 minutes. (Icon folder was around 12 MB large)
Is this normal? Or have I missed something

Docking Station - DisplayLink/EVDI
I'm looking for a new USB C docking station for my laptop and specifically I'm looking for one that works out of the box on linux and does the display stuff in hardware in the docking station instead of requiring drivers (EVDI) on the laptop. I currently have a setup that works, but it requires me to reinstall EVDI every time the kernel changes and while I very much appreciate the FOSS folks that make that an option for me, I would rather not have to do that and I would rather not have the system resource drain on my laptop that requires (DisplayLink is often the top CPU user on my system).
My goal is really to be able to just plug in the single USB C/Thunderbolt plug on the laptop that provides the system with power and then everything is connected to the docking station - monitor, wired network, external DVD writer, etc. I have all of this right now with a Media Gear docking station with the exception of that required DisplayLink/EVDI software.
So - I think I know what I want, but how can I know if a given docking station will require display link or if it will just work? Is what I'm asking for even possible? Do you have any suggestions of places to start or brands that are better than others?

The First Linux Distro Released
I've been searching for the first Linux distro to ever be released but I can't find it anywhere. I'm confident it exists. What would have been the git of the 90s? Some home server with a hilarious pure html page?
It would be interesting to see how far we've come. I'm sure some of it could be funny but also could be humbling and encouraging to see how ridiculous even the best ideas can seem to be in their early versions. Is anyone else curious?

Sudo for sbin folders?
So I was testing different desktop environments on (kali) Linux, and I noticed, besides how it looks, it also changes when to use sudo before commands.
With a clean install on both machines with everything default:
XFCE -> have to use sudo for ifconfig
GNOME -> dont need sudo for ifconfig

After more research I found that its the complete sbin folder..:
XFCE -> have to use sudo for sbin folder
GNOME -> dont need sudo for sbin folder

Both machines have indentical sudoers file.

First of all why dont I need to use sudo on GNOME for sbin programs? Bc sbin need sudo right?
And secondly I noticed a lot of people online just use the command 'ifconfig' without sudo. So they propably dont need to use sudo for sbin programs. Isnt this weird? Reference to first questions.
