Hey about linux Dedicated Environments

i use WM and debian 64bit, i change everything like i saw in the internet , but its not look like "GNOME" Dedicated Environments Ubuntu , or i cant change it like Ubuntu ? ty for answers :)

Why do people want to make Linux popular?

I built my first Linux PC about a year ago. So far setting it up to work optimally with my hardware has been the most painful experience because all the software repositories that are in guides to use change locations. IDK Linux I wanted to learn but I don't want to have to scour the internet for information just to make my programs work and for the desktop to remain stable. All my hardware seems to be buggy with Linux half my games have to be played through lutris or proton. I actually can't stand this it's like vista all over again why would anyone recommend this to someone like they did to me. You have to be able to use terminal nearly every applet breaks over time and u either have to update your dependencies or install a new edition of the OS.

Only thing that really bugs me about Linux is u can try to force something and some other setting overrides it. Out of the box 19.2 cinnamon was buggy and I actually had to mess with terminal to even make the splash screen work.

CLI browser with built in ASCII image display

Hi, I posting here because of the community size.
I know W3M able to display images on X11, and I know Browsh able to display everything in ascii.
But I still love links and all fork and I don't mind to not download automatically the pictures. So please share if you know any links fork that support a built in ASCII image display support. I thinking about something like links, but you could (by a short-key) open the images via chafa (or some similar) without storing on disk. I know it is a special need, but I wish to not make another unnecessary "WHEEL" if it's already developed.

How to RAID 0 install Ubuntu 20.04 on 2 M.2 drives

I'm brand new to Linux, and I've barely come across any resources explaining RAID 0 setup on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. This is what I'm seeing. I don't know how to get it to install over both M.2 drives. Please help.

Installing Jack Audio On Chromebook / Linux

I'm dumb, and I don't know how to install anything on linux. Can someone help me with installing Jackaudio, I got the tar.gz to a folder and idk what to do now. I've attempted to understand the readme files and what not, but my brain can't comprehend the stuff that it's saying.

Or if this isn't possible on the Chromebook Linux thingy for some reason, just say.

What exactly is expected of a package maintainer?

I assume if it would just be "build a package and add it to the repo", and additional updating, more people would do it. Does maintainership require technical knowledge, like the ability to audit the code? Do distros require you to register somewhere officially or something? I'd like to hear your experiences with various projects.

Stripe Size and Speed of XFS on HW RAID10

I am running HW RAID using an Areca 1216-4i controller with 4 x 16 TB hard drives in RAID10 to give about 32 TB of storage.

System will be used by 3 users for CAD design of integrated circuits.

Most of the files will be cad tools and libraries but they are running simulations and drawing integrated circuits which will generate many files

The Areca gui reports stripe size: 128 kB and block size 512 B.

I already set up an XFS partition using default parameters. fdisk-l just shows sector size and i/o size 512 b.

Questions:

Does the 1216 controller export stripe info so that mkfs.xfs picked it up during file system creation?

How can I tell what su and sw values were used if any in the creation of the xfs file system?

If values in file system I created were wrong then how much will this impact performance?

If I remake the fs then what do I specify for su and sw?

From Redhat docs I think

su=128k. (From raid controller stripe value)
sw=2 (4 disks in raid 10 so 2 data disks)

Is there a better stripe value to use for the raid controller?

I'm on the fence again of going back to W10 full time - and feeling tired

I'm a pro photographer and love Linux, love open source world, community, everything. I love using my KDE, love doing stuff there, tweaking things, reaching out. Love the apps, love knowing that my system is working for me and not for some nasty corp. out there. Love to help wherever I can or file a suggestion or bug report.

BUT - I miss my work tools. And my work tools are Photoshop and Lightroom. Mostly a PS.

I have tried. Really, really tried to find a substitute. I made GIMP to look and feel like my PS used to - all shortcuts, menu positions, windows. Except Actions, whatever GIMP offered, I used. But no matter what, its clunky interface and slowness (compared to what I've used to) made editing images a tiring experience. I have to edit a lot of images and all are super big ones (30mpx) 16 bit files.

Then I tried Krita. Super fast moving, super PS-like interface and shortcuts, many many pro tools for raster images. Big kudos to Krita and its team - you guys rock! But actually changing something within a 30mpix image is slow. Firing up Curves takes a few seconds, changing Curves takes another. I started longing for speed - again!

Then I installed PS under Virtualbox - no 3D, very limited amount of VRAM (256mb out of 8gb!), limited memory and cpu usage. And you know what? It eats both Krita and GIMP combined as far as the speed goes! :( Like there's no comparison - not only I have my Actions, but doing stuff there is an instant. All that in a virtual environment with at least 60% less hardware and no GPU acceleration!

So I reached the point - again - should I stay or should I go? This is my job. I can hate Adobe or Microsoft as much as I can but I am forced to work there as there is NO good enough substitute for my needs in FOSS.

I could keep working in virtualbox, under virtual environment. But why waste my super-current hardware? Why using like 40% of it? PS is fast and all, but could be way faster, as it is not using any of my GPU. 3D is not working nicely under virtualbox so I have to keep that disabled too.

I'm very sad about it and frankly, tired of all those transitions I did over 2 decades... I finally thought I found it, this is it. I deleted all win partitions, I made only ext3 file systems... but maybe it's time again to go back until this lousy company starts making PS&LR linux ports.

Ubuntu not upgrading 18.04 to 20.04

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This was likely caused by: * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu Please use the tool 'ppa-purge' from the ppa-purge package to remove software from a Launchpad PPA and try the upgrade again.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If you want to investigate this yourself the log files in '/var/log/dist-upgrade' will contain details about the upgrade. Specifically, look at 'main.log' and 'apt.log'

Pure Minecraft distro

So this sounds weird buut, I have a plan to make a distro with the sole purpose of just playing Minecraft, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what the minimum resources the computer would need to just run Minecraft. I know you need like java and a desktop environment, but I want to cut all the fluff. I was also wondering how I might customize a distro like Debian to have my requirements, and possibly distribute this Distro. Any help would be appreciated!!

Is there any good Conway's Life for xscreensaver?

cloudlife does not allow you to run a normal game of Life.

Googling found this and this which both have weird bugs and limits. For LifeSaver, the scale option seems to draw 1/N as many pixels, as if it was going to scale, but it won't actually scale for me.

Interesting find

Hey everyone! I just started learning linux and how the operating system works (for reference, I started learning a few days ago).

I'm currently working with a program that was recommended to me by a friend who has known about linux for some time. The program is called overthewire.org, and it's less of a program and more of a terminal based learning game (check it out).

I started experimenting with the windows cmd prompt, which is basically a primitive version of the linux terminal. Using some of my knowledge from the terminal coding game, I tried to get the program running on cmd.

Surprisingly enough, the program ran pretty well up until I had to switch levels, I made sure I had the proper code to advance to the next level, but even after some testing, and revision, cmd still denied access to the next level in the program! I obviously know that the linux terminal works differently than windows cmd prompt, but I still imagined that the program would fail at much farther ahead.

I figure windows puts a lock on the cmd prompt so you can't do too much with it. Unlike linux, windows just has the cmd prompt as a feature, just to say it's there, but linux pretty much runs on the terminal.

Just an interesting find, I thought I should share it!

ps: I use the latest version of ubuntu for linux, and I prefer linux mint, but I'm open to trying the other versions.
