Anyone Want A Zenbook With Linux On It?

Would anyone be interested in buying an ultra-book with something like PopOS, Ubuntu or Elementary or even ChromeOS installed on it?

**It's the Asus Zenbook UX305CA with the "Quad-HD" screen.**

* **Core M3-6y30 fan-less**
* **8gb's of RAM**
* **256 GB m.2 SSD (new drive, actually)**
* **3200 x 1800 resolution (But performs better at 1920 x 1080 when watching lots of YouTube)**
* **13.3 inch size and very light weight.**
* **Great keyboard imo.**
* **Touchscreen works better in Linux than Windows LOL**

It runs the fastest with CloudReady/ChromeOS. But they have no Android app support and the track-pad is a little weird on that OS. I'd call it, temperamental. It's a Zenbook so it's incredibly light. The outside has some scratches, and dents but the inside is in great shape. NO scratches or problems in terms of functionality. Anyway, just curious if anybody would be interested.

**Here's the listing on Facebook, locally using their marketplace. Asking $400- $500** [**https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/201461901167414/**](https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/201461901167414/)

**Craigslist:** [**https://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/sys/d/oklahoma-city-asus-zenbook-win-10-8gb/7080058569.html**](https://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/sys/d/oklahoma-city-asus-zenbook-win-10-8gb/7080058569.html)

Copying files to system directories as root extremely slow

So yesterday I installed an icon pack to my gnome Manjaro 19.0 system, and it's required to copy the extracted .tar files into the icon folder in usr/share/.icons

But the speeds of the transfer was extremely slow, I'm talking everything from 10-50 kB/s which took perhaps 10 minutes. (Icon folder was around 12 MB large)

Is this normal? Or have I missed something

Docking Station - DisplayLink/EVDI

I'm looking for a new USB C docking station for my laptop and specifically I'm looking for one that works out of the box on linux and does the display stuff in hardware in the docking station instead of requiring drivers (EVDI) on the laptop. I currently have a setup that works, but it requires me to reinstall EVDI every time the kernel changes and while I very much appreciate the FOSS folks that make that an option for me, I would rather not have to do that and I would rather not have the system resource drain on my laptop that requires (DisplayLink is often the top CPU user on my system).

My goal is really to be able to just plug in the single USB C/Thunderbolt plug on the laptop that provides the system with power and then everything is connected to the docking station - monitor, wired network, external DVD writer, etc. I have all of this right now with a Media Gear docking station with the exception of that required DisplayLink/EVDI software.

So - I think I know what I want, but how can I know if a given docking station will require display link or if it will just work? Is what I'm asking for even possible? Do you have any suggestions of places to start or brands that are better than others?

The First Linux Distro Released

I've been searching for the first Linux distro to ever be released but I can't find it anywhere. I'm confident it exists. What would have been the git of the 90s? Some home server with a hilarious pure html page?

It would be interesting to see how far we've come. I'm sure some of it could be funny but also could be humbling and encouraging to see how ridiculous even the best ideas can seem to be in their early versions. Is anyone else curious?

Sudo for sbin folders?

So I was testing different desktop environments on (kali) Linux, and I noticed, besides how it looks, it also changes when to use sudo before commands.

With a clean install on both machines with everything default:

XFCE -> have to use sudo for ifconfig

GNOME -> dont need sudo for ifconfig

After more research I found that its the complete sbin folder..:

XFCE -> have to use sudo for sbin folder

GNOME -> dont need sudo for sbin folder

Both machines have indentical sudoers file.

First of all why dont I need to use sudo on GNOME for sbin programs? Bc sbin need sudo right?

And secondly I noticed a lot of people online just use the command 'ifconfig' without sudo. So they propably dont need to use sudo for sbin programs. Isnt this weird? Reference to first questions.

a demo to Pop!_OS Shell; an extension that adds tiling features in GNOME!!

Pop!\_OS 20.04 will come with a pre-installed extension (obviously disabled by default) that can turn GNOME 3.36 into a regular tiling manager, plus we get the rest full desktop!!

on Github: [https://github.com/pop-os/shell](https://github.com/pop-os/shell)

that's a demo ( [https://youtu.be/Wr2hLO16hMk](https://youtu.be/Wr2hLO16hMk) ) on a pre-release (Git today) with some of the features, running on Fedora Rawhide (aka Fedora 32/33)

Best PCI Express or USB 1200Mbps 802.11AC WiFi Adapter for Linux

hi, I have several older laptops that have built in 'N' type PCI Express Half Mini Adapters and I would like to replace with the newer 'AC' type.

Can someone advise which one is best for Linux without need to install drivers/chipset manually. I would prefer one that already has support in the Linux kernel if possible. So it's good to go after replacing the older adapter.

...or would it be easier to go for a USB 1200Mbps 802.11AC WiFi Adapter?

I understand there are several chipsets ... Ralink 3070, Atheros AR9271, and Realtek 8187, not sure which one are most suited to Linux?

any advice for a newbie would be appreciated.

HP AMD Chromebook for running Linux

Hi Everyone, I’m new to the forum and to Linux. I just got an HP AMD chromebook and am keen to install Linux on it. Preferably Fedora but I’m open to others like Gallium as well. Has anyone done this successfully? Feel free to comment.
