I'm on the fence again of going back to W10 full time - and feeling tired
I'm a pro photographer and love Linux, love open source world, community, everything. I love using my KDE, love doing stuff there, tweaking things, reaching out. Love the apps, love knowing that my system is working for me and not for some nasty corp. out there. Love to help wherever I can or file a suggestion or bug report.
BUT - I miss my work tools. And my work tools are Photoshop and Lightroom. Mostly a PS.
I have tried. Really, really tried to find a substitute. I made GIMP to look and feel like my PS used to - all shortcuts, menu positions, windows. Except Actions, whatever GIMP offered, I used. But no matter what, its clunky interface and slowness (compared to what I've used to) made editing images a tiring experience. I have to edit a lot of images and all are super big ones (30mpx) 16 bit files.
Then I tried Krita. Super fast moving, super PS-like interface and shortcuts, many many pro tools for raster images. Big kudos to Krita and its team - you guys rock! But actually changing something within a 30mpix image is slow. Firing up Curves takes a few seconds, changing Curves takes another. I started longing for speed - again!
Then I installed PS under Virtualbox - no 3D, very limited amount of VRAM (256mb out of 8gb!), limited memory and cpu usage. And you know what? It eats both Krita and GIMP combined as far as the speed goes! :( Like there's no comparison - not only I have my Actions, but doing stuff there is an instant. All that in a virtual environment with at least 60% less hardware and no GPU acceleration!
So I reached the point - again - should I stay or should I go? This is my job. I can hate Adobe or Microsoft as much as I can but I am forced to work there as there is NO good enough substitute for my needs in FOSS.
I could keep working in virtualbox, under virtual environment. But why waste my super-current hardware? Why using like 40% of it? PS is fast and all, but could be way faster, as it is not using any of my GPU. 3D is not working nicely under virtualbox so I have to keep that disabled too.
I'm very sad about it and frankly, tired of all those transitions I did over 2 decades... I finally thought I found it, this is it. I deleted all win partitions, I made only ext3 file systems... but maybe it's time again to go back until this lousy company starts making PS&LR linux ports.

Any resources for building an OS from the linux kernel up?
Hi I was wondering if there is any guides/resources on how to make an operating system on top of the kernel and also how the Kernel works, I have a lot of time on my hands and I thought it would try to learn something new! Any help would be very appreciated.

Pure Minecraft distro
So this sounds weird buut, I have a plan to make a distro with the sole purpose of just playing Minecraft, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what the minimum resources the computer would need to just run Minecraft. I know you need like java and a desktop environment, but I want to cut all the fluff. I was also wondering how I might customize a distro like Debian to have my requirements, and possibly distribute this Distro. Any help would be appreciated!!

Is there any good Conway's Life for xscreensaver?
cloudlife does not allow you to run a normal game of Life.
Googling found this and this which both have weird bugs and limits. For LifeSaver, the scale option seems to draw 1/N as many pixels, as if it was going to scale, but it won't actually scale for me.

Interesting find
Hey everyone! I just started learning linux and how the operating system works (for reference, I started learning a few days ago).
I'm currently working with a program that was recommended to me by a friend who has known about linux for some time. The program is called overthewire.org, and it's less of a program and more of a terminal based learning game (check it out).
I started experimenting with the windows cmd prompt, which is basically a primitive version of the linux terminal. Using some of my knowledge from the terminal coding game, I tried to get the program running on cmd.
Surprisingly enough, the program ran pretty well up until I had to switch levels, I made sure I had the proper code to advance to the next level, but even after some testing, and revision, cmd still denied access to the next level in the program! I obviously know that the linux terminal works differently than windows cmd prompt, but I still imagined that the program would fail at much farther ahead.
I figure windows puts a lock on the cmd prompt so you can't do too much with it. Unlike linux, windows just has the cmd prompt as a feature, just to say it's there, but linux pretty much runs on the terminal.
Just an interesting find, I thought I should share it!
ps: I use the latest version of ubuntu for linux, and I prefer linux mint, but I'm open to trying the other versions.

Hey guys, I've recently decided to drop W (IT Tech and GNU/Linux nerd for at least 5-6 years)but this means I need a cad software. I've used fusion 360 since I only need it for 3D printing.
I thought about blender at first but quickly realised that for functional parts it's not the best. Also gave a try at freecad but doesn't fit me.

Any sync'ed monitor backlight out there working also on linux (ubuntu)?
As noscriptd, since I started working from home recently, I'd like to improve my working spot by adding some monitor backlight
I read somewhere that it helps against the eye strain and since I work also at very late hours (especially when the kids are in bed) I'd like to preserve my eyes as much as possible.
However, given I spend half of my time on Ubuntu, I'm looking for something compatible also for Linux and I'd like to have it in sync with the current image visible on monitor (there are static simple backlights as well)
Any tips, guys?

ZombieTrackerGPS 1.05
Version 1.05 of ZombieTrackerGPS (Winterbike Edition) has been released, with several new features based on user requests and feedback.
ZTGPS is a Linux+KDE native PIM application satisfying the same purpose as Garmin's "BaseCamp" software, which does not run on Linux. ZTGPS provides sophisticated query and sorting capabilities for GPS tracks. It is targeted at cyclists, runners, hikers, light vehicle use, and anyone collecting GPS tracks from handheld units, particularly if you prefer data storage on your own computer to cloud based storage. A feature denoscription and FAQ is available on the web site below. Binary packages for several popular distros are available under the Downloads tab.
Recent additions include live capture from the Linux GPS daemon, support for GPX waypoint import, export, and management with auto-symbol selection from the US National Park Service map symbol set, localization support, and a more efficient internal point storage for 35-40% smaller memory and disk footprint for the same data. Other recent changes are below.

[Large size screenshot in dark theme](https://gitlab.com/ldutils-projects/zombietrackergps/-/wikis/uploads/6cda0b4d4771e11e052726a1c55b6097/ZTGPS-Full-Dark.jpg)
Version 1.05
Support for waypoints. There is a new Waypoint Pane, and they can be imported from and exported to GPX files. If the waypoint supplies a symbol, ZTGPS will attempt to find a matching waypoint icon from its builtin set. Otherwise, this can be done manually with the "Set Icon..." context menu. See the in-program documentation page for the Waypoint Pane for details.
The "Export All Tracks" option in the export dialog is fixed.
The program crash on exit if a secondary window had UI focus is fixed.
The US National Park Sevice (USNPS) map symbols, and some in similar style, are now available for waypoints, view preset icons, or other purposes.
If autosave on exit fails, the exit is aborted, to allow a chance to manually save to another path.
Numbered backup files are now saved at most once per session, rather than once per save.
Internal track point storage is more memory efficient by 40%, and on-disk track files are about 30% smaller.
Added Cache tag icon for tracks related to geocaching.
Sessions are now locked to prevent accidental conflicts with another running ZTGPS.
Previous .png point icons are replaced by .noscript's, which scale better. Old saves will be autoconverted on load.
Secondary window noscript can now be customized from their tab bar's context menu. This is useful with KDE's task bar.
WinterBike transport category added, with higher rolling resistance than other types of bicycles. There is more per-tire-model variance here, so the exact values can be adjusted for your situation in the Tags tab of the Settings dialog.
Quoted strings in queries now work correctly.
Fixed crash in the KML format importer on some files.
"~" is now a synonym for the regex operator '=~' in queries, "&&" for "&", and "||" for "|".
Application focus is no longer stolen upon program launch.
Added --private-session command line option to disable saves. Useful for temporary sessions along with --conf.
Undoing a UI change (e.g, adding or removing a tab) no longer clears the undo stack, and is available for redo.
The project structure has changed. If you build from source, it's best to use a fresh tree. See updated BUILDING.
Version 1.04
Added live capture support from GPSD. See the new section in the "Importing GPS Data / Live Capture (GPSD)" section of the in-program documentation for details.
Added boundary data for the states of India. Indian states do not have flags per se, but state emblems will be displayed in lieu thereof.
Tracks without elevations attached to points are now visible in Map Panes.

* Support for waypoints.
* The "Export All Tracks" option in the export dialog is fixed.
* The program crash on exit if a secondary window had UI focus is fixed.
* The US National Park Sevice (USNPS) map symbols, and some in similar style, are now available for waypoints, view preset icons, or other purposes.
* If autosave on exit fails, the exit is aborted, to allow a chance to manually save to another path.
* Numbered backup files are now saved at most once per session, rather than once per save.
* Internal track point storage is more memory efficient by 40%, and on-disk track files are about 30% smaller.
* Added Cache tag icon for tracks related to geocaching.
* Sessions are now locked to prevent accidental conflicts with another running ZTGPS.
* Previous .png point icons are replaced by .noscript's, which scale better. Old saves will be autoconverted on load.
* Secondary window noscript can now be customized from their tab bar's context menu. This is useful with KDE's task bar.
* WinterBike transport category added, with higher rolling resistance than other types of bicycles. There is more per-tire-model variance here, so the exact values can be adjusted for your situation in the Tags tab of the Settings dialog.
* Quoted strings in queries now work correctly.
* Fixed crash in the KML format importer on some files.
* "~" is now a synonym for the regex operator '=~' in queries, "&&" for "&", and "||" for "|".
* Application focus is no longer stolen upon program launch.
* Added --private-session command line option to disable saves. Useful for temporary sessions along with --conf.
* Undoing a UI change (e.g, adding or removing a tab) no longer clears the undo stack, and is available for redo.
* The project structure has changed. If you build from source, it's best to use a fresh tree. See updated BUILDING.
*Version 1.04*
* Added live capture support from GPSD. See the new section in the "Importing GPS Data / Live Capture (GPSD)" section of the in-program documentation for details.
* Added boundary data for the states of India. Indian states do not have flags per se, but state emblems will be displayed in lieu thereof.
* Tracks without elevations attached to points are now visible in Map Panes.
* Changing the font size with ctrl+/ctrl- or the program
Version 1.05 of ZombieTrackerGPS (*Winterbike Edition*) has been released, with several new features based on user requests and feedback.
Recent additions include live capture from the Linux [GPS daemon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gpsd), support for GPX waypoint import, export, and management with auto-symbol selection from the US National Park Service map symbol set, localization support, and a more efficient internal point storage for 35-40% smaller memory and disk footprint for the same data. Other recent changes are below.
* [ZombieTrackerGPS web site](https://www.zombietrackergps.net/ztgps/)
* [gitlab source repo](https://gitlab.com/ldutils-projects/zombietrackergps)

menu will now update any secondary windows.
* Added new tags: Snowshoe and Paddleboard.
* The people database (Settings/Configure.../People) now has columns for age and maximum heart rate.
* There are new track columns for min/avg/max heart rate as a % of maximum, if set as above. This information will also be displayed in track tooltips.
* Upon track import, the selected active person will now be applied to the track, so person-specific power, energy, and HR data will be displayed. Previously this required a restart or re-selection of the active person.
* External links in the in-program documentation browser will now open in your desktop's defined external browser. For example, Perl-style regular expressions now link to online Perl documentation.
* Documentation browser improvements: forward and back buttons, and hover-text for external URLs.
* On-disk geopolitical data now uses a custom binary format to remove the Arch build warnings about deprecated Qt APIs. This is also faster to parse.
* There are now translation files for 19 languages in the 'translations' directory of the source tree. These can be used with Qt's "linguist" tool for localizations.
* Added batch tile download dialog, with limited tile count. Please respect server bandwidth.

Happy Linux user
Because I have seen many "Goodbye Linux I am back to Windows" posts, I felt an urge to counteract, and post a positive review.
I have been using Linux since 2016 when I got my last laptop, because I hated Windows 8. I haven't use Windows since then, even at work (back-end developer), after changed employer twice. My current distro is Debian, because I couldn't continue using Linux Mint and sound professional :) Our servers are all Debian so it works perfectly for me. I do need to manually compile/install fresh software sometimes.
I know some people might be wondering whether they would need to log back and forth to Windows: well not for me: all tools I need (VPN, IDEs, remote desktop clients, databases, packages...). Obviously I often I use web clients instead of desktop applications (internal messaging, video call software etc..), so this alleviates the need to manually install anything even further. It also happened to me that some of libraries we used (optical character recognition) were only available under Linux, so my less lucky colleagues had to docker/VMs.
I hear people saying that using Linux implies a learning curve: true, but not only everything I learnt is directly related to my work, but I also enjoy it. ACTUALLY owning my laptop, and being THE admin is the way.
Some people say that Linux is "only for nerds/ developers". This is not true, I actually have a business background (but that time is over).
Being able to use Linux is kinda a privilege, and I am happy to be privileged :)

Security by sandboxing: Firejail vs bubblewrap vs other alternatives
Did you ever do "npm install" or "pip install" and having a slightly bad feeling about executing the resulting code? What if there is malware hiding in one of the packages?
Most programs a user starts run with the full permission of the user. While it's good that this is not root, all the important and irreplaceable files you own are accessible. A backup is nice, but what if a library you downloaded copies your ssh keys or your password manager files?
That's where sandboxing comes into play: Deno does it out-of-the-box, but what if you use something else? Node.js or Python?
So I searched for possibilities: something sufficiently secure, but still convenient enough to be used.
This is a short summary about what I found incl. a short test-example of bubblewrap and firejail.
TL;DR: I use firejail to run untrustworthy code. It's reasonably secure, simple to use and allows me to easily limit what programs can access (files and network mainly). bubblewrap works too, but it's less convenient for my taste.
