New Linux User Debian vs Arch

Hi guys.

As the noscript says, i’m here to ask the most common question, Debian or Arch?

Before answering tho, I would like to say few more things.
I am a new Linux user, using it for a week, but i’ve read a lot for about 1 month, so yeah, i see everywhere people saying “if you are new to Linux, go for Debian based distros, maybe Ubuntu, it’s easier”... but why it’s easier?

I know that the main difference is that Debian has 3 branches and what ppl suggest is the stable branch, due to “the user will less likely fk up everything”, instead of Arch being a rolling release, but is this the only difference between Arch and Debian?

What in terms of security, is one better than another?

Atm i am using Manjaro to test stuffs up, but i’m still in the process of deciding where to really land for the next months to really learn Linux, so I would like a more “in depth” analysis of these 2 distros.

My setup at this current state is Manjaro i3wm edition (i dont want to use a DE anymore), so that would be my choice as well under Debian or Arch.

Thanks for your time.

Why do you hate windows?

I am just wondering about your bad experiences with windows/windows10. Although I have a lot of problems with it despite my "patience" and love for it's functions and what it can do (also nice aesthetics and other things that don't have problems) I still want to give it a chance.

Ubuntu Desktop - Am I the problem?

I've tried using Ubuntu Desktop for many many years and have always had issues that push me to other distributions. This time around it was that my "Software Center" wouldn't work. I had to install gnome-software, update the regular software center from there, and then I was able to open it. Wtf?

I had an Arch installation that was the best, most error-free experience I've had. I stopped using it because I wanted to use a more "corporate" distro and felt like I may have been unknowingly making myself less secure. Finally, I've found myself on Fedora and have been having a world-class experience so far - but the mystery of Ubuntu always being a buggy mess for me still bothers me.

Does everyone else have issues with Ubuntu desktop? Is it just me, and all the various hardware I've had over the years? It's also not just Gnome that does it to me - it's any flavor of Ubuntu I try.

Could Google's Fuchsia operating system eventually pose a threat to Linux?

Google seems to be putting a lot of resources into their new Fuchsia OS, which though open source, is still completely managed by Google. It also has the drawback of not being under copyleft licenses like GPL, which means other companies can just take it and make proprietary forks.

People who have followed the Fuchsia project, do you see it eventually becoming a significant enough competitor to Linux to be a threat to it, and therefore giving Google even more control of the software world?

htop listings

htop (a common improvement on top) lists several columns for each process; how does one hide a given process (eg PRI instead of PRI)? I understand each measure of used memory and/or processor usage is controversial, but certainly not every typical usage requires that determination? What should one be aware of to configure top/htop/similar to serve this purpose better?

Which drive to save my files in?

I want to format my 32-bit Windows 7 computer to LXLE but I have some files that I want to save. In which drive should I save the file in (eg. D Drive, E Drive, etc.?) so that those files are not deleted when formatting from Windows to LXLE?

Cloud back-up

I’m somewhat new to Linux, what does everyone use for cloud back-up? I’ve converted an old MacBook pro to Ubuntu. I’m used to apple’s time machine and iCloud. Is there something similar used seamlessly with Linux where it’s automatically done?

Hello guys,is it true that Lenovo and Dell make notebooks more linux friendly? And if it is so,why? What are the differences between a Lenovo notebook and a notebook from another manufacturer that make the first more linux friendly?

Beginner here, any good apps/extensions/tips?

Hello everyone. I'm a new Linux user, and I have some questions for this big community. First of all, after reading about distributions, and of course testing it, I choose Pop!_OS.

Before Linux, I used Windows, especially Windows 10, but I really hate it. No customization, a lot of ads, stupid solutions, and other stupid things. Change the operating system for me was very easy, because I not playing any games on the PC, and I want to work in IT, in the future. I really big fan of customization, full control of the system, a lot of open source apps, and Linux does allow it.

I do this topic because I want to find some good apps, extensions, and other productivity tools. I want to find something else that is available in Pop!_Shop. An example is uLauncher. Very good, useful tools with tons of extensions. This is really helpful. Another good tool, especially its GNOME extensions are DDTX, Clipboard Indicator, and a few others for work or customization. I really want to find something else, which is not very popular, because when I ask Google "Top gnome extensions" or "Top Linux apps" I always find the same apps, which are the most popular, and it pulls for years.

Except for apps/tools, some tips are welcome! Tips like aliases, some cool visual effects like cmatrix, etc.

Sorry for any mistakes, English is not my main language, but I work on it. Thanks, and stay safe.

How to backup?

Hi,

i use Manjaro with gnome. As we all know backup is one of the most important things so, do You know some good backup software? It should support network share as backup location and local USB disk. I used to use veeam, but it lags my computer too much.
It can be CLI only. What do you use/know that is good, what is the most popular?

My journey over the past few years in deciding the best linux distro for my Desktop

I originally made this as a youtube comment regarding how I selected a linux distro, and am re-posting it here because I didn't want it to get lost in the void of youtube comments section. Basically I just switched my main desktop's distro up once or twice every year, until I landed on what I think is the best option for myself

1. Ubuntu with Gnome was my first experience using linux, when I really didn't know what I was doing. It worked well for a while, but then I eventually became frustrated over the lack of customization options in Gnome (Seriously not being able to have different wallpapers per monitor by default is a giant missing feature)
2. I then went back to Windows as my Desktop OS for a time (RIP), and started using Raspbian with my Raspberry Pis. The desktop environment is okay, but it really isn't necessary for most applications I use the PI for. Running the server version with no desktop environment at all is very nice though, and I still use it to this day
3. Then I tried out xubuntu after coming to the realization that different desktop environments exist; opting to start fresh with xubuntu where the Gnome I wouldn't be using isn't installed. I really love the features of XFCE like workspace switching with the mouse wheel and total control of the desktop's panels; all running on very little resources. This didn't last too long though, because it was at this point I heard the controversy of Snap packages, and heard about some of the questionable stuff Canonical has tried to pull with Ubuntu
4. After that, I switched to Mint, which has the best of both worlds as far as packages and software goes. You have access to the Ubuntu repos (no Snaps included), and have a beautiful desktop environment with Cinnamon. For the average desktop consumer, this is definitely the best choice imo. But then after a while, I saw an outline of the giant tree of linux distros, and realized that along with Ubuntu, it's a few iterations down from Debian, which is one of the big core linux distributions.
5. And then I switched to Debian with XFCE desktop environment, which is where I am today. In my experience this is definitely the most stable distribution. Between point releases, updates are very light and only include necessary security patches. It's a little more work to set up as a desktop environment, because you have to manually install non-free driver packages yourself among other things. But once you get it going it's incredibly stable, with the OS + Desktop Environment only taking up ~500MB of RAM. And it's some nice peace of mind knowing that the OS is one of the core linux distros that's least likely to have anything malicious wedged into it. If you're wanting to run a Linux machine as a server, or are willing to do the initial configurations to use it as an everyday desktop computer, I'd recommend this 100%

My boyfriend is very into Linux. I know nothing about computers. I want to understand.

I know nothing. If I can use a computer or phone and it does basic tasks for me I’m all good. I currently use an iPhone and a MacBook.

My boyfriend is much more into programming. Recently he got an expensive Lenovo and has dove headfirst into this Linux stuff.

He tries to explain it to me. I don’t know what he’s saying! “Ubuntu,” “Free and Open,” “terminal.” He’s got this new software that’s not google called “Brave.” He got a Raspeberry Pie thing for Christmas. He’s so enamored with it, and wants to share it with me and make me use it, but he can’t explain it to me well enough for me to understand and when looking it up myself I can’t find many basic user friendly explanations either. Frankly, I’m a little scared of computers. Terrified of getting hacked. Anything wonky looking on my computer scares me and sometimes Linux looks, well, creepy to me. It’s definitely my lack of knowledge. I am a complete noob.

If you guys had a friend, or gf, who knew nothing about Linux or ANYTHING, how would you even begin to explain it? I want to understand the slightest bit so I don’t crush his excitement with my lack of enthusiasm.

Tree command

Hey Guys, Hope you are having a good time.

One day, I am in a ssh session. I am not a root user, which implies I cannot install apt packages on that. But I wanted to see one directory structure, with tree command.

Okay, There are some noscripts online to print tree structure. But, They didn't have other functionalities like excluding directories with regex, following symbolic links etc...

So, I am making one python package which exactly mimics Unix tree command.

And the additional advantage is Windows users can also benefit from this package.

It works as a command line utility.

Take a look at this and Contribute if possible.

Thanks a lot.
