On why linux is not to dominate the home computer space (and why this is maybe fine)
Before the storm in the cup begins i would like to describe my position. In relation to most people i am quite tech savvy user. Not quite on compile and modify kernel level, but i am fluent in several programming languages and have at least a basic understanding of computer from ground level (we are talking bit adders and logic of ram) to high levels like networking.
I do currently write this post on a windows computer, however I think positively of linux and admire all the work that went into it. I am running it on my ~~old laptop motherboard in even older computer case~~ headless server (it would be crazy to use anything else - windows server, are you serious?) and have tried it several times on my own computer.
My computer is a laptop with Intel i7 (8th gene) processor and 1060 with max-q design. I run it connected to a 4k monitor. Laptops almost always use so called hybrid approach to deal with graphics. In my last try I used Pop_os! -> I know debian shell commands like apt and didn't really feel like learning arch style one and drivers for my laptop components were only available on debian type oses.
Installation was smooth and fast - though the installer crashed once, but this was not really a big problem especially in comparison with windows mbr problems i had in the past and once the os bootet i started to install the most important programs.
And then the problems started. The second monitor would and would not display - i deduced the problem were NVIDIA drivers - not the fault of the os and the problem is still being fixed as we speak. However, even when the monitor worked the firefox was quite slow in comparison with windows version - this was due to disabled hardware acceleration which was, if I understand correctly, decision made because of NVIDIA driver mess.
And now let's talk about the programs. If small github project have much higher probability of working on linux than on windows because some python libs not being available on windows, project of bigger companies are usually not available on linux. For high demand tools open source alternatives are available - but does range in quality from Blender to OpenSCAD. It should also be said here that to most users, even if it is simpler than clicking, shell is a place of horror and would like to not touch it ever - so called app stores have mitigated that issue mildly, they work until the moment user uses some software that included - then they have the honour to look at horror that is most open source documentation and if they have to compile it themselves it's a lost cause.

AND after all that debugging and problem-solving you go back to windows and you look at your WSL and you say "IT'S fine." and you forget that you ever went down that rout.
And where does this leave me? It leaves me puzzled. As server os it is superior. For programming shell is better than cmd, but WSL can solve that. And Android phones, though running linux, are in my opinion very not linux-y. It's a closed system collecting user data - the last thing that linux is about.
Maybe I am wrong. But as a general opinion linux will never really compete with windows and mac-os, because it's targeting different people. Big organizations like governments to this date have not had much luck with the transition (one notable example is Munich - the jury why this has not succeed is still out - here are 2 view point https://itsfoss.com/munich-linux-failure/, https://www.windowscentral.com/munich-germanys-government-using-windows-again-after-failure-linux ) For big corporations the transition much more expensive because of quite high labor cost and the time lost and so not may have made the switch.

New Linux User Debian vs Arch
Hi guys.
As the noscript says, i’m here to ask the most common question, Debian or Arch?
Before answering tho, I would like to say few more things.
I am a new Linux user, using it for a week, but i’ve read a lot for about 1 month, so yeah, i see everywhere people saying “if you are new to Linux, go for Debian based distros, maybe Ubuntu, it’s easier”... but why it’s easier?
I know that the main difference is that Debian has 3 branches and what ppl suggest is the stable branch, due to “the user will less likely fk up everything”, instead of Arch being a rolling release, but is this the only difference between Arch and Debian?
What in terms of security, is one better than another?
Atm i am using Manjaro to test stuffs up, but i’m still in the process of deciding where to really land for the next months to really learn Linux, so I would like a more “in depth” analysis of these 2 distros.
My setup at this current state is Manjaro i3wm edition (i dont want to use a DE anymore), so that would be my choice as well under Debian or Arch.

Ubuntu Desktop - Am I the problem?
I've tried using Ubuntu Desktop for many many years and have always had issues that push me to other distributions. This time around it was that my "Software Center" wouldn't work. I had to install gnome-software, update the regular software center from there, and then I was able to open it. Wtf?
I had an Arch installation that was the best, most error-free experience I've had. I stopped using it because I wanted to use a more "corporate" distro and felt like I may have been unknowingly making myself less secure. Finally, I've found myself on Fedora and have been having a world-class experience so far - but the mystery of Ubuntu always being a buggy mess for me still bothers me.
Does everyone else have issues with Ubuntu desktop? Is it just me, and all the various hardware I've had over the years? It's also not just Gnome that does it to me - it's any flavor of Ubuntu I try.

Learning scheduled task using bash noscript
I recently buy a raspberry pi, so i thought i want make it my own local server and my playground to learn more about bash and it's command... Previously i use ubuntu for development and studying (fyi: i'm an informatics student) i already read some instruction for cron jobs but i still confuse... Advice are really appreciated :)

Could Google's Fuchsia operating system eventually pose a threat to Linux?
Google seems to be putting a lot of resources into their new Fuchsia OS, which though open source, is still completely managed by Google. It also has the drawback of not being under copyleft licenses like GPL, which means other companies can just take it and make proprietary forks.
People who have followed the Fuchsia project, do you see it eventually becoming a significant enough competitor to Linux to be a threat to it, and therefore giving Google even more control of the software world?

htop (a common improvement on top) lists several columns for each process; how does one hide a given process (eg PRI instead of PRI)? I understand each measure of used memory and/or processor usage is controversial, but certainly not every typical usage requires that determination? What should one be aware of to configure top/htop/similar to serve this purpose better?

If ubuntu is a distro, gnome/kde is a DE then what is lxqt? Loving the new kde plasma. Does this use lxqt? Installing lubuntu rn cause I have the ISO and download is taking forever. If I install the kde environment will I still be left with anything I should remove from the lubuntu install?

Updating lubuntu after a long period of inactivity
I haven’t touched my emachines w3507 in quite a while, so i want to upgrade to the next release.
Thing is, apt update and upgrade dont work because the sources for this release are eol.
do-release-upgrade is being a massive brat being like “pLeAsE iNsTaLl AlL aVaIlAbLe UpDaTeS blah blah blah” like, bitch, I fucking cant because i need to update to the next release.
Any help?

Beginner here, any good apps/extensions/tips?
Hello everyone. I'm a new Linux user, and I have some questions for this big community. First of all, after reading about distributions, and of course testing it, I choose Pop!_OS.
Before Linux, I used Windows, especially Windows 10, but I really hate it. No customization, a lot of ads, stupid solutions, and other stupid things. Change the operating system for me was very easy, because I not playing any games on the PC, and I want to work in IT, in the future. I really big fan of customization, full control of the system, a lot of open source apps, and Linux does allow it.
I do this topic because I want to find some good apps, extensions, and other productivity tools. I want to find something else that is available in Pop!_Shop. An example is uLauncher. Very good, useful tools with tons of extensions. This is really helpful. Another good tool, especially its GNOME extensions are DDTX, Clipboard Indicator, and a few others for work or customization. I really want to find something else, which is not very popular, because when I ask Google "Top gnome extensions" or "Top Linux apps" I always find the same apps, which are the most popular, and it pulls for years.
Except for apps/tools, some tips are welcome! Tips like aliases, some cool visual effects like cmatrix, etc.
